The End of Summer Guest Blog and Giveaway with T. Lynne Tolles

Can you believe summer is almost over? I can't.
I'm T. Lynne Tolles and I write New Adult Paranormal Romance. I admit, I do most of my writing in the winter and fall months as I love to write when it's raining, but due to the drought in California, there wasn't a whole lot of rain to be had last season, so I 'm hoping for a better rainy year coming up.
Summer is for vacationing and traveling, at least when you have school age kids, and the fall is the preview of the cooler months to follow. If you're like me, heat is not your friend. I could easily bypass the heat of the summer months though I would miss the smell of blooming jasmine in June and the summer fruits I love so much, but all in all I'm a hermit in the summer.
I'm one of those fair skinned gals that gets sunburned just thinking about the sun.
Have you ever seen those poor souls that fell asleep at the beach or are so crispy fried, it makes you squirm because you know pain they must be in? That's me. I can slather myself in 70SPF and still burn in a matter of minutes. So if you ever come to California to visit me, just look for the blonde gal with vampire white skin...It's probably me - the only Californian without a beautiful bronze glow.
My hope is that YOU had a sunburn-less summer of sweet succulent fruit, tasty BBQs and fond traveling/vacation memories as we move from summer to fall. If you're like me, you're a fanatic for Halloween and can't wait to start planning your decorating scheme for your trick or treaters. But if If you need a fun easy read as you transition yourself from summer to the scheduling nightmares of your children's impending school, sports and other activities, pick up Finding Midnight: A Hellhound Tail - I hope it will put a smile on your face and a chuckle in your heart with it's sappy sweetness and happily ever-after.

Detective Jerah Qassem has built his career as an undercover agent in the dangerous world of drug cartels. But when a ghost from his past is resurrected can he overcome his bitterness in time to save her life?

Excerpt 2
Rissa peeled her eyes open and tossed the pillow off her head. Sun filtered in the room through the cracks of the curtain. A few blinks later, she let out a slow breath. Jerah slept by her side. Propped on her elbows she took a leisurely study of him. Hair mussed and shirtless, his dark toned skin made her mouth water. Two days’ worth of whiskers darkened his firm jaw that hung slightly open. The urge to run her fingers through that curly chest hair pulled at her heart. His abs were ripped and yummy. She grinned and reached out.A cold fist of reality punched her in the gut and Rissa yanked her hand back. She could never jeopardize Jerah’s life like that, no matter how strong the temptation. Even a date was off limits. She jerked up and rubbed the base of her neck. The last two times she dated, both men ended up dead. Nothing but a deep rooted gut feeling suggested foul play, but she would never take that chance again. Besides, a life on the run didn’t make relationships an option. If Rissa were killed that was one thing, but anyone she ever got close to ended up six feet under. Even though Chief Wassom took her in, she had never gone to any family functions and rarely saw him outside of work.Rissa tugged on her shoes and cast one last look at Jerah’s bare chest. Would he still be alive if he had taken her up on her offer of sex eight years ago? Somehow, even from prison, her mother managed to find and kill those she cared about. That was a worse punishment than being tortured to death.          A quick survey of the sparsely furnished room reminded her of her place. No family photos, no personal items, and probably frozen dinners in the freezer. She hated to think Jerah lived like this.Still tired, Rissa padded to the kitchen and peeked inside the refrigerator and frowned. Didn’t Jerah ever have a meal at home? Hungry, she fetched her borrowed jacket and grinned when she spied some cash on the dresser. Jerah hadn’t moved and she flicked another longing glance over him. Look but don’t touch. She did have one thing in common with her mother. They both were in prison. Her mother’s was concrete and bars, hers was forced isolation.Outside, she glanced up and down the street in search of food. Across the street a few tables sat along the sidewalk and she headed in that direction, grateful Jerah had a hefty stash of cash. She passed a phone store and slipped inside. It was past time to get a cell phone and check in with Montoya. Phone in hand, Rissa stepped outside and punched in a quick text. Stomach rumbling, she hurried to the burger joint. Her phone buzzed. “Hello.”“I think Qassem may be the perp.” Montoya’s sharp tone startled her. Ice trailed down her spine. “Why?”“Meet me in one hour in front of the USS Midway Museum.”Rissa frowned when Montoya hung up on her without any more explanation. Something had happened while she was gone. With a bag of burgers, fries, and two large cokes, she hustled back to Jerah’s apartment. Jerah couldn’t be a murderer. He just couldn’t. A lump formed in her throat. She would have never believed her mother could kill either. But she had, right in front of her.

Excerpt:
 “What is that?”
Adrian’s voice startled me. For a second, I was disoriented, the dream clinging to me as it always did. Yes, I was in a car, but I wasn’t the unknown woman driving away from her baby. That wasn’t real. The glare Adrian leveled at my chest was, though.

“Is that a mirror?” He sounded horrified.

I looked down. My locket was open, the mirrored side facing me. At some point while I was sleeping, I must’ve opened it. Adrian’s hand shot out, but this time, I was too fast for him.

“Don’t you dare,” I snapped, holding it out of his reach. “It’s the only picture I have of my sister after you left everything I own back at that hotel in Bennington!”

He lunged again, actually letting go of the steering wheel to reach the side of the car where I held it. With a sharp yank, he wrested the locket from my hands. I tried to snatch it back, but he shoved me into my seat with one hand, finally grabbing the steering wheel with the other.

“Are you crazy?” I shrieked. “You could’ve gotten us killed!” If this hadn’t been a lonely stretch of desert road, our careening into the next lane might’ve had permanent consequences.

“You’re going to get yourself killed,” was his chilling response. Then, still pinning me to my chair with that single hand, he held my locket up.

I gasped. Something dark poked out of the small mirror, like a snake made of blackest smoke. It disappeared when Adrian smashed the mirror against the steering wheel, but an eerie wind whistled through the car, ruffling my hair and stinging my nostrils with its acrid scent.

Adrian muttered a word in that unknown language, and I didn’t need a translator to tell me it was a curse.

“What was that?” My voice was hoarse.

He threw me a pitying glance, which frightened me even more. If he wasn’t angry, we must really be screwed.

His next words proved that. “Brace yourself, Ivy. You’re about to meet a demon.”

