Interview - Bad Blood by Laurencia Hoffman and Sophie Smith

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
My name is Jolene Poole, but I write as Laurencia Hoffman because that name looks better on a book cover! I've been writing this series with my friend Sophie Smith for about five years now. We both have a love of dark, gritty, violent vampires. I think the main draw to writing in horror is being able to be dark and violent without shocking people by what we come up with. For us, it's freedom.

What inspired you to write this book?
We really go by our muses, so mine was Winona Ryder. I thought about the roles she had played and how none of them were really of her as a heroine, or full of action, so I wanted to create a character who was fierce using her face as my inspiration. That's how Melina Collins was born! I knew my writing partner Sophie Smith from a roleplaying website (that's how all of this started, if you can believe it). One day, I saw that she had created a vampire with the face of Karl Urban as her inspiration. I thought our characters might hit it off, so we threw them together and got a whole series out of it!
Please tell us about your latest release.
Our latest release is the third book in the Wages of Sin series, so I don't want to spoil anything. What I will say is that new storylines and characters are introduced in every book. And with each book, the storyline becomes more complex, as does the lives of our poor characters.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
That's really tough because I love all my characters. But my favorites (so far) are Melina Collins and Izzy Auckley. They are both unique in their own way. They're strong, vulnerable, feisty, and kind. Sophie's favorite character to write is definitely Blake Auckley.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
I absolutely plan everything. I think Sophie does to a point. What we do is cast our characters first, we choose a face for each one before we start writing them. Then the traits of the character come to us based on who we've chosen to portray them. We call it an author-cast...it's like a fan-cast but we're authors. Hehe.
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
Tough without revealing spoilers! I think my favorite scene is one that sticks out in my mind, when Izzy reveals her identity to her father. It's the way she goes about it, so bluntly and with a bit of attitude, yet calmness.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? How do you deal with it?
I always have writer's block. The most I get to is page fifty before it really stops me. From that point on, the book is written at a snail's pace. It takes me years to finish a novel by myself. The only reason Wages of Sin has turned into eleven plus books is because of Sophie Smith. We write well together and find it so much each easier to write with someone else than alone, the passion and inspiration for the story never fades. The only way to deal with writer's block is to push through it, to write around it. Even if I only write a page a day, that would turn into a large book in a year's time. So just keep plugging away at it, and eventually, it will be finished.

Do you write in different genres?
Yes, I do. And I love it!
Do you find it difficult to write in multiple genres?
Actually, no. I go wherever my inspiration takes me. I've written in so many different genres; fantasy, horror, paranormal, thriller, romance, contemporary, and even western. Whatever comes into my head is what ends up on paper, doesn't matter what it is or where it came from. I write whatever inspires me.
When did you consider yourself a writer?
I've always considered myself a writer, but I started taking it more seriously when I was around sixteen and decided that this was what I wanted to do with my life.

Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
I love to sing and listen to music. I also make personal care products. And I'm very lucky to have an occupation that allows me to be creative (I run a flower preservation and design company with my mother). So while I'm working, I can brainstorm storylines, listen to music, and sing all at the same time.
What can readers expect next from you?
While I have several unpublished novels that I hope will see the light of day eventually, Wages of Sin is our main focus. We want to make it as successful as possible before moving on to solo projects.
Where can readers find you on the web?
I can be found on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
Melina knew he wanted to help, but she wondered just how far he was willing to go. If he really wanted to help her, he could kill her. He could end her miserable existence, so she wouldn’t have to be alone and wouldn’t have to live with the guilt. It would eat her alive. It was enough to drive her insane. “Blake...as your maker, I order you to end my life.” Blake's brow furrowed as he stared at her. She scrambled from the floor to kneel at his feet, her fingers clutching at the trim of his coat. “Please don’t say no,” she said. “Just think of it. You’ll never have to see me again!” He didn’t know how to react, never mind what to say to her. What she was requesting of him simply could not be done. In a moment of blind rage, he would have been capable, but Blake had never been one to kill on orders. “Get off me!” he growled as he tugged his coat free from her clutches. “You think dying is the answer? Then do it yourself. Don’t ask it of me.” Growling, he lifted her from the ground and forced her near to him. He thought it was best to be tough with her, considering it was probably the only way to get through to her in this state. “You need to stop this right now, or you’re going to drive yourself mad. And probably me along with you.” “You’re right,” she whispered. “What would he say? He’d be ashamed.” Blake released her from his grip. Approaching the entrance, he mumbled to her, “We have to leave. I can’t bear being in this place any longer. I need some entertainment.” Stepping out into the daylight, he was forced to squint. It was easy for their kind to adjust to the darkness, but not the sunlight. “Come out, Melina. I’m not leaving you here alone,” he called out. She wiped her eyes again and straightened her composure. She was still quite ladylike, and she didn’t want to go out in public looking like a mess. “Fine. Have it your way. You may regret this someday, you know.” Melina stepped out of the crypt, her eyes narrowing as they adjusted to the brightness of the sun.
“There are a lot of things I regret, Melina,” he said. “I don’t mind adding this to the list.”

