Vampires: On Their Way Out?

Vampires: On Their Way Out?

I can't tell you how many times I've heard that vampires are on their way out. Steampunk is all the rage. Zombies are the new vampires. No slight intended to either of those sub-genres of romance and erotica, but it's going to take a whole lot more than a few popular books to dethrone vampires from their spot atop the paranormal world.

It's easy to see why vampires aren't going anywhere any time soon. They're so much like us, and then they're everything we want to be. You won't find a more human paranormal creature than vampires. True, zombies used to be human too, but for heaven's sake, look what's happened to them after they stopped being human. Poor things are losing body parts. Life after humanity is a whole lot better for vamps. Can you think of more than a handful of vampires who don't look incredible? You may find more in straight horror, but in romance, those paranormal men and women have what's become the American dream--eternal youth. No wonder they're so popular.

Vampires also possess what no other paranormal creature can lay claim to. A sensuality that is unrivaled. Sure, weres and shifters have a definite animal magnetism. That can't be denied. But it doesn't outdo the vampire in sensuality. It's something in the way a vampire claims another through the use of his or her mouth. The mouth is one of the sexiest body parts that doesn't have to be covered by clothing. It involves all the senses--the sight of a full pair of lips, the taste of the tongue on yours, the feel of another's mouth on your skin, the sound of someone's tongue melding with yours, the smell of fresh breath (or whatever kind turns you on) as someone comes in to kiss your lips. And all this is the focus of the vampire.

Combine the sensuality of vampires with the danger inherent in a creature that can kill with the very part of his or her body that brings such pleasure, and you have a paranormal superstar. Undoubtedly, there is a place at the paranormal table for all kinds of creatures, but the head of the table won't be vacated by vampires any time soon. As an author of erotic paranormal romance, I'm thrilled by the idea of vampires sticking around. They're so delicious to write! My current release, Blood Avenged, is an excellent example of the sensuality of the vampire. Vasilije, the main character in the book, is nothing less than a hedonist.

Here's a taste of him in all his glory: (warning R rated + adult content ahead)

Vasilije didn't bother to turn the lights on once inside. In truth, as a vampire, he saw as well in the dark as humans did in the light. Even more, there was no point in acting like they were going to sit on the couch and talk or watch television.

He knew what she wanted and he wanted it too.

Closing the door behind him, he reached out to her and pulled her to him, enjoying the feel of her body pressed to his. She was so warm. So willing.

Her hands slid over his stomach and chest as she arched up to kiss him. Bending down, his lips grazed hers for a moment before he pulled her closer, wanting what she offered.

Warm and wet, her mouth eagerly pressed against his and her tongue met his, teasing him with the tip. His fangs had slid into his mouth at the first touch of her hands on his body, and each playful flick of her tongue came so close, just missing them. To feel her tongue against his fangs would be heaven.

His hand tightened its grip in her hair and tugged, making her moan into his mouth. God, he wanted to hear that sound again. The sound of a woman needy for everything he could give her.

Sasa slid her hands over his shoulders and pulled him to her, pressing her breasts against his body as she devoured his mouth. Her tightened nipples rubbed against him, exciting him. Instinctively, he slid his hand under her thin t-shirt and plucked at one hardened pearl through her lacy bra, squeezing it gently between his thumb and forefinger as he cupped the fullness surrounding it.

Again, she moaned, making that sound that hit him directly between his legs. Already rock hard, his cock strained against the front of his pants. Whatever his mind may have thought about sleeping with her, his body had different plans.

And then her tongue flicked over the tip of one fang and sensations raced from his balls, up his cock, and through his body.

"Fuck," he groaned as she seductively slid her tongue over his fang again. She had to know what she was doing to him. She had been a vampire's girlfriend.

The idea that he was about to fuck the girlfriend of his dead vampire momentarily made Vasilije pull back from her, but the touch of her hands on his stomach made him forget every guilty feeling he had. Looking down, he watched her fumble with the shirt buttons.

