“Coffee?” the young pretty waitress asked,holding a pot of coffee.
“Oh, yes, thank you, Shelby,” Jay saidand she turned his cup over for her to fill.
“Do you want your usual?” Shelby asked,smiling brightly.
“Please,” Jay said, smiling back.
Shelby turned and looked towards Shea, andwithout smiling at her, said, “And you?”
Just coffee please,” Shea said, feelinga little uncomfortable. “Uncle Jeb made me eat a big breakfast before I left.”
“Shelby, you remember my sister, Shea?”Jay said.
“Your sister?” Shelby said, finallylooking at the young woman sitting in the booth across from Jay. “Oh my God!Shea! Honey, I didn’t recognize you. Get up here and give me a hug.” Shea stoodup and hugged her.
“Hi, Shelby,” Shea said. “It’s good tosee you.”
“It’s good to see you. How long are youback for?”
“Till tomorrow. I will be leaving afterthe funeral,” Shea replied.
“Oh, yes, I am so sorry about yourbrother. Everyone loved Donovan,” Shelby said. “He truly was a good man.”
“Thank you,” Shea said, then Jay clearedhis throat intentionally.
“Ok, Mr. Mayor, I hear ya. Let me goand put this order in and I’ll let you guys visit.
We’ll talk later,” Shelby said andwalked away.
“You know, I think she has a crush onyou,” Shea said slyly.
“You think? I hope so since we havebeen dating for the past year,” Jay said, laughing.
“Really!? That’s wonderful. I alwaysliked her,” she said.
“She always liked you too,” Jay said.
“So, do you see this going somewhere? Imean, you’re getting a little long in the tooth, don’t ya think?” she saidjokingly.
“Yeah, maybe,” he said, smiling. Thenhis smile faded. “But we’re not here to talk about my love life. We’re here totalk about your husband and kids.”
“Oh, so your love life is off the tablebut mine is the topic of conversation?” Shea asked sternly, looking at him witha hardened look.
“Don’t look at me like that, Shea. I amjust trying to say that maybe it’s not the best idea for them to come to thefuneral,” he said.
“Why? Because my husband is white andmy kids are mixed?” she asked coldly.
“Yes,” he stated bluntly. He had neverapproved of her marrying a white guy. Daniel was nice enough but he was whiteand Jay could not let that go, especially after who killed their parents andnow who killed Donovan.
“Uh-huh, I see,” she said. “You havehated Daniel since the very first time you saw him.”
“I didn’t hate him, but you have tounderstand how wrong it is,” Jay said, trying to reason with her. It wasdifficult to reason with her when she got mad and, even after all these years,he could tell she was getting angry.
“Oh, you’re so full of shit. I had beendating Daniel for almost a year. I never brought him home because I knew howyou would react to him, and then one day, you and Marcus show up at my schoolunannounced. You yell at me and get in my face because you caught me kissing awhite man, and Marcus gets in Daniel’s face and threatens him. You embarrassedyourself, me, this family, and this whole damn town that day. I never forgaveeither of you for that and I hoped that maybe because of Donovan, we could getpast that and become family again, but I guess not.”
“Well, we wouldn’t have had to come toyour school to find out what or who you were hiding if you would have just toldus,” Jay said. “I still can’t believe you would even consider dating a whiteguy after what happened to Mom and Dad.”
“Told you? Why, so you could come upthere and threaten to kick his ass if he didn’t leave me alone? Oh, wait, youdid that anyways. Besides, what happened to Mom and Dad was an accident. Itcould have been anybody driving that other car drunk, it just happened to be awhite guy. You can’t hold Daniel responsible for that,” Shea said.
“A white guy that got what… two years’probation and a stint in a rehab?” Jay said, getting angry himself now. “Andevery white person is responsible for that.”
“The white guy didn’t pick hispunishment, that was the system and the system is broken. We all know that,”Shea said.
“And who set up the broken system?White guys.”
“And we are trying to fix it. Danieland Donovan were—are—trying to fix and change the system and ya know Donovanliked Daniel and loved those kids. He would want them there, and maybe if yougot over your racist bullshit, you’d see how wonderful they are.” She stood,getting ready to leave.
“It ain’t about that. You know how thistown is and you know what could happen,” he said.
“I know what could happen, huh?” shesaid. “I know what should happen. This town you so dearly love should join therest of us in the 21st motherfucking century. That’s what should fuckinghappen!” Shea said, turning to head for the door.
“Shea!” Jay tried to say.
“Nah, fuck you. You don’t get tothreaten my family and try to justify it,” Shea said. “Fuck you and fuck thistown. This kind of shit is why I stayed away for so long, and after tomorrow, Iain’t never coming back again.” She turned and walked away.
“Shea! Shea!” he called after her asshe left the diner.
“I don’t know what happened, but I ampretty sure you need to apologize,” Shelby said
“Yeah, I know, and I will after she gets back home. Ipromise,” Jay said as he sat back down. Everyone in the diner had stopped towatch them and now they turned their attention back to their food and theirconversations.

Recipe: Spaghetti with Eyeballs
Ingredients:
6 ounces spaghetti noodles (cooked)
24 ounce jar spaghetti sauce (heated)
24 ounces pre-cooked frozen meatballs (heated according to package)
1-2 slices part-skim mozzarella cheese
Sliced black olives (to taste)
Pimento stuffed green olives (to taste)
Instructions:
Cook noodles, sauce, and meatballs according to package directions.
Combine noodles and sauce.
Mix until well combined.
Form "nests" of noodles by twirling noodles in a serving ladle with a fork and then placing in a serving bowl.
After meatballs have cooled slightly, cut out circles of mozzarella cheese and place one circle on each meatball.
Place one black olive slice over the cheese circle.
Gently place meatballs randomly over the spaghetti.
Add green olives over the top, to taste.