Excerpt: “Why did you turn me, Melina? Why did you take my life?” “What are you going to do? Kill me? And here I thought we were getting along so well,” she said with a chuckle. Blake considered the idea of destroying her there and then; how satisfying it would have been, even if that feeling would only last a moment. But, realistically, he knew that he would still be left with unanswered questions, and the prospect of Silas hunting him down. It would just prove to be more of a hindrance than anything else. His grip relaxed and then fell from around her throat. “I don’t know why I waste so much energy despising you. Think of what I could accomplish if you didn’t burden my mind.”Clearly angry that he had been aggressive, her slender fingers clutched his neck and threw him to the floor. “You’re stronger than I thought you would be, but do not forget your place. It would not matter if I were merely a year older than you; every year counts. Your elders are stronger than you, even if it’s only by a sliver. If you forget that, you may become vulnerable. And in a fight between you and them, you would lose.”  “You’re attractive when you’re angry,” he said with a smirk. With a roll of her eyes, Melina released him, got back to her feet, and then composed herself. However disrespectful he was toward her, he had asked her a question, and it was only polite for Melina to respond. “I was desperate, lonely, and hungry when I turned you. There was something about your eyes...something that indicated that immortality would suit you.” Her answer was simple. Blake could tell by her answer that she hadn’t put much thought into turning him. “Any other questions?” “Have I become just what you imagined, your perfect progeny?” That, most of all, was what irked him. She had been so thoughtless, so careless with his life. “I’m not sure. I don’t really know you, so I can’t make any assumptions. You could use a lesson in manners, though.”

Excerpt:“You’ve been a naughty girl haven’t you?” A deep voice whispered in my ear. I jumped a foot in the air. I was in the back room digging through stacks of holiday decorations looking for a tree topper. The mall was closed and I thought everyone, other than the guard out front, was gone.I turned around with a frown and found the mall Santa standing there. Great, was the creep plying me with his Christmas shtick because he thought I had a kid or was he trying to hit on me? At least he didn’t reek of alcohol like the last one. I looked him up and down. This guy was young and from what I could tell good looking under the fake beard, white fluffy fur and red velvet. Around six foot two and built solid he wasn’t your typical mall Santa at all. His bright blue eyes twinkled with mischief and full red lips smiled through his fluffy beard.“Buzz off, Santa. I’m not in the mood.” It had been a very long day. Lines of screaming children filled the Christmas Zone. I was in charge of display and marketing. Even though I didn’t have to deal with the little brats I still had to make sure the lines were long and the advertising and décor was working its holiday magic.“But you’re always in the mood, aren’t you Sylvie?” His deep voice caressed me, teasing me.
            I stopped and stared.