I didn’t consider myself religious. My parents used to take Jasmine and me to church on Christmas, but it was more a social event than a pious one. Hearing we were about to be attacked by a demon, however, made me pray like I’d never done before. I just wished I knew if anyone was listening.

Adrian wasn’t praying. He was cursing up a storm, if I correctly translated the spate of words coming from his mouth. He’d also lost that pitying expression, because the looks he shot me now were distinctly grim. It wasn’t the right time, but I couldn’t stop myself from asking the obvious.

“How did it find us?”

Adrian stomped on the accelerator, and the muscle car shot forward like it had rockets in the engine.

“Through the mirror,” he said shortly. “For stronger demons, mirrors act as portals, and you’ve been number one on their Most Wanted list since you escaped them in Bennington.”

I gaped at him. “Maybe you should have told me that?”

“You think I smash every mirror near you because I don’t want you to get conceited?” Then his tone softened. “You’re barely holding it together with what you do know, Ivy. I’m not about to tell you what you can’t handle yet.”
Anger flared, which felt better than the fear that made my blood seem like it had been replaced by ice water.

“No, I wasn’t ready to know that demons used mirrors as portals. I also wasn’t ready to know demons existed, or had kidnapped my sister, or that my parents were dead, or any of the horrible things I’ve dealt with in the past two weeks. But that didn’t stop them from happening, so quit protecting me from the truth, Adrian! It doesn’t help a damn bit!”

Adrian glanced at me, a gauntlet of emotions flitting across his features.

“You’re right. If we survive, I’ll apologize.”

My laughter was bleak. “You, say you’re sorry? Now I really want to live.”

To my surprise, he laughed as well, though it was colored with dark expectancy.

“Hold that thought. You’ll need it.”

Before I could respond, something filled the road in front of us. I would’ve said it was storm clouds, except clouds don’t sweep along the ground like a heavy fog rolling in.

“Shut your vents,” Adrian said, flipping the tiny levers on his side. I did the same, more apprehension filling me as he turned the entire air conditioning system off. No, those weren’t low-hanging clouds. They were something far more ominous.

“Turn around,” I said, my voice suddenly breathy.

“It wouldn’t matter” was Adrian’s chilling reply. “He’d only follow us. I need you to find hallowed ground, Ivy.”
I couldn’t take my eyes away from the billowing clouds in front of us. They were so dark, they seemed to devour the beams that came from Adrian’s headlights.
“All right,” I mumbled. “Give me your phone, I’ll look up the nearest church or cemetery.”

“It’s too late for that,” he said, stunning me. “You need to find it yourself.”
“How?” I burst out. We were almost at the line of black clouds. The temperature in the car plummeted, making my skin feel like it had turned to ice.

“It’s in your bloodline,” Adrian said, swinging off the road so sharply that the back end began to fishtail. “You can sense hallowed ground, so find some, Ivy. Now.”

“I don’t know how,” I shouted.

The car shuddered over the uneven terrain, bouncing so much I almost hit my head on the roof, but I didn’t tell Adrian to slow down. That wall of darkness filled up the rear window of the Challenger until I couldn’t see the glow of our tail lights anymore.

“Yes, you do.” A growl that sounded comforting compared to the horrible hissing noises coming from outside the car.

“I don’t!” What was that flash of white on my side of the car? Or that new, ripping sound? Oh God, were those teeth scraping away at the metal on my door?

“It’s getting in, it’s getting in!”

“He can’t get in the car.”

Adrian’s strong voice broke through my panic. I stared at him, my eyes starting to burn from the acrid stench that crept in through parts of the car we hadn’t been able to seal.

“I warded it against demons a long time ago,” he went on.

I felt better about that for three seconds, which was how long it took before the car lifted up on one side like a gargantuan hand had swatted it. For a paralyzing moment, I wasn’t sure if we were going to flip completely over. Then we crashed down hard enough to make the windows shatter, and I tasted blood from my jaw snapping shut on my tongue.

“’Course, that doesn’t mean he can’t tear the car apart around us,” Adrian said, stomping on the gas as soon as all four wheels were on the ground. “We’re running out of time. Where’s the hallowed ground?”

“I. Don’t. Know,” I screamed. My heart was pounding out of my chest from terror. If I knew a way out of this, I’d take it.

“Yes, you do,” he insisted, those sapphire eyes searing me when he glanced over. “Tell me which direction you want to run. That’s the right way, I promise.”

Which way did I want to run? In whatever direction this living nightmare wasn’t! The car lifted again, and everything in me braced for another impact. That awful hissing noise grew into a roar, and Adrian’s gaze met mine. In those darkly beautiful depths, I realized these would be the last moments of our lives, if I didn’t use an ability I’d never heard of before.

In the seconds before the car came crashing down, I closed my eyes.

Concentrated on which direction I wanted to flee to, and tried to ignore the pain as flying glass pelted me from all sides. My instincts were screaming at me to run from the horrible thing outside these crumbling metal walls, and I let those instincts consume me, filling me until I couldn’t focus on anything else. I needed to get out of here. I needed to leave right now and go…there.

“That way,” I said hoarsely, opening my eyes and pointing.

Adrian’s hand closed over mine, his grip strong and sure. Then the car crashed down hard enough to make my vision go black and my whole body ache, but he didn’t hesitate. As soon as the worst of the impact was over, he grabbed his coat, yanked me into his arms, and then flung us out of the car.

His body took the brunt of the impact, but it still felt like I hit the ground with almost the same force as the car crashing down. My yelp was swallowed up by a tremendous boom! as Adrian threw something at the fog that rushed us. White flashed, more bright and brilliant than a lightning bolt. Those hideous clouds recoiled with a scream as though they were in pain.

Adrian leaped up, still holding me in his arms. Then he began to run in the direction I’d pointed, leaving that ugly, writhing darkness behind us.

Even without the nightmarish clouds surrounding us, I could barely see.

Nothing but desert stretched out in front of us, and the headlights from Adrian’s car were now too far away to do any good. That strange flash of light was gone, too. Even the moon seemed to hide, but Adrian’s incredible strides never wavered. It was as if his eyes had night-vision technology built into them.

His speed had startled me when I was only an observer of it. Now that I was locked in his arms, hurtling through the night like I’d been strapped to the front of a bullet train, it filled me with terrified awe. His heart pounded next to my cheek, but he couldn’t be human. No mere mortal could move this way.

