Good Eats: Ruby’s, NYC
Ruby’s 219 Mulberry St., (212) 925-5755. Daily 9am-10pm. There is no better place to be for lunch on a warm summer day in SoHo. That’s when this tiny Aussie-run spot opens up their entire wall to the elements, allowing happy sounds to fill the air, and it gets so overstuffed that there is always a wait. I lucked onto the best item on the menu with a simple B.L.A.T., made extraordinary with a delicious meaty bacon. My dining partners were also happy with their choices--a kale salad enhanced with pumpkin and sunflower seeds plus dried cranberries--and a portobello mushroom burger (it was more like a panini). We couldn’t resist sides of the spectacular, super-flavorful Brussels sprouts and colorful, crunchy corncakes, but that was a lot of food for three people so we lugged away the leftovers to give to a street person, but wouldn’t you know that on this beautiful day in the neighborhood we didn’t find one? So we finished them off at home.

Good Eats: Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden, NYC--Queens--Astoria
Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden 29-19 24th Ave./31st St., Astoria, (718) 274-4925. 17 M-F from 5pm, Sat-Sun from noon. No reservations. No pets. New York’s oldest and biggest beer garden, this wildly popular spot has been in business more than 100 years. When it originally opened in 1910, it was a place for Czech and Slovak immigrants to socialize.

It took me a long time to finally get here, and I was delighted that it fills my beer garden fantasies. With more than 100 picnic tables and plenty of sun-sheltering umbrellas, it can serve up to 1,600 people at a time.

Through the years the menu has changed. Currently it offers the traditional--bratwurst, schnitzels, fried Muenster cheese--as well as the trendy--a veggie burger, vegan and gluten-free gazpacho, vegetarian crostini. I personally favor the big pretzel, potato pancakes, and pierogis. As you might expect, the beer selection is vast, but you can’t go wrong with Pilsner Urquell.

Live music is scheduled regularly, and a raised dance floor encourages getting down.

The adjacent Bohemian Hall offers interior space for use in inclement weather, but in good weather it is empty.

Things to Do: Nanxi River Area, Zhejiang Province, Wenzhou, China
NANXI RIVER AREA
This day trip in Zhejiang Province is not far from Wenzhou.
Yandang Mountain National Geological Park/Mt. Yandangshan Global Geo Park The Yandang Mountains coastal range dominates the eastern part of Wenzhou. Known for its natural beauty, the area features many vertical rock faces and pinnacles, mountain slopes with lush forests and bamboo groves, streams with clear water, waterfalls, and caves. Also known as “Wild Goose Pond Mountain,” Yandang Mountain is a UNESCO World Geological Park. It offers a rare combination of both scientific and aesthetic value and is ranked among the top 10 mountains in China, Yangdang was formed 12 million years ago and is one of the most complete Cretaceous rhyolitic ancient volcanic caldera. It is called “the natural museum of volcano.” Visit the beautiful Dalongqiu (“Big Dragon”) Waterfall and the Lingfeng scenic area, which is famous for its steep peaks and various shaped rocks. In the Lingyan scenic area, you can see the “Flying Man” glide and perform acrobatics from one mountain peak to another using a harness. The area also has many temples and shrines that are built inside caves or in the mouths of caves. Visitors climb up 407 steps to reach the 9-level Guanyin Temple, a Buddhist temple built in 265 inside a hillside cave between two rock peaks leaning against each other. The temple follows the natural rock structure, and a shrine is in the highest, most hidden part of the cave.
Shizhiyan Cliff Scenic Spot With jagged Shiwei Rock/Shizhi Hill as the dramatic backdrop, this area of the park offers a relatively easy two-hour hike through varied terrain that includes bamboo forests and a rushing river. Several stepping-stone bridges add some challenge. Half-way through, a short boat ride on a still, scenic section of the river is an option to cut down on climbing. After the ride, benches and some simple snacks are available at a resting spot.”

LINGSHANG Renjia village Fronted by a river, and built into the hills behind, this small 400-year-old Chinese mountain village is home to 47 families. Because of its very fresh air, it is nicknamed “Natural Oxygen Bar.” It is a full-on tourist destination, with restaurants, tea houses, and hotels operating within many of the old buildings, most of which have been renovated.

Restaurants serve local specialties, including roasted baby goat, which is brought to the table whole and which diners don plastic gloves to eat.