"Sasa."

At the sound of her name, she looked up and even in the darkness he saw the look of desire on her face. In one swift movement, he pinned her hands above her head. Pushing her up against the wall, he leaned into her and pressed his thigh between her legs, feeling the heat coming from her. Slowly, a low growl slid from his throat.

Sasa pushed against his hands, but he wouldn't release her. Grinding against his thigh, she arched her body toward his.

His free hand lifted her shirt over her head and in seconds she stood before him in only her bra. A quick flick with his fingers and it was sailing to the floor to join her shirt.

Vasilije cupped one supple breast in his hand and tenderly stroked her silky soft flesh with his fingertips. Eager to feel her on his tongue, he bent his head and captured a nipple, quickly sucking it to an excited peak. A moan drew his attention from her tightened pink nipple, and he looked up to see Sasa's face. Brown eyes clouded over with need stared into his.

"Please let me touch you. I want to feel you."

Silently, he released her hands and returned to what his mouth craved. She felt so good in his mouth. Each pull made her grind her pussy against his thigh. Her hands raked through his hair, stroking and tugging as he sensually nibbled on her.

Vasilije couldn't remember when he'd been with a woman who was so responsive. Every spot his mouth and hands visited aroused her, and she seemed to worship his body as she moved her hands from his hair to caress his neck and shoulders through his shirt.

Softly, he grazed her nipple with his fangs and from above he heard her cry out. He stood up and smiled with satisfaction, his sharp fangs aching to sink into her. He was surprised to find not fear in her face but desire—pure desire. Her cry hadn't been of pain but pleasure.

Was she just drunk or did she realize what he planned to do?

As he studied her in the darkness, she pulled him to her and kissed him with a need that sent a jolt to his cock. His hands made their way to her jeans, and he made quick work of the button and zipper. Only cotton panties stood between him and his goal.

Vasilije slid two fingers under those panties and down through her bare slickness. Sasa wriggled against his hand as her mouth fed on his, her tongue darting in and around the inside passionately.

Bending down to pull her pants off, he whispered in her ear, "Careful, love. Teagan may have been able to control himself when you toyed with his fangs, but I won't."

Sasa stood in front of him naked and looking up at him as she licked her lips. Lifting herself onto her toes, she whispered next to his mouth, "You mean like this?" and then slowly ran her tongue over the point of his left fang.

His head thrown back, one thought controlled him now.

So why do you love vampires so much? Let me know. I'd love to hear your ideas.

Thanks, Roxanne, for letting me hang out at your fangtastic blog today! It's been a pleasure.

Would You Be Interested in Flint Fang Fest 2012?

This year the Flint Horror Convention is in its second year and will be held on October 20. The Flint Vampire Ball is in its fifth year and will be held on October 27.

The vast popularity of vampires and werewolves is evident everywhere: in books, in TV shows like The Vampire Diaries and True Blood, and in movies (the most popular being the Twilight Saga- in which Breaking Dawn Part 2 opens in theaters November 16, 2012).

Why not take the opportunity to launch the Flint Fang Fest? We could kick off Fang Fest at the Horror Convention and end it with the Vampire Ball. It could be a weeklong event throughout Flint and surrounding areas.

Think about it- supernatural theme events will already be in full swing for Halloween, why not add to this with Paranormal themed events local businesses can take part in-put Flint on the map for something that has the potential to draw crowds from other areas of Michigan, perhaps even other states.

I'm thinking art galleries could host scary art shows with vampire, werewolf and other paranormal themes.

Local performers and venues could host Vampire Burlesque shows, or perhaps a Paranormal Fashion show (think 1940s pin up girls with fangs, Victorian finery vampire style, Werewolf Biker Chic).

I would love to get local book stores and libraries involved by hosting multiple author book signing events.

We can even help the community by involving charity organizations- set up a blood drive with the Red Cross (donate blood, vampires will thank you), have local pet adoptions set up with the theme "Love Fangs? Adopt a Pet".