Hell, some hybrid cars couldn’t go this fast.

“Where is it, Ivy?” he yelled, the wind snatching away his words almost before I could hear them.

I wasn’t sure anymore. All the darkness had disoriented me, and it’s not like there was a neon sign that said “Hallowed Ground This Way.” I didn’t say that, though. What I saw when I glanced over his shoulder froze the words in my throat.

That roiling mass of evil was right behind us. I shouldn’t have been able to see it against the midnight-soaked desert, but I could. The shadows forming it were filled with such seething malevolence that their darkness gleamed. Then something like a huge mouth gaped open, teeth long and razor sharp.

“Adrian!” I screamed, tightening my arms around him.

He didn’t look back, though his grip on me turned bruising. “Tell me where to go, Ivy!”

I forced myself to look away from the appalling sight, but I couldn’t look ahead. Sand-filled wind stung my eyes from how fast Adrian ran. I couldn’t see, but maybe I didn’t have to.

I closed my eyes like I had back in the car. Concentrated on my need to be as far away from the formless death monster as I could. My concentration broke when something sharp lashed my legs before digging in as though trying to claw its way up my body. I screamed again, and Adrian snarled, somehow increasing his incredible speed. With a final slice, the claws left my body, but something hot and wet ran down my legs.

I choked back my next scream, my heart pounding as fast as the booming beneath my cheek. Then I concentrated again, pain and panic finding the switch in my mind that I hadn’t realized was there.

“That way,” I said, pointing without opening my eyes.

Adrian changed direction, the hard pumping of his legs shooting pain into me from the endless impacts, but I didn’t care. Another roar sounded behind us, growing closer, until I could almost feel its icy breath on my cheek. My legs throbbed, anticipating more claws slicing through my skin, and though I knew I shouldn’t, I opened my eyes.

Interview and Giveaway Variants by Michelle C. Reilly

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
Well, it was a funny thing. When I started this series, I thought it could be either a paranormal or urban fantasy romance. So, I did a little digging and found that, because my background story with the Variants could be a story on its own, the book would be considered an urban fantasy. When I was done with it in October 2013, I went to a local writer’s conference and pitched it to some editors and agents. Imagine my surprise when I was told it was considered by two of the three to be a Science Fiction book. Mainly because my male character is from another planet. Well, that definitely took the air out of my sails. I hadn’t read science fiction in years. So, how was I going to market this? How was I going to sell it? After considering my options, I decided I’d self-publish, because I knew it was going to be difficult to sell this book into a particular genre. Why not cover them all? So, I, myself, consider Variants to be an Urban Fantasy/Paranormal/Sci-Fi Romance. How ‘bout those beans?
What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much?
I love the paranormal world because there’s so much I can do there. It’s like giving me a huge wall sized whiteboard and a thousand different markers and telling me to have at it. Oh, the possibilities!
Anathergians (and the Variants) have fangs. The Anathergians use them sparingly: as part of their transition into becoming a full-fledged Anathergian and immortal, to exchange blood (using a certain method) to become Lifemates with someone (and they continue to exchange blood during sex), and, as a last resort, they will use their fangs to fight.
The Variants use their fangs to brutally kill someone, though they don’t use them to exchange blood.
The use of fangs in exchange of blood (and not for food) has always fascinated me. To me, this is a being essentially taking in the essence of another being. Part of their soul, if you will. I’ve always found this so fascinating. How much more intimate can you become with another person?

Please tell us about your latest release.
Variants introduces us to Auden and Leah.
Auden is a very powerful king who came to Earth over five-thousand years ago. His planet was destroyed and he and his people took refuge on our planet. They look and act like humans, but they’re extremely powerful. The more royal a person is, the stronger they are. Because Auden has lived so long, he’s having a hard time keeping control of his thoughts and his powers. This can be very dangerous, since he’s the most powerful of all the Anathergians. A Lifemate anchors Anathergians. The two become a cohesive unit and meld together, making them even stronger.
It’s Leah’s sixteenth birthday when the story begins. It was a curious day for her because she noticed an old woman staring at her through the school window. She lives with her foster family, who she abhors, except her foster brother, Ceadan, who’s six years younger than her. The sun rises and shines over her brother. She’s extremely smart and has a photographic memory. On the night of her birthday, her step-dad decides to get a bit rough with her. When he threatens Ceadan, Leah fights back and does something to the man she doesn’t understand. She runs away and is soon surrounded by women who claim Leah is a witch. They want to take her away so she can learn how to use her powers. Of course, Leah thinks it’s a bunch of B.S. And there was no way she was going to leave Ceadan. After wrangling some promises out of the women to protect Ceadan (Leah can be very persuasive when she wants to be), and realizing she could never return to her home, she decides to go with them. Four years later, just after her 20thbirthday, Leah is excelling at her magical powers. But, she has an incident that her head teacher realizes isn’t normal for a witch. Leah uses powers that witches don’t have. And her eyes glow when she uses them. This is something only Anathergians can do. So, the teacher contacts Auden to ask for his assistance.
The Variants are humans who have gone through a transfusion in an attempt to turn them into Anathergians. The process doesn’t have a very good success rate and, most times, causes the person to go crazy and, eventually, die.
When Auden and his men discover these Variants, and what’s happening to them, it’s quite abhorrent. You see, the Anathergians have sworn to protect the human race. It’s what they do. They’re the ones that can go after the terrorists that the U.S. military can’t get to. They’re the ones that get the things that go bump in the night. When Auden believes that one of his men is providing DNA to make these transfusions, he’s angry and disgusted.
When Auden meets Leah, he’s extremely intrigued. Since the Anathergians have so few children, he and his group keep close track of any of their people—Anathergians or humans—that become pregnant. Leah came out of the blue. Plus, she’s extremely powerful for her age. Of course, that’s not the only reason he’s so interested in her.
Unexpectedly, Leah goes through her Anathergian transition. The transition causes the person to become violent and extremely sexually active. They also need a blood exchange to survive. However, this can be tricky, because if the blood exchange happens a certain way, the couple could accidently become Lifemates. And when Auden believes he’s the only person who can help her with the transition, he finds this out… the hard way.
It’s soon discovered that the DNA being provided for the Variant transfusions isn’t coming from one of Auden’s men. It’s coming from an Anathergian—and extremely powerful Anathergian—that Auden or his men had never known before.
That’s all I say about Variants for now.  If you want to know the rest of this luscious story, you’re going to have to get the book. ;)
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
I do, actually. I have a very specific website I use for names and, often, I do try to match them up with what I believe fits their character. But, I’ve used this formula for mainly secondary characters. Auden’s name has a very special meaning and I’m still waiting for someone to figure it out. Leah was just the name that came to me. It had always been her name. Ceadan was a name provided to me by a very good friend, and I felt it fit perfect, since his eyes are the color of a turbulent green sea.

Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
I do love writing about Ceadan. I have all kinds of plans for him (along with many of the other very Alpha males in the book).
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
I don’t really have a formula for them. I try to let the character flesh themselves out.  I have an image of what they look like in my head. And, unlike many authors, I don’t go looking for photos. I just let it come to me.  I will tell you, I nearly choked on my popcorn when I saw the last scene at the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier—the one where Bucky Barnes is at the Smithsonian. That was Gunner. I could NOT believe it. It’s been difficult to find images close to Auden. I’ve found a few. Ceadan, because he’s fourteen in most of the book, has been difficult, too.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
I do love Auden’s reaction when he first sees Leah. He’s quite dumbfounded, which is saying something for someone who’s so very powerful and so in control of himself.
Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
Some of the background research I did on Auden was really interesting. Not really mentioning what it was. Someone will probably eventually figure it out.
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?
In the Anathergian world, normal humans are unaware of them. And they like it that way. They don’t want to be known. They want to live in their underground and just excel at what they do: getting the bad guys or the supernatural things that normal humans are afraid of. They’re not afraid of anything… usually.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
Variants is the first book in a trilogy. So, I think so far I’ve done a good job with giving a bit of background for the second book, but it’s probably best to start with book one for the trilogy.  The rest of the books after the trilogy (and I’m planning some lovely novellas as well), should be okay to start wherever they like.
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
I like to write in coffee shops because the background noise is kind of like a hum and not so distracting. When I’m at home, I’ll often put on brown noise to help me concentrate.
Do you write in different genres?
My first book was a straight out time travel romance. I never finished it, but I hope to one day. So far, I haven’t published in any other genres, but I have many planned. Since I’m a former Hospital Corpsman in the U.S. Navy, I’d like to write some SEAL books.

When did you consider yourself a writer?
I’m not really sure. I was a technical writer/editor/instructional developer for years, but even then I didn’t really consider myself a writer. I guess when I opened the box to my first proof of Variants and saw my name on the cover did it don on me that I achieved my goal of being published and being a real writer.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
I allow myself to purge on donuts about one every six months. They’re my weakness.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
I’ve done web development for many years. I work two jobs, and both of them are heavily involved with being in front of a computer. So, that’s where I’m often found. I love going to the movies—action, superheroes, and sci-fi are some of my favorites. But I also love a good romance, too. I’m passionate about my kids, my two cats, and my dog. I’m also passionate about soccer. I coached and managed teams for many years, so I love the game.
What was the last amazing book you read?
I like to read all kinds of different genres. I love the Robert Ludlum original Bourne trilogy. I also love Karen Marie Moning’s Fever Series and Highlander books. I love all of the Harry Potter books. But, the latest book I fell in love with was Howard E. Wasdin’s non-fiction book SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper. It was real and deep. It really got to me to think what our service members do for us on a daily basis and we’re never even aware of it.
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
In bed. Period. :) I love snuggling under the covers and reading.
What can readers expect next from you?
I’m working very hard on WITCHES, book two in the Anathergians Trilogy. I’m hoping to have it online no later than October. I’m also looking at doing a quick 20k word novella involving one of the more luscious Anathergian warriors.
Where can readers find you on the web?
All over the place, but mainly at:http://www.michellecreilly.com/https://www.facebook.com/michellecorareilly@MichelleCReillyhttps://plus.google.com/u/2/109734337692592060303https://www.youtube.com/user/michellecreilly
Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
Sure! I’ll give you a bit of background first. Auden’s been pushing Leah away, and Leah’s been pretty confused. They’ve gone to a large battle together (Leah’s first real battle) and Auden is starting to realize that he has some feelings for her. I’m not giving the entire scene… just some bits and pieces.
Auden clasped her hand. “Come with me.”
Not daring to question him when he was so on the brink, she followed. He nearly dragged her through the curved hallways until they came to his door. Staring at it for a moment, he squared his shoulders and pressed his hand to the panel.
When they entered, the low lighting caste an amber glow on the furniture. She glanced to the left toward his office, but he pulled her to the right to a pair of double doors. Her heart skipped like it was playing a round of hopscotch when she realized where they were headed. He released her hand, opened both doors wide, and stepped in. She hesitated and then followed him. Leah gaped at the size of the room. Against the left wall was a sitting area with a bar and floor to ceiling bookshelves packed tight with all manner of books. To the right was a bathroom.
The centerpiece drawing most of her attention was the huge bed dominating the room. The four poster bed was covered in brown ermine and opaque gold material draped across and down the intricately carved posts.
Auden stepped in front of her, the corners of his sensual mouth tugging downward as he regarded her. He reached out a hand, and ran his finger along her hairline, down her jaw, and then her neck.
His fingers continued their trek down her shirt, over the swell of her breast, her nipple, down her stomach, and to the hem of her shirt. Heart pounding, her breaths increased as she watched the sensual path of his exploration.
He stopped and brought both hands under her shirt, up the sides of her rib cage, and continued upward until the top came free.
With it also came the hair band holding back her hair, and the strands landed in her face. She lifted her hands to push the hair out of the way, the movement causing her breasts to rise. His gaze drifted to her red bra and then back to her face. The heat within their dark depths caused a dampness to suffuse her, making her crave him. She stood on her toes to take his mouth. Her hands went around the back of his neck as she sucked and then nibbled his bottom lip. He was warm and tasted of a blend all his own. She took a deep breath, and his moist exhalation filled her. The need to have his skin against hers overcame her and her hands glided down his hard chest and abdomen, and she lifted his shirt. He helped her pull it off, and she thrilled to feel his hot skin against hers.
Auden bent down, brought his arm beneath her knees, and carried her to his bed. He reached behind her, unfastened her bra, and dropped it on the floor.
Embarrassed, she wanted to cover herself. Though they had already been together, that night she had been completely uninhibited, which wasn’t like her. But when she noticed the awe in his gaze, she stopped, enjoying his admiring look as it feasted on her breasts. A low moan slipped past her lips.
He kneeled and removed her boots and socks, tossing them across the floor…
“Turn over,” he said.
Her eyes widened a fraction, but she did as he asked, and rolled onto her stomach. He scooted her forward, the ermine fur rubbing against her sensitive nipples. His hands grasped her hips and raised them so she rested on her knees. He placed his own knees on either side of her legs and leaned over her.
“Do you have any idea how afraid I was tonight?” he asked, his voice guttural and his breath tickling her ear.
She considered him through the strands of hair covering her face. “I felt your fear.”He brought his hand up and swiped her hair out of her face and nipped at her earlobe. “And do you know why I was afraid?”
“Because you lost some of your brethren?”
“No,” he said, his breaths coming harder. “I was afraid I would lose you,” he admitted and slammed into her.

