I write books; years post-brain injury, I read books with *longer-than-a-minute memory and comprehension* again. I write non-fiction pieces; I read the news, which is supposedly non-fiction. I write poetry occasionally; I've gotten out of the habit of reading poetry -- must fix. I wrote short stories in another life.

I write blog posts; I read opinion pieces. I photograph things that catch my eye; I enjoy my Flickr Friends' photographs.

I tweet; I read tweets, well, okay, I read tweets addictively. I post Facebook status updates through third-party apps when I must.

I use Goodreads to track my reading progress as I relearn to read with comprehension and solid recall; I wrestle with the Goodreads website to write reviews again -- when I'm on th

I needed an outlet beyond Twitter to express what it’s like physically, cognitively, emotionally. And I needed to have fun with it. Louise showed up. So innocent, so eager to be working for the transit system (TTC). This was perfect. I could write a satire for the first time and have fun skewering the TTC through Louise’s innocent eyes. I even created a Twitter account for her to up the fun factor. (less)

Sediment in Toronto Water Means a New Heat Pump

Pink, Yellow. Blue vertical bands with image of heat pump in a snow well divided into thirds.

A new heat pump. That was not on my Christmas list, let me tell ya! But as of Thursday, 22 January, 2026, I have a new cold-climate-3-ton one heating my home. It’s been a trek! From December 10th to January 22nd, I experienced horror, relief, confusion, upset, frustration, despair, growing insanity, learned helplessness, adaptation to the insurance mode of living (wait in between a flurry of repai

Shireen’s Recent Updates

Shireen is 92% done with A Witch's Guide to Magical Innkeeping: A fun light read without the usual ending. But somehow both realistic and uplifting.

Shireen is 90% done with Mrs. Pollifax and the Hong Kong Buddha: I’m reading these novels quicker than I normally read light mysteries. Either my brain is improving or because I’d read these before my brain injury, that familiarity eases reading effort and lets me read quicker. Either way, the kind of escapism I need right now.