Other possibilities include collecting Toys for Tots or canned goods for the local food bank, perhaps offering a discount on tickets when a toy or can of food is donated.

With Flint being "Vehicle City" perhaps we could even set up a scary car show. Anyone that has a tricked out hearse, sleek sexy car (or truck) with scary paint jobs, or anyone who just a vehicle a vampire would definitely be caught dead in could show off their wheels.

If you would be interested in taking part in this unique opportunity to breath new (undead) life into Flint, give local businesses an economic boost, help local charities, and have fun while doing it please contact me at RoxanneRhoads@aol.com to discuss the possibilities.

The Midget's House One Day Book Blitz Excerpt and Giveaway

PrologueMarch 2004The Height of the Last Florida Real Estate Boom
A faded gray Buick clunker idled in the winding drive. Palm trees whipped by the wind blowing off Sarasota Bay cast tentacle-like shadows across its chassis.    The plump young night nurse slipped out of the house by the side door. She hadn't dared leave until she was certain her patient was asleep but, having heard the deep, even snores, she felt confident that the amply medicated old lady would be unconscious at least until daybreak.    Enid Parker's bones had gone brittle and her muscles had atrophied, making it impossible for her to do much beyond lie in her bed if she did awaken. Her hair, long since leached of all color, had thinned to baby fine strands. As senile and infirm as she was though, Enid could still make a ruckus when she felt ignored. The nurse had earned several screeches of complaint over the past three evenings, which was how long she'd been employed as Enid Parker's caregiver. She was glad for the work and accustomed to difficult patients so she didn't consider turning down the assignment even after learning that an earlier nurse had walked off the job in the middle of the night, blithering incomprehensibly. Some other nurses simply couldn't hack it, she knew, but she didn't have much sympathy for them. Handling the job, where crotchety old folks were concerned, meant sucking it up when they heaved verbal abuse, not just parceling out the pills at the appropriate hours or cleaning up the messes from their saggy bottoms to their soiled linens.   But now that the old woman slept, she saw no reason to lurk in the creaky old house through the night.   She darted to the car, swung her wide hips onto the passenger seat, and quietly pulled the door closed behind her. The young man at the wheel put his sputtering vehicle in gear, drove it past the decorative iron gate and on toward the outside world. She'd be back in plenty of time with no one the wiser.   *      Despite enough medication to sedate a Clydesdale horse, Enid Parker did not rest easily. Moments after her nurse's departure, her creped eyelids fluttered open.    "Papa?" she murmured. "Are we going to the circus? Can I ride the elephant? You promised."   Not getting an answer, she reached out tentatively with one arthritic hand, as if attempting to see through her fingertips. Wispy white eyebrows bunched together as clouded pupils strained to focus.    Then anger sparked in those dull eyes.    "Lucinda!" she shrieked. "You get out of here. Get out. GET OUT OF MY HOUSE. My house ..." Her heart accelerated, pumping blood through tired veins and arteries, tingling her desiccated skin to an almost healthy pink.   Forgetting her infirmity, Enid forced herself upright, determined to eject the intruder.   The effort exhausted what little life was left in her.

The Midget's House is a tale of two women (one alive, and the other long dead), each mourning lost love and struggling for control of the one place that feels like home.

Marisa Delano is thrilled when she unexpectedly inherits the fairy-tale like cottage on the bay—until she learns that Lucinda Lacey, a sideshow midget who died on the property in 1924, still inhabits it. As Marisa searches for answers about the unwelcome presence in her new home, all the clues lead to one conclusion: on the day Lucinda died, she murdered her lover, circus owner Cyrus Parker.

Alternating between Lucinda's and Marisa's perspectives, The Midget's House takes readers from the carnivals, circuses, and freak shows of the early twentieth century, to the boom-and-bust of today's Florida.