excerpt
The coffee, the smoke, the music, the air. They connect the future in some twisted roadside frenzy, and Annie knows she’s been here too long. The songs in the café move and she gets lost somewhere in the sound. Suddenly she feels the downbeat smooth across her cheek. She remembers that drumbeat, close as Sebastian’s heart was when he told her that he loved her. His voice, warm across silk sheets. She remembers crying as the bass line slid through empty air after he was gone. She’s not going to cry anymore. She walks out of the cafe with a backwards wave towards the barista. She walks, and all of the sunset junkies walk past her. Crowding her off the sidewalk with tired eyes, searching for just one beautiful thing to hold onto. Annie wishes she had that one thing. It only lasts a second, and it’s gone. Mistaking repetition for inspiration and emptiness for satisfaction, leaving her alone to drink in the hideous magnificence of the slowly lowering night. Like wine spilling over, stained by ocean and moon.Annie shakes the strange vision from her head and finds herself falling into another one, but this time it’s right there. A woman hidden in a mess of hair and moonlight, crossed by shadows and pale skin. The street is dark, but the woman almost glows.“I didn’t mean to startle you. At least,” she smiles, “not much.”Annie is flustered, scratched by a sharp edge of Déjà vu as she hears echoes of something Phillip said to her a long time ago. This was someone like him… but definitely different. “Oh, no, I mean… it’s okay. I’m sorry.” Annie wonders why she’s suddenly apologizing. The woman’s gaze is sickly sweet, and it lasts a little longer than Annie likes. She starts to step away, but a hand falls on her shoulder. She’s behind her, still smiling, and Annie didn’t even see her move. The streetlight flickers, a flash of darkness and Annie is suddenly aware of all the silence. She’s suddenly aware of the fear as well. Annie thinks about running, or screaming, or both.“Don’t.”And she finds that she can’t. The fear moves into desperation, then a slow resignation. “Who are you?”“My name is Pandora.”“What do you want?”Pandora laughs lightly, and it sounds like glass.“I want you to be very careful.”“What do you mean? What did I do?”“It’s what you are going to do that concerns me.”Annie stutters against her fear. “I-I’m not going to do anything.”Pandora shakes her head. “Sometimes I forget how little you humans see. Consider this a warning. You didn’t listen the last time I warned you, and I do not like repeating myself. Don’t follow your friends.”Annie stares, nervous and confused. “What do you mean the last time? I don’t remember you at all.”“Of course you don’t.” Pandora fixes her eyes on Annie and it feels like lightning. “But remember this. This is not three strikes and you’re out. This is it. Leave the jukebox alone, or you leave this life.”Pandora stands tall, pale, menacingly elegant, and Annie imagines that this is how flies must feel when they suddenly hit a web. The dark magnificence of the spider moving towards another meal. Except no spider could move like this. She narrows her eyes and Annie’s blood shivers within her skin. “Sebastian didn’t listen to me. Maybe you should.”The woman releases her gaze, and before Annie can let a breath escape, she’s alone. She turns in a full circle—nothing. No one. She’s shaking.
All Annie wants is a drink, so she heads towards the Viceroy, where she’s supposed to meet Martin. It’s a small bar, but quiet. The drinks are strong and the music is decent, but Martin isn’t there yet. Annie sits near the back and faces the door behind a vodka martini. A slight touch of safety. She tries to clear her mind, to relax. She tries to not think about what happened. It doesn’t work. All she can think about is Sebastian. Who is Pandora? What did she do to Sebastian? Was she there when the accident happened? Annie can barely remember that, but she knows it was bad, and that maybe it’s best not remembered. And how did Pandora vanish so quickly? She sips her drink, knowing that Pandora is not like most people in this world. She is something that probably shouldn’t exist but is too strange to believe, so Annie covers it with more alcohol and comforting thoughts of illusions and hallucinations. She’s frightened by shadows of what might happen, and Pandora’s words echo in her head…“You humans…”This isn’t happening, Annie insists to herself and proves it by getting another drink. The music plays against the night, and Annie feels a memory shivering somewhere between the song and her cigarette. There was a time, long before she met her high school friends, when she believed in magic. There was a time, before nicotine nights and empty alcohol, when she would sit in her room and stare out the window and hope for something amazing. Something wonderful to sweep in out of the night and take her away. There was a time when she wasn’t scared. Another drink. It stains her tongue with silence. Her nails dig a little too deep into her arm, and she stains her skin with violence. Sometimes it feels better to bleed than to need. She places her hands on either side of her glass, not touching it, and tries to relax her thoughts. Her eyes slide heavy across the smoke of the room. Another sip and a slow thought of Sebastian slides in alongside. It feels like red wine time, but Annie knows she’s not going to start drinking that, not now. They had a history, lined up in empty glasses and faded labels, but that’s all it was. History. And sadness. She sighs, skipping over the wine like smooth stones sailing across the ocean, but that doesn’t mean she’s not drinking. She’s drinking to remember how to hang onto that space between cigarettes that can last almost as long as the silence between songs. Sometimes Annie forgets that all it takes is a quarter to break her heart, as the jukebox spits out another sad song. Sometimes she forgets how small the world really is.

