Slippin’ On Down the Line

Twenty years ago, after “Population 485” came out, a reader appliquéd cows on these slippers and mailed them to me. They have been in my writing room ever since. Today, after deep consideration, heartfelt review, much double-clutching, and a decade’s worth of duct tape, I have made the call. Farewell good and faithful pair.

Took a flyer down to La Crosse, Wisconsin, last week and was running through the rain to meet my daughter for a quick coffee when I stopped dead at the sight of Forty Acres Deep in this display window. You know this sort of thing never gets old, right?

Sturgill Simpson and Forty Acres Deep

I’m no Sturgill Simpson. I’ve not gone to his extremes. Any parallels I might draw between myself and him are limited and anemic. But they exist, and if not for this interview and this album, I’d have never shoved everything aside to write Forty Acres Deep. And man, the ways that little book is hitting, it was the right wrong turn.