Haunting in every sense of the word, this genre-blending tale will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

Red Hot Readers

Are you looking to build your reader base and have your own email distribution list for future releases? We all know giving our work away is a great way to reach readers, but if you don't get some information from them in return it's not worth much.
Red Hot Readers is a new concept on Facebook. Dedicated to matching readers with authors, it launched on Monday and has had over 600 ebooks requested in five days, close to 900 "likes" on the page and at last count, a newsletter subscriber list of 163. Surrender to Me by Tara Fox Hall

My name is Tara Fox Hall. I'm a new author that specializes in paranormal romance and horror.

My first work published was the paranormal romance Surrender To Me.

Here is the Blurb:

Former aristocrat turned lowly vampire Devlin Dalcon gets by on his supernatural charm, swindling others for money and goods. When Devlin encounters bride-to-be Annabelle—another potential victim—he finds the tables have turned as he falls in love with her.

Here is an excerpt!

Hurt and angry, I searched through the forest for easy blood. Angry at myself for my outburst and the stupidity I'd shown in telling a woman about to be married that I loved her. That was a mistake for a man of eighteen to make, not one that was over two hundred years old. I was supposed to be helping my gypsy partners steal dowry treasure. I wasn't here for romance. Besides, Anna had made it clear she would never surrender to me...

"Devlin? Devlin!"

Intrigued she had followed me, I veered towards the sweet sound. "Anna? What are you doing outside the walls?"

There was a sudden scream of terror. "Devlin!"

Running as fast as I could, I burst into a meadow. Anna was on the far side, cornered against a stand of fallen trees, her eyes wide. In front of her was the largest bear I'd ever seen. It was enraged, most likely because of the five arrows sticking out from it at various spots, seeping blood steadily.

Her fiancé and his band of noble idiots had gone hunting today. They'd left the hunt when they got bored, left the bear to die from its wounds. The animal was mad from pain, but its death was likely days of suffering away. It would kill her in a few moments; it was already readying itself to strike.

I raced to her side, and got in front of her, just in time for its claws to lay open my chest when I took the blow meant for her. I let out a scream, baring my fangs, and launched myself at it.

My chances weren't good. I had only my fangs and a knife. And the bear was much bigger than I was.
It struck me again, its razor sharp claws digging deep. The pain was excruciating, and I screamed as it rent me, my fury mounting.

I tried in vain to break its neck, but its bones were too strong for that. I stabbed it repeatedly, but the thing wouldn't stop. Blood loss from my shredded chest, my clawed arms, and my chewed-on right shoulder was rapidly weakening me.

With the last of my ebbing strength, I grasped one of the embedded arrows, and shoved with everything I had left. The arrow pushed deep, and the bear let out a keening sound. It clawed frantically, deepening my chest wounds, but I clenched my teeth and kept pushing. Soon, it gave its last gasp, and collapsed on me.

Anna was hysterical, crying and screaming, and to risk drinking blood in front of her wasn't optimal. But there was nothing for it; it was feed or die. So I reared back, bearing my fangs, and sank them into the bear. I drank for a long time, until my grievous wounds closed. Then I pushed the carcass off me, and sat up.

Anna had calmed down, and stopped screaming. She was just out of reach, watching me intently. I imagined she was figuring she should have taken her chances with the bear.

I looked over at her. "Now you know," I said sadly.

I expected her to shrink away. To my utter shock, she got up, and came over to me. "You're a nightwalker?" she said quietly. "You drink blood?"

She must mean vampire. "Yes."

