Guest Blog - Ancient Ties by Marie Johnston

I like strong women. Like many readers, I have a hard time staying with a book if the heroine doesn’t resonate with me. When I set out to write the book before Ancient Ties, I dragged my feet. I had no title, just the heroine and an idea of the hero. I loosely formed the plot and started to write. 

Then I deleted it and hung back to think for a bit. 

Why didn’t I want to write this story? It was about the sister of the very first hero I wrote. She was raised in the human world and estranged from her brother. She was going to get kidnapped by her hero. Or saved. Or kidnapped by someone else, then saved by the hero? 

Ugh. She was so…boring… 

Epiphany. I’m the author. I can make it a story I want to write. 

As soon as that thought crossed my mind, Birthright formed and reigns supreme as my favorite story I’ve written. Maggie Miller was fun to write. She might not know who she really is, much less her birthright, but she knows herself and best of all, she has common sense. Bad things happen and she rolls with it and she refuses to bend into the role the hero insists is hers because she knows she’s not the right person for it.

Then there’s Kaitlyn in Ancient Ties. A police officer for shifters and vampires, she knows how to fight and defend herself. But I felt part of her strength expressed itself in her knowledge that she needed a support network in life. Shifters in my world need a mate or they’ll eventually go crazy. The ones who hang on are often surrounded by loved ones who’ve got their back. Another sign of her strength: knowing she deserved a male who treated her better. She didn’t know the real reason Chayton acted like he did toward her, and despite him being her destined mate, she wasn’t going to beg after a guy who treated her like he did. Maybe it didn’t stop some intimate moments from occurring, but…we’ll call it part of the process…

The Steele City Blues Playlist with Karen Greco

Music distracts me when I am writing, so if I listen to anything while writing, I stick with sweeping film soundtracks (Lord of the Rings is usually a go-to). 

But when I am on the treadmill at the gym, I plug in my headphones and let the music soak into me.

My Review:

I wanted this book as soon as I laid my eyes on it. I had to learn how to draw these fun fairies. Cute and cartoony, adults and children both will love learning how to draw these adorable doodles.

I used to draw a lot when I was younger but my hands are sorely out of practice. This book helped inspire me to try my hand at doodles and drawings again while giving me step by step instructions.


Full of ideas, instructions, challenges and activities- this book is a creative wonderland. It is a great way to get out of your head, do something fun and creative which can help fire up your creative inspiration in other areas.

Share it with your kids, do projects together. Draw a whole bunch of fairies. Most of all- have fun.

It’s Good to be Bad
One of the things writers are often asked is what inspired a particular work. Sometimes it’s a piece of music or a painting or a conversation. I’d like to say my newest endeavor had such lofting beginnings.

However, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t the result of an internal temper tantrum and a conversation with myself.

Let me rewind a bit and try and explain why exactly I was throwing a temper tantrum, albeit a discreet one. I was finishing up either the second or third book in the Lucy trilogy and so finally be forced to face the reality that the series and world I’d invested so much time in and that so many readers love was, in fact, coming to an end. All the stories—with the exception of Barry’s—had been told and attempting to do any more spinoffs would only result in rehashing familiar territory. I respect my readers too much to do that to them, hence the decision to gracefully end the series, hence the temper tantrum.

And then—lightening struck.

Not in real life, thankfully, because that would have been painful and awkward for everyone.
Instead, it was the realization that while I’d fully explored one side of the equation—the angels—I’d barely examined the other side. The demons.

And I had the perfect protagonist all lined up and ready to go.

Readers may—or may not—remember Joanne’s very spoiled, very bratty, very annoying younger sister, Julie. If anyone would be tempted to take a job with the so-called “dark side”, I think we can all agree it would be the woman who would raid her dead sister’s apartment for not only her clothes but her boyfriend.

Julie is not Joanne. Julie is not some lost soul struggling to find her way in the world, just waiting for someone to show her it’s okay to have a little spine. Julie… well, Julie has plenty of spine. And stubbornness. And probably more than her fair share of daring.

Julie is going to do very well at her new job because Julie already knows one of the lessons it took forever for her sister to learn.

Sometimes… it’s good to be bad.