Prologue
I have come to the conclusion that there can be meangirls in any species. They are not just amongst the humans. They are not limitedto the teen years, either. Although, they seem to be more prevalentduring that time. What led me to this conclusion was simple experience. You see, I was a victim of mean girls of the worst type starting at arather sensitive age.
The mean girl abuse didn’t start until I was in mymid-teens and my mother moved us from a small West Virginia township with apopulation of twenty-two that was located about two hours from Washington, DCto a community that just managed to qualify as a city with its population oftwenty-five-thousand and ten. It was located just over the Virginia border,which shortened my mother’s drive to her monthly meeting of the witch wannnabesin downtown DC by an hour.
The little township of Bloomsburg, West Virginiaconsisted, mostly, of my blood relatives which were either the Loftus or theO’Shea - all of whom were fascinated with witchcraft. To my knowledge,however, none had been able to truly master it.
The small city of Meddleson, Virginia was void of anyof my kin other than those in my household - my mother, one older half-brother,and one older half-sister - both of whom left for college before we were evensettled in. It did, however, possess a closely knit community of actualpracticing witches. It was my mother’s hope to be able to rub elbows with thesemagic practitioners and finally learn the art. She insisted that witchcraft wasin our blood and it was simply lost to time and oppression. If we could mix andmingle with those who had not lost it, we would surely get it back.
At the time, I had no interest in learning orpracticing magic, nor could I understand why my family felt it was such animportant talent to possess.
My half-siblings’ father died in a car accident whenthey were quite young. He was the love of my mother’s life. No matter what roomin our home that you might venture into, you were sure to find at leastone photo of him.
I never knew my own father. Nor was there aphoto of him for me to see. Whenever I would ask my mother to tell me abouthim, she would insist that he was nothing more than a sperm donor who hadpassed through our little borough in the night and I was to give him no morethought than that.
Although I found it disappointing, it didn’t bother menearly as much as the intense emotion that I would sense pouring from everypore of my mother’s body whenever I brought up the subject of my father. She would visibly tremble with what I had assumed was the desire to seehim dead, or, at the very least, castrated and paraded, naked, through thestreets.
About the Author:
Sitting at her antique rolltop desk in her home in upstate New York, Internationally Published and Award Winning author, Eileen Sheehan, writes steamy romance thrillers for the mature adult with a sexy male and strong female. The majority of her novels are paranormal, but some are just plain novels about people in love. As the years progressed, so did her writing style. Although she still includes romance and has a happily ever after ending, her stories tend to have more mystery, thrills, and horror in them.
She makes it a point to write a novel length that will allow the busy readers to be able to sit down in an evening (no more than two) and be taken on a journey that was created by her active imagination without having a week go by before they gets to the end of the story.
An incurable romantic, she has a love affair with at least one of her characters... one book at a time. She hopes the same thing happens to you.
Eileen started out as a freelance writer for periodical magazines and newspapers. From there, she tried her hand at writing screenplays. Her screenplay, "When East Meets West" was a finalist in the 2001 Independent International Film and Video Festival at Madison Square Gardens, NYC. Finally finding her niche, she lets her imagination loose with paranormal romance/thrillers.

Jessica realizes if her secret gets out, everyone she loves could be in danger of a witch hunt. Wanting a change of pace, Zane moves to Willowbrook. Jessica worries he'll be caught in the devastation of her powers.

Iclenched my jaw in frustration. The front door suddenly flew open as a gust ofwind whipped down the street. “See? I lose control even when I try to keep it.”
“That’sbecause you’re trying too hard,” Donna responded.
Ishook my head. “No, I am following Sofia’s directions, but I can’t keep it inif I feel an intense emotion. Which is apparently all the time lately. Wait.What are your powers?”
Donnagave a slight smile. “I was wondering when you’d ask. I’m not a witch.”
“What?But Sofia—”
Donnainterrupted me. “I know all about the witches and the Circle. My mom was awitch. I do not have any powers, however. None manifested when I turnedthirteen or sixteen, and nothing happened when I was in that boating accident.I am mundane. So not only did your parents love you unconditionally until theydied, but you’re also a successful business owner and a powerful witch. What amI? I’m just a tax accountant. My parents thought nothing I did was good enough,not even when I was named valedictorian. And I do not have magic.”
“But,Donna, we used to be friends. Best friends. What happened?”
Donnashook her head. “It doesn’t matter now. The bottom line is you’re amazing andeverything this town wants, while I’m never good enough for anything. I’m notgood enough to have magic, own a business, or even have a long-termrelationship, let alone get married. Why are you even talking to me about this?Pity? Is that it?” Donna stood, snatching her jacket from the chair. “I don’tneed your pity. I need you to quit acting like you don’t realize how specialyou are and to… to leave me alone!” Donna yelled the last phrase, then stompedout of the coffee shop.
I stared after her, sitting perfectly still andignoring the curious glances of the patrons as they quietly murmured to eachother. The light from the windows dimmed and black clouds started covering thesky. Hard rain pelted the roof, drowning out the sound of conversations.
The lights flickered, eliciting a few gasps from the customers. I tried toreign in the anger, but deep yoga breaths weren’t helping. The longer I thoughtabout what Donna said, the angrier I became. Thunder exploded directly over thebuilding, and the electricity finally gave in to a mightier power. Severalcustomers went to look out the window, apparently gauging their chances atmaking it home in the deluge.