The Apocalypse Gene Tour: Guest Blog and Giveaway

What Janus Sees

January is named for the Roman God, Janus. He had two faces, one facing forward to see what lies ahead, and the other facing back, regarding that whicIn fact, the word "janus" is based on the ancient Italian (Etruscan) word "jauna" which means "door". Janus is often referred to as the God of Gates and Doors, which open to roads not yet traveled and closes on the places already seen. January is a time to open doors and close them, to learn from the past, recognize goals not reached, and resolve to change.
When Janus of the grizzled bearded looks back on 2011, he might notice that extra ten pounds Suki and Carlyle packed on, how it had melted away by July, only to have crept back in full and then some by December when the cheesecakes, sweet potatoes, and turkeys weighed down the table with their yearly reappearance. But hey, this was a momentous year full of celebration—which deserves feasting—and anxiety—which demands sugary (Suki) fried (Carlyle) comforting.
He'll see Suki and Carlyle nervous as they await the release of their book because it combines YA, Dytopia, Urban Fantasy, and Sci-Fi. So why the nail-biting? Suki and Carlyle haven't seen anything out there like it. It has no vampires or werewolves; is that terrific or terrible? There's no way to know. As always, and as it should be with novels, the readers will decide. Will they plunk down hard-earned money in a tough economy for a novel by two newbies that doesn't fit any known mold? But before the readers comes the professional critics, big ones to, Kirkus "The World's Toughest Book Critics" and Foreword. And . . . they liked it, so much so that it became a "Kirkus Critic's Pick" for Sci-Fi/Fantasy and they used wonderful phrases to describe it like "wildly imaginative" and "breakneck paced" and "a memorable read", but jaded old Janus casts a jaundiced eye as he looks back on the happiness those review inspired.
Janus witnesses our gradual realization that, while many readers will find our story highly entertaining, it is inevitable that some will not. He watches us as we begin to understand that bringing a story to the world is not a sprint but a marathon and that no story will be uniformly loved by all. Old Two-Face smiles (well almost, he's a stern god after all) as he sees our joy at having delivered a story that inspires some readers to contact us or leave reviews saying how much they enjoyed the story.
And what does fresh-faced, clean-shaven, still-innocent Janus see with his forward-riveted gaze? He sees two newly savvy, enthusiastic debut authors on a road they now know must be traveled step-by-step, review by review, and sale by sale. He sees our commitment not to let a day pass without dreaming up horrid, scary, beautiful, moving, and thrilling scenes for our readers. (He also sees the drivel we're bound to write, words that will be edited or deletion, but we won't talk about that.)
Young Janus sees that we will have new ideas, each with the potential to inspire an adventure. Most enlightening of all, he sees that The Apocalypse Gene will not be our only published work but simply the first of many.
What does Janus see for you?

The Apocalypse Gene
By Suki Michelle and Carlyle Clark
Genre: YA Urban Fantasy

Global pandemic is raging. Olivya Wright-Ono's once loving home has been converted to a hospice for the dying. Her ability to see auras forces her to witness, with agonizing detail, the vibrant colors of life consumed by malignancy.
The beautiful and troubled, Mikah, is an elite Empath in the ancient Kindred clan, led by the brooding, ever-morphing, monster named Prime. Mikah has learned a terrible truth .

. . the plague is linked to Kindred origins. When Olivya sees evidence of disease creeping into her mother's aura, she has no one to turn to but Mikah. Can he unearth the Kindred secrets and find a cure? Can she trust this boy whose power allows him to manipulate her very emotions?
With her mother's life, and that of the world, in the balance, Olivya and Mikah embark on a quest to stop the Pandemic, only to discover it is far, far more than a mere disease . .
About the Authors:

Suki Michelle is a life-long Chicagoan, happily divorced and still good friends with her Ex. She lives and writes with her soul-mate, Carlyle Clark. She has one beautiful daughter, Bree, who is the first reader and critic of The Apocalypse Gene, and without her input, it wouldn't be nearly as cool! Suki's other children are of the four-legged type, Dahlia, the German shepherd; Kilala the lazy calico chub-cat; and Koney, the tortoise-shell demon cat from the Seventh Ring.
Carlyle is a burly dude from San Diego. He can look menacing at a glance, but as soon as he opens his mouth, pure intellectual. They are eternally grateful for the day they met at an on-line writer's workshop. They've been together for four years. On the outside. Suki and Carlyle are totally disparate. On the inside, they are the REAL Neo-Twins. You'll have to read The Apocalypse Gene to find out who the Neo-Twins are, but here's a hint: They are twisted devils with mirror-melded auras.
As writers, Suki and Carlyle have complementary skill sets. Lyle is plot master and edgy dialoguer. He is a huge fan of Japanese anime, and he draws upon this to choreograph fight scenes. Suki enjoys painting a character's emotional landscape and writing vivid descriptions. They both have wild imagination.
Suki and Carlyle treasure every opportunity to share their work.

