Headed to the Library
Tomorrow (Friday, May 3), I’ll be at the Maryland-Delaware Joint Library Conference with Penguin Random House Audio to give librarians a behind-the-scenes peek into the audiobook studio. I love talking with librarians. Not only are they the best evangelists for wonderful stories, my parents raised me to recognize public libraries as one of the cornerstones of democracy, along with public education, voting access, and labor unions. So I’m always very honored to have an opportunity to support t...

Earphones Award for The Peacock Feast
I was delighted to receive another Earphones Awardfrom AudioFile Magazine for my recent performance of THE PEACOCK FEAST, by Lisa Gornick (Macmillan Audio). The lovely review noted,
“Gilbert…does a remarkable job depicting every character, male and female, young and old, with believable accents when warranted.”
The project was a bit of a rush — I had to record a nearly 13-hour book in just a little over two days — so I’m extra thrilled the narration swept the listener away. Performing wri...
Celebrating Women’s History
“Audiobook narration is…meaningful…We’re offering work to the world that the world needs. Stories save lives, and work…that is political and socially invested is a huge opportunity for me as an artist to create a legacy of my o wn.”
March was Women’s History Month, and I was so pleased to be invited to a special interview with master narrator Suzanne Toren and Jo Reed of AudioFile Magazine. Listen to the 30-minute interview here.
It was an honor to be invited to discuss not only the process of...

Future Projects and Recent Celebrations
It’s been too long since my last update here, and I’ve missed this blog! So, why the long silence? Because I’ve been busier than ever! Lots to share. Here are the highlights:
For the last two years, I’ve been developing aproject in collaboration with the BBC: a multi-generational, multi-racial contemporary docu-drama podcast in a rural setting, which will be overseen by the former head of BBC Audio Drama and current Radio 4 Commissioning Editor, Alison Hindell. WME represents me on this...
The 2019 Audie Awards
The Audies were held on March 4, 2019, and for the tenth time in my career, I was nominated for an award by the Audio Publishers Association. This year’s nomination was for Best Fantasy for SECOND HAND CURSES, which I perfomed with Marc Vietor and Scott Aiello for Audible Studios. AudioFile Magazine gave the title an Earphones Award (my 20th!), noting in their review, “Each of the many secondary characters is easily identifiable, with Gilbert earning special praise for crafting so many dis...

Talking Audiobooks with Anderson’s Bookshop
A few weeks ago I recorded a conversation with the lovely Mary O’Malley of the famed Anderson’s Bookshop in Illinois. Anderson’s history dates from 1875, and six generations of family have kept the bookstore a vibrant presence regionally and nationally, so it was truly an honor to be invited to contribute to their Three Questions With Mary series; any business that has such a deep commitment to books and to its community has a huge fan in me!
And lucky for me, Mary is good friends with Julia...

Two heroes
This month, one of my personal heroes, Paul Meier, invited me to have a conversation about audiobooks for his new podcast, In a Manner of Speaking. You’ll recognize Paul as the gentleman and scholar-founder of the International Dialects of English Archive (used by every self-respecting audiobook narrator and actor…on the planet). Not only was that an honor, but he invited the magnificent Julia Whelan to the interview, which made the interview even more of a pleasure, because Julia is also one...
