ReVisiting Tom
When someone allows me to tell part of their story in a book, I walk a fine line between their story and their privacy. As such I only post the following photos with permission, and because so many of you ask. Yep, the Tom of Visiting Tom is still telling his tales. Told a few at his 93rd birthday party this week. Arlene is gone now, and Tom’s eyesight has failed to the point where he can’t work in the shop like he used to, but he’s got the support of good family and good neighbors nearby (including one in particular, for whom we are most grateful), and he recently got set up with a scanner that allows him to read again.
Life roars on. I don’t see Tom as much as I used to. I’ve written so many books and columns and essays at this point I’m often caught off guard when readers ask me about certain passages and I can come up with nothing but a blank stare. But how I treasure the time I’ve been allowed in Tom and Arlene’s kitchen, what they did for my little family years before I even knew them, and the blessed opportunity of doing my best to convey just a slice of the life they lived together. Happy birthday, neighbor.

Michael Perry and the Long Beds with Greg Gilbertson
The Long Beds will be heading north on Friday August 5th to the Potter’s Shed in Shell Lake, WI, to play some thumpers, some soft ones, a few fresh ones, and deliver some hilarity and tall tales in between. Plus Mike will be signing his new book, Hunker. The Potter’s Shed is a one-of-a-kind venue–we’ve always had a blast up there. Chippewa Valley singer-songwriter and guitar virtuoso Greg Gilbertson will be opening the show. If you’ve never seen Greg sing and play, you’re in for a treat. He’ll sing you a gentle ballad, then turn around and work that guitar like an acoustic wizard.
Shows starts at 6PM
Tickets are $20 – Children under 14 admitted free.

Crazed Cardinal
For those of you following along the cardinal has now gone full Hitchcock. Attacking multiple windows, including our vehicles. And apparently eating lotsa berries. Feeling differently about him now than I was when I wrote about him in Hunker:
The cardinal appeared in the winter-stripped bush outside our window this morning with all the subtlety of a Christmas ornament left hanging after the needles drop. Those scarlet feathers are an invigorating sight any time of the year but perhaps especially in this the season of who-knows-what-season featuring a landscape of bleak browns and deteriorating whites. I was happy to see him.
A cardinal is magical realism on the wing. You know beneath those feathers it’s just another bird, and a fairly common one at that, but you also can’t quite believe your luck when all that crimson flares up right outside your window. It opens you to the possibility of conjury. As he flew away I dubbed him a talisman of spring even though I know full well he’s non-migratory.