Vices and VirtuesAn Anthology of the Seven Deadly Sins and Seven Dark Virtues
Genres: Horror, Supernatural, Paranormal, Sci-Fi, Suspense/Thriller
Taglines: Because sometimes, the virtuous are as frightening as the sinful…
About the Anthology
Sins will weave you into their webs. They become the Vice you’re unable to shake. There are the values, taught from birth, which ride a razor’s edge. They turn into Dark Virtues, a twisted mockery of their true meaning.
Pride, envy, lust, gluttony, anger, greed and sloth all have their place in the tapestry of life. They are the Vices who lost sight of the Virtues: charity, temperance, forgiveness, humility, kindness, chastity and diligence.
Enter the worlds where the tales of the most sinful of Vices and the darkest of Virtues will entice and intrigue you…
…for even among the most devout there is a dark side.

SINS OF THE FLESH (Gluttony)BY STACEY BROADBENT
It was a balmy Spring evening when I first discovered a taste for human flesh. It was a happy accident really. After having my heart broken one too many times, I'd abstained from any type of physical relationship with a man for years, so when one fell in my lap, it came as quite the surprise.

EXCERPT SINS OF THE FLESH:Throwing caution to the wind, I slipped my feet into a pair of runners and walked down the road, telling myself it was to clear my mind. But really, I was on the prowl for fresh meat. Someone vulnerable—easy prey. I had to be smart about it; it was broad daylight after all.Every person who walked past became a possible target. In my mind’s eye, I pictured a computer log for each one, listing their attributes. Having limited knowledge on the ins and outs of cannibalism, I had no idea what the perfect body type was for consumption. Would it matter if they were male or female? Was it better if they were lean and muscular, or was a layer of padding more flavourful? How was I to choose?Turns out, I didn’t need to think about it at all. On my walk back home, I was knocked off my feet by a man out for a jog. He’d been too busy flicking through the playlist on his phone to see me, and by the time we’d both looked up, it was too late. We collided, my forehead into his chin and mouth. My hands automatically went up, pressing against his chest and sending us both bouncing off each other, landing on our behinds. Apologising profusely, he offered me his hand and pulled me to my feet. The impact had left a red egg on my head and skinned my palms raw. He, however, came across a little worse for wear, sporting a newly chipped tooth, and fat, bleeding lip. As soon as I got a whiff of the blood on his breath, I knew, he was the one.I pointed to my house across the street, inviting him in to clean up while he called the emergency dentist. It was the least I could do.Ushering him into the bathroom, I had him perch on the edge of the bath while I rummaged through the cabinet for the first aid kit. I needed to knock him out somehow. There was no way I could do this without it… unless…

A MILLION CLAY WOLVES (Greed)BY AMBER K. BRYANT
Living in a squalid encampment in the shadows of a towering city, a young woman able to endow objects with magical powers struggles with her brother's growing determination to use her gift for his own selfish means.
EXCEPRT A MILLION CLAY WOLVES :“Do you remember Jamey? Has a tattoo of a whale on his right arm, wears a red and white striped tank top—Sound familiar?”Mora nodded. “He juggled knives and guns.”“That’s right. Jamey is my boyfriend and we’re very happy, only… He has this crazy idea that he should give up the troop, join the army instead. He thinks it would provide a better life for us, but he’s wrong. This is the only life I want and I don’t want it to change. I need you to change his mind.”“What?” She took a step away from Dare. “I… I can’t do that!”“You don’t realize it, but you can. I saw it in you. The ability to endow magic. You just needed a jumpstart, and yesterday…” she pointed to the feather, “I gave it to you.”Mora stared at the feather, still crumpled in her hand.“Tell the feather that Jamey’s place is with me. In the troop. Tell the feather it needs to change Jamey’s mind. Go on.”Mora lifted the feather halfway to her face, then paused. This would never work. Clearly circus life had taken its toll on Dare’s mental health. Or perhaps unstable people were attracted to the quirky life the troop seemed to lead. It was silly to give in to Dare’s demands. Then again, if she didn’t do it, perhaps Dare would become so angry, she’d bust out of her purple corset and become a rage-fueled She-Hulk. Perhaps the simplest way out of this situation was to tell the feather to become a mind-changer and then get the hell out of there.“Fine, whatever.” She brought the feather to her lips and blew words into it. “Change Jamey’s mind. Make him stay. Oh!” She jumped as a tingling sensation moved through her body, from the soles of her feet up her legs and spine, then out to the tips of her fingers and into the feather. “What… what just happened.”Dare’s face went back to its friendly older sister mode. “Exactly what I thought would. Thank you, Mora.” She took the feather back from Mora and pinned it into her dark, shimmering hair. “Wiser people than me would tell you to be careful with this gift of yours. Magic can be used for good or for evil. It doesn’t care which, most of the time.”Confused, Mora toyed with a stray thread from the hem of her t-shirt. “But you’re… not telling me to be careful?”Dare grasped Mora’s chin and tilted it so their eyes met. “We don’t find out what we’re capable of through advice.” She gave Mora’s face a tiny squeeze and then let her go. “Trial and error, darlin’."