CANGPO Ancient Village In Yantou Town, Yongjia County. 15yuen. Situated on the Nanxi River, this ancient village dates to the 1100s and features traditional Chinese architecture. The village’s walls, houses, paths, pavilions, temples, and pools retain their ancient style, and the village maintains its original layout. Cangpo is a single-surname village, settled and developed by a population of which all claim the surname Li. A garden with flowers, two lotus ponds, and ancient cypress trees remain, and a Chess Museum can be visited inside an ancient house. An ancient wedding ceremony performance is included with admission, and a farmhouse dinner is an option. Kunqu Opera of Yongjia County is a living fossil. Southern China’s local classical opera is today performed professionally in only seven mainland Chinese cities, including Hangzhou (Zhejiang Province Kunqu Theatre).

Lishui Ancient Street With a 400-year-history, this ancient curved commercial street stretches along a canal and is lined on one side with shops. There is plenty of opportunity to mingle with locals here.

Nanxi River bamboo rafting Yongjia Town, Yongjia County. The Nanxi River is a branch of the Ou River--the largest river in the Wenzhou area--and is famous for its 36 bends and 72 beaches. More than 200 ancient villages dot the river, which also boasts beautiful mountain scenery and river banks lined with beech forests. A quiet ride on the clear water of the Nanxi River aboard a bamboo raft is a must. Sometimes cormorant fishing is demonstrated. The Nanxi River and its Kun Qu (a type of local music) are a UNESCO Non-material Heritage of the world.

Sites to See:Dongyuan Printing Village; Ruian City, Wenzhou, China
Dongyuan Printing Village South, Pingyangkeng Township, RUIAN CITY. Located near Jiuzhu Lake, a beautiful part of the Zhai Liao River scenic area, this picturesque region features nine small lakes surrounded by green hills. The traditional technique and art of movable wood-type printing, or typesetting, originated in China via Mongolia about 800 years ago and is considered one of the four great inventions of the ancient Chinese people. It continues to be practiced here as it was in ancient China. Surrounding a courtyard, two renovated wood farm houses with stone and black-brick walls exhibit printing artifacts. Fascinating live demonstrations show how letters are carved from tiny blocks, how the type is set, and how the printing is done. The village was designated a UNESCO “Intangible Cultural Heritage” site in 2010. This is also a noodle village, where in another area curtains of thin noodles are dried outside on poles. When our group visited, the whole village turned out to watch the spectacle and interact. It was delightful.

Sites to See: Wenzhou Opal--Ou Ceramic, Opal Furniture Co., Ltd., Opal Canteen; Wenzhou, China
Wenzhou Opal--Ou Ceramic, Opal Furniture Co., Ltd., Opal Canteen No.1 Yucangdong Road,Economic Development Zone, +86-577-86551234. Restaurant reservations required.

This converted small factory now houses a restaurant, wine tasting room, and ceramics showroom on the first floor; a showroom of furniture made from recycled components on the second floor; and a small museum on the top floor, where the owner also resides. Items feature a spare, Scandinavian aesthetic.

The restaurant continues the minimalist Japanese-style with small servings in big ceramic celadon bowls that are stacked for a “ripple effect.” The first bowl is very large, then the next bowl is nested inside it, until the final small bowl is inserted. On my visit, a casual effect was achieved with the spreading of mandarin oranges and black King Kong peanuts across the table.

And don’t miss the dramatic restrooms, where the men’s room urinal is washed and rinsed continuously by water recycled from the process of washing hands.

Sites to See: Jiangxin Islet; Wenzhou, China
Jiangxin Islet No. 199, Jiangdong Road, Lucheng District, +86 577 88201281. Daily 8am-10pm. 25yuen; children 12yuen. Situated in the middle of the Ou River, just a short ferry ride away from city center, this is one of the four most famous historic islets in China. The island is nicknamed “fairyland of immortals” and offers respite from the city in a peaceful park environment. Visitors can stroll leisurely along paths with flowers and ponds on both sides. Two seven-story-tall pagodas with six sides are positioned on either side of the Jiangxin Temple built in the Qing Dynasty (1789). The East Pagoda was built during the Tang Dynasty (AD869), while the West Pagoda was constructed during the North Song Dynasty (AD 969). The former British embassy built in 1890 is also here, as well as a small Revolution Museum.

