Introverts and Heartbreak

I was recently asked to contribute to a Huff Po piece on 7 Ways Introverts Handle Heartbreak Differently by Brittany Wong. I found this article to be very helpful.

The other contributors prompted me to think about my own divorce process and how my introverted tendencies (back then still not fully realized) affected the way I...

Finding Your True Self in Nature

We often speak about going off into nature as if we are somehow separate from it. But aren't we, by necessity, part of nature? Contemporary human has lost touch with its place in the natural world. If we are separate, then the rest of the world is just material resources to be exploited.
David Hinton in Hunger Mountain reminds us of a time when...

108 Metaphors for Mindfulness Redux

I am also pleased to announce that my first book--Wild Chickens and Petty Tyrants: 108 Metaphors for Mindfulness is being re-released under the title 108 Metaphors for Mindfulness: from Wild Chickens to Petty Tyrants. It has the same metaphors that many people have grown to love and trust in their daily mindfulness practice in a new book design (astute...

Finding our True Selves in the Vastness of Nature

What is the self beyond language concept, and story? Can we find an identity in the unfolding awareness of the moment?

When we let go of stories and release ourselves into the flow of the moment, we start the realize the world that we live within is much bigger than we realized. It’s not only big—it’s vast.

The ocean reminds us of that; the sky reminds us...

Check the Balance of Your Equanimity Equity

At a recent workshop at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, I coined a new phrase: equanimity equity (EE). EE is the rationale for practice. The more we practice, the more equanimity we have in the bank. When difficulty hits, we can draw on that balance to handle the situation without being overtaken by reactivity.

A lack of reactivity, after all, is the aim of mindfulness practices. Such reactivity colors every aspect of our being and that "noise" keeps us from experiencing...

Handling Rejection

I was recently interviewed by Brianna Steinhilber of EverUp for a piece on dealing with rejection. You can read her very thoughtful story here

http://www.everup.com/2016/02/05/rejections-hacks-brain-effects/

Here are some additional thoughts I had in addition to those quoted in her article:
Why does it seem that some people are less affected than others by being rejected?

Becoming upset in reaction...

Accessibility and the Precious

I had an interesting dream image last night. I was observing a fantastic display of the aurora borealis--Northern lights (or it might have been the aurora australis if I had been in the southern hemisphere). I wanted to capture some video of this event so I went to get my phone. When I returned outside various fireworks displays had started and I could no longer see the lights.

There are some rich metaphors from this dream sequence. Think of the difference between a natural phenomenon...

2016 Well Underway: Resolutions, Intentions, and Projects

We are well into 2016 and I've been taking something of a hiatus from social media and this blog. I've been reflecting a lot on my life and resolutions, intentions, and projects for 2016 and beyond.

I'm not a big fan of resolutions. Like wedding vows, New Year's resolutions just make people into liars. The intentions are in the right place but follow-through is usually...