DO NO HARM (Charity)BY J.M. BUTLER
What if someone offered you exactly what you needed?
Ethics and vampirism hardly go together, and Aestan has concluded he is trapped between two bad situations. A chance meeting with his neighbor Summer changes everything as she offers the solution to his problems. He can have her blood. She's more than happy to give it if it keeps him from robbing blood banks or killing people. Though at first he is relieved, he soon realizes that even what is freely given may yet have consequences he does not desire.
EXCERPT DO NO HARM:"Summer...I can't take your blood." "Yes, you can. And if I were a stranger, you would. But we're friends." "Friends?" Aestan couldn't suppress the sharp laugh. She had an oddly vague definition of friendship. Surely this was a joke. Summer finished the prep and took a deep breath."Yes, of course we are. Now...don't attack me or anything, okay?" She stuck the needle into her arm and balled her hand up before flexing her fingers and clenching again. "I can't let you have the blood we collected for the drive, but I can let you have some of mine. And then you know...we can start looking for some substitutes." Words failed Aestan as he watched. A tantalizing scent rose from the glass, thick, slightly metallic. How could she be serious? Was he dreaming?

A SINGLE MIND (Pride)BY ALANA DELACROIX
Neil Clarins is a very important man with very important research.  He could save the world.  And he won't let anyone stand in his way.
EXCERPT A SINGLE MIND:Neil straightens his back and keeps his hand away from his pocket. He’s right. His work is good and more than that, it’s needed. The entire world is about to go up in flames. The environment is a mess. People are fucking dying and what he has in his lab will save them. No way he’s going to let some petty bureaucrat like Mike Bell get in his way. And if using his own brain as a testing ground is the way it has to be done, so be it. Knowing he’ll be out for at least a day, Neil puts messages on all his corporate tethers: email, messenger. I’m sick, it says. Sorry, back soon. He goes to his room and shaves off a small patch of hair. Underneath, the skin that’s never seen the sun is a sickly white-green. He swabs his temple with a topical anesthetic and sits on the bed for a long time, staring at the syringe with its small bolt gun mechanism, so like the one used to kill cattle. He has no idea if he’ll be able to walk after the injection and he doesn’t want to pass out in the bathroom. Too much risk of injury. Neil takes a deep breath, then another. He thinks of the other scientific greats. Salk and the polio vaccine. Newton digging around his own eyeball with a bodkin. HELL'S MATCH (Kindness)BY ARIA PEYTON
In my world, too many people are lonely. So out of the kindness of my heart I help them. Those who want someone by their side forever get it. Only they never read the fine print and forever means just that.
EXCERPT HELL’S MATCH:In a sinuous motion, Cheshire slides off the machine and backs away, book held out in front of her in a warding-off gesture. Anger fuels her when she speaks. “Am I being set up? Did you follow me here? What’s going on?” I know better than to move, so I stay put, my body jerking with the motion of the tub beneath me. “No, of course—” The rest of the sentence dies at her raised brow and sceptical glare. “Yes. I followed you here.” I act all resigned to this fact but surge on when she tries to interrupt. “But only because Grandmother asked me to make contact with you, and when I got to your apartment, you were already on your way here. I was so intrigued by how you rebuffed her on the phone last night, I had to meet you myself.” I may have just painted myself into a corner here as I watch the thoughts swirling in her head. I’ve given her too many inconsistencies to process and I know she’ll have a question for each one. But I already have the answer, and realistically, so does she. “How did she know where I live? How the hell did she know what I look like? And how the fuck did you think this would look, stalking me into the damn laundromat?!” Her voice gets louder and squeakier with each word until others here start backing away. Soon the place is empty and Cheshire is alone here with me. The predator within can’t believe its luck, while the other side of me is fascinated that she didn’t run with everyone else. “You spoke to her last night. What did she know about you then, huh?” The glare eases a little, but she still keeps her distance. “Too much is what she knows. I’d love to know what little tricks she has up her frock sleeves to know so much without a word.” “It’s just her ability. Some would call her clairvoyant or psychic.” “Or just plain freaky,” she mutters under her breath. “Or that.” I release a chuckle to lessen the tension hovering between us. Even though it’s refreshing to have a normal conversation with someone, the urgency to get her back to the office of ‘Madame’ still hangs over me. She’s the next match to be made and that contract needs to be signed.