Interview with Sam Stafford Author of The Vampire Revelation: Demon Gene

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
Well, I grew up in the southern United States and am a scientist by training.  I was inspired to write this book during the time between my first professional job and before starting my second professional job.  I decided to write this novel because I have always enjoyed the vampire genre and felt like there was room to start a new twist in the classic tale.  My story makes every effort to protect the basic history of vampirism while introducing scientific explanations for the mysterious powers and limitations of the vampire.
What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much?
I think what fascinates me so much is that the legend and stories about vampire-like creatures permeate throughout so many cultures.  There are so many similar stories that have independently developed in various countries and in some way the similarities seem way too coincidental.   The line between the reality and fantasy of vampires is blurred and creates a great deal of suspense and intrigue without an author ever writing down a word.  There is built in drama from the start, it’s been passed down in our culture over generations, it’s in our psyche, and that fascinates me.
What inspired you to write this book?
Well, as I said I have been fascinated with the vampire genre for a long time and when I was in between jobs I actually entertained the idea of becoming an author.  While, I studied the opportunity more I realized it might be better to keep a day job than to become a full time author.
Please tell us about your latest release.
The novel is entitled the “Vampire Revelation: Demon Gene” and it is the first book in a series which I believe will end with three separate novels.  The novel details the science behind the origins of vampirism in a suspense thriller style.  There are a lot of twists and turns and several separate story lines that will keep the reader guessing.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
It really depends.  Some names I pick just because I like them.  Others I pick based on visualizing what the character looks like and thinking if I saw that person what would I think their name would be.  So really it depends.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
Yes, Ethan Baxter was probably the hardest character for me to write even though there are some small similarities between him and myself.  Trapped under the thumb of sinister people, how far will we bend?  How much will our motives and ethics change with changing circumstances?  Ethan meets some unusual obstacles and expounding on his reactions to these obstacles was a bit unnerving at times.   I went from pitying to hating him and back again.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
Yes, Harley Mason was probably my favorite character to develop.  She is so beautiful, intelligent, and courageous even though she has dealt with so much loss.  People deal with loss differently.  Many shutdown and put up walls changing their interactions with others forever.  I wanted Harley to personify how I think many of us would deal with loss.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?

I started out writing 5 or 6 facts about each main character before I started writing the book, but as the story unfolded and new characters entered the storyline I generally stopped this type of character sketching.  As the story becomes alive I find that characters naturally appear in the storyline, they just make sense to include them given the situation.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
My favorite scene of the story involves the vampire hunters, their interactions and their business dealings.  After writing this chapter I really started to believe that I had something here worth keeping.  These characters and their development made me excited to actually finish the story.
Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
Yes, that there truly could be a scientific explanation for the legendary attributes of vampires.  This book tries to help the reader understand the science behind the vampire’s origins.  I wanted the reader to understand the science behind vampirism and then think about what value would there for these traits in our society.  To what lengths would people go to manipulate these powers for their own purposes?
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
Well the other books are not finished even though the scope of the book is known.  I wanted to see if this book would find an audience before I finished the series.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
I am a hobby writer, so I only write on vacations or weekends.   So basically I have so little time to write between my real job and family time that I do not have time to have writer’s block.  When I write it is planned time and precious to me.
Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
I put on movies in the background while I write.  Usually they are fantasy or science fiction movies.  I think when I finished the last part of the book I watched the whole Harry Potter series back to back to back.
Do you write in different genres?
I have outlined a few stories in other genres, but have not written the stories yet.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
Finally, felt like a writer when I saw the book proof.
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
80’s hair band music, and mint chocolate chip ice cream
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
Anything related to NFL football and scientific research
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
Actually listen to books on CD in the car on my commute to work.  Great way for me to get through some books.
What can readers expect next from you?
I expect it will be the next installment of “The Vampire Revelation” although I have a few short story ideas I would like to finish.
Where can readers find you on the web?
Working on a website, but right now anyone can find me on Goodreads.
Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?

Would not know which part to choose, but what I can say is that you will enjoy the story.  It will make you think and keep you wanting to read the next chapter.

