Video Resurrection

The Rochester/Finger Lakes Film and Video Office is looking for locally produced short videos and animations for a new "video wall" installation at the Rochester Airport. Lucky I opened the email before I hit the delete button. They are casting a broad net for "whatever you have… the sky's the limit!" — my kind of call to action.

I think I have four videos (plus an alternate version) that would fit the bill. They would accept Quicktime movies, but damn if I didn't have a brain cramp around...

Detoxing and recalibrating

My social week of snacking and beer-drinking exacted its toll (on top of a few tolls that had already accumulated). So, this week: no alcohol. Water with a slice of lemon (refreshing, refreshing, keep repeating…).

I've gotten into a bad habit of tarting up my healthy afternoon popcorn with melted margarine. So, back to scorching it in the microwave for a little for flavor. And that yummy bowl of chocolate-chip cookie-dough frozen yogurt I've grown to savor in the evening? It's berry season in ...

Sleepyhead Marketing (oh, yeah, that novel I wrote)

Last summer I was all about marketing my book, gearing up for cold calls to libraries and yakkety-yak to book clubs. Then we went on vacation in September and I came back totally focused on new writing. So here we are a year later. Yesterday we visited a shop specializing in Chinese antiques and it reminded me that I have a bunch of books I ordered to give as promos to people in the art and antiquities business. So I slapped "art dealers on the run" on the "one-sheet" flyer I never used and g...

Back To Ebay

Nothing like that cha-ching sound to get me motivated. I've been lollygagging on getting new auctions going, but last weekend's auctions (ending this weekend) yielded $130+ on a little tintype album, $230+ on a little Amsterdam (Netherlands) album, and $300+ on another little tintype/carte-de-visite album (with 3 Civil War soldiers — always desirable).

I've been doing little videos on these "three-dimensional" collectibles — that helps (even though the fun — for me — has worn off). Above is...

Do you Bing, Buzz, Twitter?

Do you waste as much time as I do worrying about wasting time? Or, like me, to you embrace wasting time by calling it "networking" or "infrastructure building" or "exploration"? Nevermind.

Does anyone use Buzz? If you live in gmail like I do, it's that colorful icon just under the Inbox. It's linked to your Google Profile (got one of those? highly recommended if you don't have your own blog/webpage & desire a public portal where people can find you. Mine.) and aggregates all your Twitter...

Enough with the immigrant hatred

I wish people would stop sending my mother hate-filled email "forwards" about immigrants to the U.S. What kills me is that most of these tracts come from her Irish acquaintances who apparently have no appreciation for what our own people went through as newcomers to America.

Laboring immigrants come to America because they are poor and because there is work. It's human nature. Sick of living in a hovel? Sick of watching your children die of avoidable disease? Pick up and go. Do what ya gotta d...

Pat Drum Aerobics Reunion

Remember the Eighties? Disco was dead but the beat rolled on as women gathered in recreation centers, health clubs, church basements, and school multi-purpose rooms to shake their booties. Leg warmers optional.

I was there. Part of the movement. Working on the Board of Pat Drum Aerobics, Inc. and translating exercise choreography into stick figures (see above).

Last night I attended a reunion of the the PDA instructors (+ me), the fourth in about twenty years. We are creeping (and creaking...

"Organization" as Procrastination

Here I am again. "Organizing." Staring at a box of 19th-century stuff. The "stuff" is staring back — waiting to be listed on ebay and sent to the inventory-waiting-for-a-home shelves downstairs. They are really all ready to go — photos and videos uploaded — but I'm not quite ready for that all-out focus it takes to write selling descriptions and connect all the dots between description… posting… spreadsheet… yadda-yadda.

One way of getting things done is to focus strictly on the task in front ...