About Aria Peyton:

EVELYNBY QT RUBY
Dr. Evers says the only way for Evelyn to be free is to remember her past, but is that really such a good idea?
EXCERPT EVELYN:“Why am I restrained? There is no escape from this room.” Dr. Evers releases a little sigh. “For my protection.” “Against?” “You.” “Me? What could I do to you?” She waits to respond. I’m unsure if it’s because I have to remember like she said before, or she’s just a withholding bitch. “You will remember. So . . . please, continue.” I sigh and growl a little. “My family . . . they loved me.” Dr. Evers writes down my words. “But they were afraid of me.” “How do you know?” “Because . . .” I pause to remember, to allow memories to solidify, sharpen. “Because I used to harm things.”

EXCERPT A SORCERER'S ROAD TO TEMPERANCE :Her reaction to him was…extreme, unexpected and intense…and she wondered in what other subtle ways Tempest would affect her. It almost felt like a spell, and somewhat forbidden, but it also felt…good, too. Fangs for the Holidays : A Vehicle City Vampires Short Story by Roxanne Rhoads

A Sleigh Ride HomeBy Roxanne Rhoads
The moonlight glittered off the freshly fallen snow. It was like taking a sleigh ride through a forest of crystals. Everything sparkled, glimmered and shimmered. It was truly beautiful. Caleb was really trying so hard to give me the “good, old fashioned Christmas” experience that I had always dreamed of; complete with a one horse open sleigh, fresh falling snow, and a thermos full of hot cocoa. The blanket started to slip off my lap so I tugged it up to make sure it didn’t fall to the floor of the sleigh.Caleb glanced my way, “Are you cold Maggie?”How could I be cold with Caleb, the man of my dreams and fantasies sitting beside me? I had wanted this man since high school, when he was the popular, hot guy that was so nice to everyone. Including a skinny, scrawny girl with braces and glasses. Me. “No, I’m actually quite warm. The night doesn’t feel that cold and between my thick leggings, sweater, wrap and the blanket I am toasty warm.”“Good, I didn’t want you to get cold. After living in Texas for the past couple years I bet you aren’t used to the cold, Michigan winters anymore. I was afraid you’d be freezing by now.”Caleb was always so wonderful. He was the kind of guy that was always concerned about people. We had been pretty good friends. He was so sweet he even took me to our senior prom seven years ago. I was sure he’d just done it to be nice because he felt sorry for me since no one else had asked me to be their date. Now I wasn’t so sure that he had taken me to the prom just to be nice. Maybe he had real feelings for me. The kind of feelings I have for him. This was only the second time I had seen him since I left to go to college in Texas right after graduation but I had never stopped thinking about him. It seemed that he never stopped thinking about me either. He sent me letters, cards and emails from time to time always asking when I was coming home. This was the first year I had replied telling him that I’d be home for Christmas. Usually my mom flew out to Texas to spend the holidays with me there. This year though my mother had finally met someone special and she wanted to spend the holidays with him…and me. Honestly I was glad. I had really begun to miss Michigan lately, especially at Christmas. There was nothing like a snow covered Christmas.“No matter how long I stay in Texas I’ll always be a cold blooded Michigan girl.”His smile twinkled as bright as the snow, “Glad to hear that.”“You know Caleb this was awfully nice of you to invite me on this sleigh ride. The drive through town seeing all the Christmas displays and lights was fun and then here, in the woods…it is so still, so quiet and so utterly beautiful. It is a dream come true.”“Maggie, I remembered that last Christmas we spent together before graduation and how you would always talk about wanting an old fashioned Christmas with sleigh rides and hot cocoa and even ice skating. I have always wanted to give that to you. I’ve had old Drew here,” he motioned to the horse, “and this sleigh for five years now hoping you’d come home for the holidays so I could give you the Christmas sleigh ride you’ve always dreamed of.”“Really? Caleb, I had no idea. But why?” “Why? Maggie isn’t it obvious? I love you; I’ve been in love with you since middle school. I’ve tried to put you out of my head, I’ve tried dating other people but it’s you. You are the one that’s always had that special place in my heart.”My eyes welled up with tears as his words rang true. My heart swelled telling me I felt the same way. All this time I hadn’t let myself believe in my feelings because I feared rejection.Caleb pulled the sleigh off the trail and into a small clearing.“Maggie would you consider coming home?”“Caleb, I am home,” I said as I threw my arms around his neck.“Really? To stay? With me?” he mumbled into my neck.“Yes, with you, for as long as you’ll have me,” I cried.“I hope forever isn’t too long for you,” Caleb said with a smile as he pulled away from my tear soaked embrace to look into my eyes.“Forever sounds just about right.”

