Do Movies Influence Novels?

French-Connection

I love movies. I have always enjoyed all genres of movies – especially mysteries, suspense and thrillers. Oh, and cop thrillers of course. I’ve often wondered if my movie enthusiasm has helped to shape my writing style and subject matter I choose to incorporate into a novel.

It’s true that many movies are adapted from books. But what about movies generating (or inspiring) characters and storylines for novels? Writers have written stories inspired from newspaper headlines. It’s just the idea...

Gruesome Mysteries: Forensics Cracks the Case

blogpost Photo courtesy of fineartamerica.com

For many of us, the area in which we live is filled with relative peace and tranquility. But, sometimes, a gruesome and brutal crime will occur in our community. And then suddenly, that harmony is turned upside down.

Fortunately, modern forensic science has enabled law enforcement to uncover the mysteries surrounding these horrific crimes. And, in turn, this has led to the extensive hunt and swift arrest of the inhumane monsters who commit these vicious at...

OCTOBER SCARE: 31 Things that Scare Me

friday13th-picIt’s the scariest month of the year and I thought I’d keep up with the yearly tradition and post what actually scares a criminologist and crime fiction author. Most scary things stay the same, but sometimes I add new ones and get over old ones.

Now, on to my list. Just in case you were wondering…

People text messaging and surfing the Internet when they drive. Cleaning the cat litter box. Men who wear socks with sandals. People referred to with three first names. Children that know more about...

Disturbing Movies that Use Psychology to Create Fear

ShowerAs the weather begins to turn cooler and the official start of autumn has begun, maybe you are thinking about curling up on the couch with a scary movie as darkness falls. For me, the most frightening movies are not usually the ones in which there is a lot of blood and gore. Instead, the films that stay with me the longest and sometimes keep me up at night are the psychological thrillers – the ones with characters whose twisted affect or lack of basic humanity can make a horror movie captivat...

Serial Killers: Not Just an American Problem

Not just in America – but across the world – people have been plagued throughout recent history by the wicked actions of serial killers. Unnervingly, these living monsters – and their menacing eyes, disturbing thoughts and horrific acts – prey upon the innocent across the globe.

Although often glorified in the media, make no mistake about it – serial killers are of one society’s darkest creations. Here are three of arguably the most depraved seri...

American Violence: An Endless Epidemic

Deep within the streets of the urban American landscape, there exists a harsh reality – it is more perilous to be caught without your gun than to be caught with your gun. Simply put, the streets instill more fear than law enforcement ever will.

A Violent Upswing

The violence that plagues America’s inner cities has seen a spike after many years of relatively low homicidal violence rates. In 2015, the murder rates have increased by 33% or more in large cities, such...

A Vigilante Detective Who Covertly Hunts Down Killers #Review #DarkPursuit

DarkPursuit 2ndPlace_EastTexasWritersGuildBookAwards2015 FIVE-STARShonorable

An Addictive Read!

Dark Pursuit is a very well written psychological crime thriller that will certainly suck the reader into this particular story right from the very start. This is the fifth book in the author’s ‘Emily Stone’ series, but it can be read alone without having to have read any of the previous titles in the series. This book has been very aptly entitled ‘Dark Pursuit’ and it is quite a dark story that involves both child kidnapping and the murder of children, but the...