Excerpt 1
Laryssa had heard the customer behind her, but the damn mirror wire wouldn’t seem to catch right.  It kept slipping and she cursed under her breath, hoping she wouldn’t drop it.  If she could just hold it up a minute longer, she could get it to hang squarely on the wall.  She fingered the hook that she’d just renailed into the wall and then moved her thumb over to the thin metal string.  With a final shove upward, she attempted to flick it into place.  But as the wire caught, it sliced into her flesh.  A sharp sting threw her off balance, and her pumps began to waver.  Shit.  Not again.“Oh my God!” Laryssa squeaked as she fell backwards, fully expecting to crack her head open on one of the many sharp-edged desks that sat adjacent to where she’d been working.  As she felt strong male hands slide up under her ribcage, grazing her breasts, she gasped.  She wasn’t sure whether to thank the stranger or call the police, but as she turned her face to try to see him, she immediately recognized her rescuer. “It’s you,” she stammered, clutching his arms. Laryssa giggled nervously, realizing how once again she’d foolishly fallen in front of the sexy vampire.  And like last night, he’d caught her.  She couldn’t believe how clumsy she’d all of a sudden become.  She tried to relax and find her footing, but her heart was beating so fast that she could barely think.  What is he doing here in my shop?  How did he find me? Like a story book flipping pages, her mind whirled until she remembered what she’d done last night at the club.  She’d fought off the asshole who’d grabbed her at the bar.  The feel of his hands around her throat had forced her fear into overdrive.  The knife had only been a few inches away, but still too far.  Desperation had taken over as her power surged, calling the blade to her fingertips.  Jamming it into his neck was as instinctive as breathing.  Kill or be killed, she’d always choose the former.  She’d run into the alley, refusing to discuss it with management.  The only one who knew her was Avery and there was no way her friend would have divulged her identity to the vampire.  She’d be more likely to turn him into a three horned sheep before she’d squeal.  The only way the vampire could have found her would have been if he’d followed her home. A brush to her breast reminded her that she was still being held upright by him, and Laryssa felt her face grow red.  Arousal licked over her skin.  Cautiously, she rooted her shoes on the floor and turned around, steeling her nerves.“I’m so sorry,” she said.“My pleasure, mademoiselle, but I suggest you avoid heights in the future.”Surreptitiously, she stole a glance at him, which reminded her how incredibly handsome he was.  His short dark hair was perfectly coiffed.  His white dress shirt hung casually over the waistband of his jeans.  Laryssa forced herself to look away, trying not to stare at the masculine features of his face. Straight nose, square jaw and perfectly kissable lips… lips that were smooth talking and way too articulate, teasing her with every word he spoke.  Beads of sweat broke out across her forehead.  It felt as if someone had turned up the heat, her skin was on fire.  She noticed his eyes were no longer on hers and had dropped to her chest.  They lingered only a second, and then he met her gaze and smiled.  She looked downward and noticed that several buttons had come undone in her fall, revealing the edges of her white lace bra.  Could this day get any more embarrassing?  Laryssa’s fingers shook as she buttoned her sweater.“I’m so sorry.  I just…you just…I just…”  Great, first I’m a klutz and now I can’t speak.  She bit her lip, paused and then took a deep breath before starting again.  “Thank you for catching me.” “Again.”  Léopold watched her as she adjusted her clothes, wishing to rip the rest of the pearly buttons from their fragile seams. But he refused to let the beast within take what it wanted.  No, he’d find out what the hell she was before showing her his true nature. “Yes, thank you…again.”  She smoothed down her skirt, trying to pretend she hadn’t just fallen into his arms and let him feel her up in the process.  Business, think business.  Her pulse slowed and she willed herself to appear nonchalant.“We met last night, remember?” he pressed. Léopold smiled and ran his hand over the colorful marquetry in rosewood that scrolled through a seventeenth century secretaire.  Interesting that she could deliberately control the flow of her blood.  It further piqued his concern about her species.  What was she?Laryssa’s eyes met his, widening at the confirmation that he knew exactly who she was.“Yes, yes I do.  But I’m afraid I didn’t catch your name.”  Vampire.  Big bad vampire.  Laryssa watched intently as he fingered the furniture, trailing his thumb over the symmetrical scenes as if he was caressing a lover.  “Lovely.”  Léopold flashed his eyes to hers.“What?”  Laryssa realized that he was toying with her, purposefully trying to make her nervous.“I said, it’s lovely.  The neoclassical architectural structures.  The white marble top.  Doré bronze mounts.”“Is there something specific I can help you with?”“You get directly to the point?”  Léopold had intended to play with her a bit, throw her off her game.  Yet his little rabbit wasn’t frozen in the field like he’d anticipated.  No, she rebounded nicely, and now stood confidently like a wildcat, poised to attack. “I don’t really have time to waste.  So yeah, I’d like to know why you followed me from the club.  And I really want to know what you are doing in my shop.” Léopold merely laughed and crossed the room to admire a chair and matching settee. “Circa 1775?”Laryssa walked over and placed her hand on the elegant Louis XVI chair.   “Yes.  How did you know?  It’s a very special piece.  It has the mark of Versailles Palace on it.”“Indeed.”  Léopold sat in the chair, wrapping his fingers around its arms.  “Nothing but the best.  Fit for a king.”“And I suspect you’d like being a king.” She put her hands on her hips, waiting for him to respond.“Ah, a king I never was.  But I’ve dined with kings, and I can assure you that while they enjoy the extravagances of the rich, they often lose their heads.  Easy come, easy go.”“Why are you here?” Laryssa brushed her hair back, attempting to regain her composure. “Are you looking for something specific?”“Oui, pet.  But not an antique.  While I do enjoy shopping, this is hardly the time.”  Léopold lost the smile, allowing his eyes to pierce hers. “So I shall get to the point.  What are you?”Laryssa lost her ability to rein in her pulse and her heart began to fiercely pump hot blood through her veins.  Her lips tightened, and she clenched her jaw.  How dare he ask about her?  What the hell did he want from her anyway? Dear God, she had enough issues with the darkness on her tail and now he was asking about her origins.“What do you mean, ‘what am I?’ I’m the owner of this store.  Does that answer your question?”  Laryssa asked, her voice growing louder.  “Who are you?”
“Léopold Devereoux.  That’s who I am.  I can be your angel or nightmare, depending on the day.  So listen up.  What. Are. You?”  Léopold didn’t make a move.  He sat completely still, anticipating her answer.

Espionage operations and runaway love travel halfway around the globe as Tamara and Lars stay one step ahead of death. Tension heats to boiling, but it’s not half as hot as the attraction licking at their heels.
Book Description:
Tamara MacBride has a much bigger problem than hiding her shifter side from the world. By the skin of her teeth, and with a smattering of Irish luck, she manages to kill her sister’s murderer. Escaping from the scene of the crime is proving much harder than she anticipated. Just when she thinks she might be safe, her cab driver shrieks and slumps over the wheel. She cowers in the back seat, too scared to run, expecting the next bullet will be for her.
An unknown assailant terminates Lars Kinsvogel’s target. Pleased by the outcome, after all dead is dead, Lars exchanges the glitz of Monto Carlo for a nearby airport intent on collecting the private plane he left there. He’s no sooner arrived when a cab jumps the curb. His instincts blare a warning, but Lars ignores them and trots over to investigate. There’s not much he can do for the cabbie, but his passenger is still very much alive—and absolutely stunning. It takes some tall talking, but she agrees to come with him.
Espionage operations and runaway love travel halfway around the globe as Tamara learns to accept her shifter side, and Lars embraces what’s been missing from his long life. Initially reticent to trust one another, it takes a series of crises and a near-fatal accident for them to take a chance on love—and each other.