Holy Crap! The World is Ending! by Anna-Marie Abell

Holy Crap! The World is Ending! How a Trip to the Bookstore Led to Sex with an Alien and the Destruction of Earth The Anunnaki ChroniclesBook OneAnna-Marie Abell
Genre: Humorous Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Alien Abduction Press
Date of Publication: September 21, 2017
ISBN: 978-1-947119-01-7ASIN: B071Z7YTW7

Book Description:
The president has announced that Earth is going to collide with a rogue moon, and in the process, our entire planet is going to be smashed to bits. As one would expect, upon hearing this news, humans went ballistic. It was as if every sports team in the world lost their championship game at the same time. No car was left unrolled—but oddly enough, Taco Bell remained open and made unfathomable profits in the last days. Apparently, Doritos Locos® Tacos were a popular last meal.
Autumn (who for the purpose of this retelling asked to be portrayed as drool-inducing hot with kick-ass ninja skills) has just been handed the task of saving all of humanity. With the help of her unbelievably sexy alien boyfriend and her kleptomaniac friend with fire-retardant hair, Autumn takes a spaceship and races to save her fellow humans by using the Ark of the Covenant. Along the way, she discovers how sheltered people are from the truth of extraterrestrials and their power to either protect us or destroy us.
Stupid government.
Grab a bottle of wine, a shipload of snacks, and prepare to take a ride on this humorous chick lit romantic sci-fi paranormal adventure. If you’re into Ancient Aliens, conspiracy theories, UFOs, crave a little sexy time in your reading, are curious if we were genetically engineered (like the Sumerian cuneiform texts claim), and are dying to find out the meaning of life, then this book is for you.

"This book starts with a lot of humour, but quickly gets a very rich storyline with great characters and seriously... this ending? If you like to be blown away, you should read this!" - Esther, BiteIntoBooks
"Anna-Marie Abell has succeeded in weaving her years of study into in the ancient Sumerian culture and their gods with common conspiracy theories, pop culture and random human quirkiness into an out of this world end times romp that will have you laughing out loud at the most inappropriate times and possibly even shedding a tear or two before it's all said and done." - Jennifer, JennlyReads