Interview with Kelvin O'Ralph Author of The Beginning

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre? My name's Kelvin O'Ralph, and I'm an undergraduate at a university in the UK. I began writing paranormal romance books after reading and watching the famous Harry Potter and Twilight series. However, what inspired me to write in this genre is mainly due to the fact that I can create my own world and have people intrigued with the world and characters I created.
What inspired you to write this book?I wrote this book after watching the second installment of Twilight: New Moon. However, the urge to create a paranormal world had always been in existence from the time I read 'The Lord of the Rings'.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?Certainly. When writing 'LS: The Beginning', I found it hard to write the female character, Julie. I wanted to portray her exquisite and yet alluring nature. Also, writing the two main characters was quite a challenge. I needed them to have a different dialog than the rest of the characters; simply because they were unique.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?Again, I'd go for Julie Hitchens, the admirer of the main character, Stephen Wilson
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?I let the character's develop, because I found out that some times, the character's disagree with my ideas. For example, I wanted Lisa Morgan to be the captain of the volleyball team and the most popular girl in her class. However, she disagreed. She chose to be the most attractive girl, but quite and composed. Arghh, it angered me :(
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course? My favorite scene in the book is where Stephen Wilson shakes Lisa Morgan's hand. The special effects that took place at that instant will be epic if translated to the big screen.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?Sadly, one needs to read the first book to understand the rest. I feel it's a journey the main character, Stephen Wilson is undergoing, and you need to begin the journey with him to enjoy the ride. And yes, there are extra character's added in the subsequent books. Rachel in 'LS: Deception', Isabella in 'LS: The Final Battle' etc.
Do you ever suffer from writer's block? How do you deal with it?My problem is not really writer's block. Before I start writing a book, I already have all the chapters planned out, which helps to eliminate writer's block, at least most of the time. However, sometimes I get stuck and I can't write even a sentence, not because I don't know what to write, but because I require inspiration to continue writing.
Do you write in different genres?I plan to. My WIP is under the genre, Thriller.
When did you consider yourself a writer? The second readers connected with my characters.

The Beginnning
LS Book 1
By Kelvin O'Ralph

Blurb:

A handshake between strangers has never held so much promise for discovery.

When Stephen Wilson meets Lisa Morgan at his new school in Sloutenville, it is the simple act of extending his hand in greeting that flips both of their worlds upside-down. With the gesture, both discover that in some way they are connected, and that they share the ability to manipulate the elements, fire and water. Though their abilities vary, they share the gift of telepathy allowing them to communicate without words, which creates a bond between them stronger than either had expected.

As the two begin to spend more and more time together, David, Lisa's ex becomes wild with jealousy, and launches multiple attacks on Lisa. In the fight against the dangers that await them around every corner, Stephen and Lisa soon discover that they are up against much greater odds than they had originally known, and that their struggles are far from over

AUTHOR BIO

Kelvin O'Ralph is a student at the University of Wolverhampton, UK. He is an avid writer and reader, who loves writing Fantasy/Romance novels. LS: The Beginning is the first book in his fantasy series 'LS'. He released the sequel early October 2011.

Kelvin is a huge admirer of Emma Watson, the Harry Potter star and hopes one day she gets to act as one of his characters. Personally, he'd love her to act the role of Lisa Morgan in this book. At least, that's how he envisioned it while writing.

Still in his teens, Kelvin has released four books on Amazon Kindle in 2011. He's working on the final book on the 'LS' series and also on a new project. Like most authors, Kelvin hopes one day his books will be transformed onto the big screen.