Excerpt:Lars Kinsvogel sucked in an annoyed breath. Anxiety and greed thickened the air in Monte Carlo’s Place de Casino, and he stifled a choking sound. Damn his hypersensitive shifter senses. If it weren’t for them, the desperation hovering around him wouldn’t be quite so palpable. Casinos were always like this, though, a haven for the rash and reckless. What had likely begun as a harmless pastime turned into hardcore addiction for an unfortunate few, forcing them to return again and again despite diminishing returns.Hope springs eternal. All the poor sods need is one more spin of the wheel, another hand of cards… Lars looked up, right into the croupier’s beady gaze.“Would monsieur like to place a bet?” The croupier grinned with all the warmth of a hammerhead shark, displaying a mouthful of bad teeth. What was it with the French and their aversion to dentistry? Lars shook his head and made shooing motions with one hand. He’d have to either join the baccarat game soon, or move on, but he could get away with loitering for a few more minutes without drawing undue attention to himself. His target, a powerfully built man with Asian features revealing his half-Chinese ancestry, had an arm slung around a striking brunette. Maybe she was one of the hookers who worked the casino circuit, maybe she was a steady thing for the man. Lars considered it and decided she could be both. Around five feet eight, she had a lush, curvy body, hair cut into a stylish bob that fell a few inches past her shoulders, and memorable eyes the color of a restless ocean. A short, black sheath hugged her like a second skin. Open nearly to her waist, it displayed half her full breasts. Even though Lars’ appraisal was surreptitious, he forced his gaze elsewhere. The woman was sex incarnate, and he didn’t need anything diverting him from his objective.Jaret Chen pressed chips into his companion’s hand and urged her to pick a number. He gave one of her breasts a familiar squeeze, which earned him a smile, perfectly rouged lips stretching over impossibly straight teeth—and a slight shake of her head. Color stained her tanned skin. Lars realized he was looking at the woman again, wondering how her breasts would feel beneath his fingers. She seemed uncomfortable with Jaret’s frank exploration of her body, so she probably wasn’t a pro. For some unexplained reason, Lars felt relieved. The woman was too elegant to earn her living lying on her back.He snorted to himself and studied the flashing display above the baccarat table. Maybe the woman wasn’t French. That might explain her perfect teeth—and her discomfort with having her body mauled in public. At least she held Jaret’s attention. So far the drug dealer hadn’t spared him so much as a sidelong glance. Lars had never met the man, but knew a great deal about him from an extensive dossier provided by The Company, Lars’ international security employer. Deeply involved in the heroin trade from the Middle East, across the Mediterranean, and into Europe, Jaret was one of the principals in a large operation—and Lars’ current project. He sized the man up. Maybe six feet, he had a barrel chest. Strongly muscled arms strained against the fabric of his cream-colored silk dress shirt. His art deco tie had been loosened. Dark eyes, pronounced cheekbones, and straight dark hair cut short blended with his business attire. For all intents and purposes, he was indistinguishable from the phalanx of wealthy—and wannabe wealthy—men circulating through the casino. Lars glanced at his own cream-colored silk shirt and black linen pants. With the exception that his tie was still firmly knotted, he and Jaret were dressed as twins.Guess neither of us wanted to stick out in anyone’s memory.Lars glanced at his Rolex. Close to midnight and time to move on. He’d seen enough. Now it was a matter of figuring out where and when to strike. These things always went more smoothly when they were nearly invisible. He melted into the crowd and made his way outside. The casino fronted the French Riviera; Lars stood looking out at the Mediterranean for long moments. The water was quiet tonight, waves barely slapping the white sand beach. His cell phone, set on silent, vibrated against his hip, and he tugged it from a pocket to look at the display.Private. Damn! Could be anyone.Lars punched the answer icon, held the phone to his ear, and waited. No need to say anything until he knew who was on the other end.“Are you somewhere you can talk?” Lars inhaled sharply as Garen LeRochefort’s voice came through the phone’s speaker. Another shifter, Garen had founded The Company hundreds of years ago. The mechanics of the spy game had changed drastically between the late seventeen hundreds and modern times, but the basics—kill or be killed—hadn’t altered much. Everyone who worked for The Company was some type of shifter. Lars’ animal form was a mountain lion, Garen’s a wolf.Lars loped farther down the beach until he cleared several couples engaged in deep, hungry kisses. “What has happened?” Something must have, or Garen wouldn’t have risked contact.“You need to leave.”“But I have not—”“Doesn’t matter,” Garen cut in. “I’ll explain when you’re back in the office on a fully scrambled line.”Lars thought about his twin engine Piper Seneca waiting at the Nice airport, fifteen miles from Monte Carlo. It gave him freedom to come and go, and was much cheaper to operate than the business class jets he also owned. “Maybe I could still—”“No!” The one word thundered so loud, Lars moved the phone away from his ear. “Don’t even go back to your room.” Garen hesitated. “Old friend. Trust me on this.” The line went dead.Lars stared at the iPhone’s display and dropped the cellular device back into his pocket. He’d been compromised. He wasn’t certain quite how, and a part of him was curious as hell. He kept walking, swinging in a wide circle to head back toward the Hotel de Paris. Garen had said not to return to his room, but if he were careful, maybe he could learn something critical that would help their side.“Ja, forewarned is forearmed,” he muttered. Keycard in hand, he let himself into a side door of the rambling old structure, got his bearings, and started cautiously up a stairwell. His suite was on the second floor, at the very end of the wing facing the Mediterranean. He’d always loved the old hotel with its thick, patterned carpets and antique lighting and furnishings. Staying next to the walls, he used a bit of shifter magic to cast a don’t look here spell. It wouldn’t keep someone determined from seeing him, but it didn’t require much magic, either. He entered the second floor a few doors from his own and scanned the empty hallway, his senses on high alert. Midnight was early in Monte Carlo, a city where people frequently stayed up through dawn and slept the day away, so he fully expected to see other guests, but the hall was mercifully empty. He padded silently toward his door and examined it, wishing he’d set a trap. He inhaled, trying to sort scents, but there were too many to make sense of. He could leave, just walk away like Garen had almost ordered him to, but Lars had never been a coward, and he was more intrigued than frightened. He’d spent years worming his way out of dicey situations. This was just one more, and he was damned if he’d walk away from his things. Not unless he had to.He took a deep breath, tugged his guaranteed-not-to-set-off-metal-detectors .32 caliber revolver from its ankle holster, and shoved the key card into the slot in the door. A tiny electric motor hummed and the deadbolt snicked out of the way. He turned the latch, kicked the door open, and turned from side to side scanning the sitting room of his suite, gun at the ready. Lars waited in the doorway, barely breathing, and then he heard a muted click, followed by an unmistakable whirr, and knew.A bomb.He cursed in German, not knowing if he was more annoyed with the turn of events or with himself for not taking Garen’s advice and getting the hell out of there.