Things to Do: Five Horses Pedestrian Shopping Area/Wuma Street; Wenzhou, China
Five Horses Pedestrian Shopping Area/Wuma Street This wide strolling boulevard is lined with shops and restaurants. It is one of the oldest shopping streets, and is the most popular pedestrian-only shopping area, in Wenzhou. Shopping for shoes and jewelry is prime here. Surrounding shopping areas include Shamaohe Ladies’ Street, Kaitai Department Store, Fuqian Street, Gongyuan Street, First Bridge, and Liefang Road Shopping Center. A Starbucks offers second-story window seating overlooking the busy shopping area. While I visited, both children and teenagers got excited when they learned we were Americans and, treating us like rock stars, wanted their pictures taken with us. Quite the experience.

Sights to See: Wenzhou, China
The word “wen” in Chinese means “warm.” Perhaps Wenzhou got its name because of its year-round mild weather. It is not cold in winter and not hot in summer, and in fall it can be foggy and humid, seemingly always covered in a mist. Centered around the Ou River--known as the Mother River of Wenzhou--it is positioned for fresh air and sea breezes. Situated in Zhejiang Province in a cradle of mountains and water, on the coast between the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta, the city faces the East China Sea. It is south of Shanghai--1 hour by plane, 3 to 4 hours by high-speed train.

With a population of more than 6 million (143 people are over the age of 100, with the oldest being 106), Wenzhou is a modern city with many luxury hotels, good restaurants and bars, and varied shopping. Construction and redevelopments seems to be going on everywhere.

Wenzhou has a rich history that dates back more than 2,200 years, yet it feels young with vitality. Renowned for its handicraft industry, it is one of China’s oldest artisan cities and especially known for its ceramics, but it also produces paper, silk textiles, and embroidery. The area attracts many famous poets, writers and dignitaries, and mathematicians.

For centuries, Wenzhou's location on the coast had many inhabitants relying on shipping, trading, and fishing for their livelihoods. Now, shoes and electrical appliances produced here are sold both at home and abroad, and at one point Wenzhou manufactured 90% of the world’s eye-glass frames.
The friendly citizens of Wenzhou are progressive and open to western ideas. Millions of merchants have emigrated and started businesses throughout the world. Most Chinese expats living in the U.S. come from here.
So now, for a while, I will be posting about the many things to see and do in the spectacular area.

Sights to See: coastal loop drive + Roxborough, Tobago
COASTAL LOOP DRIVE
Lush Tobago is encircled by one rollercoaster-like loop road that takes at least an entire day to do properly.
Highlights along this route include:
●silk cotton tree On Northside Rd., in Runnymeade Area. This gigantic tree is 350-plus years old. Silky cotton is made from the pods.

●CASTARA This fishing village on the Caribbean side has a surprising number of distinctive guesthouses snuggled into the steep-walled bay.

●Parlatuvier Bay This fishing village with a pier and boats has a tranquil beach.

●Bloody Bay This secluded, breezy beach provides great swimming.
●Sunshine Restaurant I enjoyed lunch here on a comfortable verandah overlooking dense forest. Firm king fish, which is like halibut, or lobster curry are both good choices.

●Speyside On the loop’s furthest tip, this area offers great diving and has boat trips to offshore islands.
More info on this loop drive.
●ROXBOROUGH
Roxborough is the former capital of Tobago.
● Tobago Cocoa Estate By reservation. Learn about cocoa-making in this heritage park. Though it is the last cocoa estate in operation on the island, it has been open only since 2005. Driving in, you’ll pass through a teak tree alee. Take a walk through the estate and see a variety of fruiting trees as well as plenty of cocoa trees. Eco-friendly cultivation practices and no pesticides are used here--crows eat the cocoa pods, so hawks are used to stop them. A rum and chocolate tasting is included. Mature “immortal trees” shade cocoa trees.

●Argyle Waterfall TT10; TT30 includes tour guide. Nearby, this multi-level falls is reached by a short hike through quiet, sheltered forest filled with cacao trees, assorted flowering plants, and many kinds of birds. Hiking boots makes sense, or other sensible footwear--forget the flip flops--because there are rocks, steps, and uneven surfaces. The falls cascade down over two smaller pools and form a deep pool at the bottom. A clear shallow pool higher up is also ideal for swimming but requires using a climbing rope to reach (although I hear the upper pools are home to tiny pinching shrimps), and on the third level, you can bathe under showers from the falls.