Excerpt 1
What if...Ever since I was a kid I’ve been fascinated by the unimaginable. I used to gaze at the night sky and contemplate a series of what ifs. But I’m not talking about the boring typical what ifs such as:What if I won the lotto? What if I quit my job and moved to Tanzania?I’m talking about those outlandish ones:What if I ran across a herd of three-inch pigmy cows capable of producing solid gold milk, but each ounce I extracted took a month off my life? Would I still do it?What if we could suddenly have intellectual conversations with all animals? Would we continue to eat them? What if the whole world went blind and deaf all at the same time? Would we survive as a species?Another favorite childhood pastime of mine was observing ants clambering atop one another to locate food or gather leaves, like inhabitants of a metropolis bustling to work. Ants are innately oblivious to the threat of a gargantuan foot looming over them. I’ve often wondered if humans would behave the same way if the tables were turned. What if a jumbo foot came down on us and squashed a city block on a regular basis? After a while, would we just shrug it off and alter course to go around it like ants do?Some people go out of their way to squish any and all bugs that come across their path. Not me. I have a strict “no kill” policy with every type of animal. Well, that’s not entirely true. I have an exception for animals I buy in a grocery store. I know: this is incredibly hypocritical. But dammit, I love me some cow. Perhaps I should define my “no kill” policy as “not slaying a creature simply because it annoys you—or simply because you can.”For example, I can’t help but wonder:
What if I were reincarnated as a fly in my next life? Would I appreciate getting stuck on a glue trap? Put yourself in the fly’s place. You’re ambling along, minding your own business, when out of nowhere the glorious aroma of In-N-Out Burger wafts in your direction. Those freshly cooked fries and juicy burgers fill your senses with food ecstasy. Just when you can’t take it anymore, a sign pops up out of thin air that reads: All You Can Eat! Free In-N-Out Burgers All Day.Salivating, you charge toward the smell all excited. Then—BAM!—you step onto a glue pad, unable to break free. Not only are you doomed to a lengthy, torturous death of dehydration and starvation, but your last days are filled with the constant aroma of those heavenly cheeseburgers you can never have. Not the way I’d want to kick the bucket, that’s for sure.My fixation over these what ifs is why I was so into UFOs, ancient aliens, near-death experiences, ghosts, and really, anything paranormal. Truth be told, I’m not sure if deep down I believed in all these things, or if I just wanted them to be real, so I’d have something to hope for beyond the monotony of human life. I mean, think about it. What would be more entertaining: cleaning a toilet, or cleaning a toilet haunted by a ghost? (Well, a friendly one. It might get messy if your bowl were possessed by a demon.) Phantom commodes win hands down.I’ll never forget the day this whole obsession got started. When I was six, I asked my mom what life was going to be like when I grew up. She was always one for blunt honesty, and she said, “Well, you’ll go to school for a really long time, marry a guy who will lose all his hair, get a job you’ll probably hate, have kids, get old, poop your pants, and then die.” I broke down in tears. My mom ended up regretting having told me all that, because at the age of seven, I convinced myself that those things wouldn’t happen to me, and that it was my destiny to one day rescue the planet. I am talking about a Will Smith in Independence Day style rescue (except I imagined myself with a breadstick in my mouth instead of a cigar). In one childhood fantasy, I used a butter knife and my badass Barbie Mobile to defend the residents of my neighborhood from a rampaging, genetically mutated, alien-giraffe hybrid that had escaped from a secret government lab. (Kids, if you ever want your mom to get fired as the president of the PTA so she doesn’t embarrass you in front of your class, simply splatter your shirt with ketchup and burst into the annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon with a spork screaming about man-eating giraffes. Trust me, it works like a charm.)This desire to be the hero had me hooked on stories where people discover they’re part of an amazing new reality—a world where the impossible becomes possible. If I waited long enough, I thought, maybe Hagrid and his flying motorcycle would come crashing into my bathroom as I sat on the toilet and proclaim, “You’re a wizard, Autumn!”But it's one thing to dream it, and an entirely different thing to live it. Had I been smart and heeded the advice of the Pussycat Dolls when they warned us to “Be careful what you wish for, ’cause you just might get it,” then maybe things would have played out differently.I wished it.I got it.
And now I’m about to die.

About the Author:
Anna-Marie Abell grew up in a trailer park. Well, several actually. Her trailer was on wheels so she got to experience the Pacific Northwest’s vast array of mobile home parks as her parents moved her from one to the other. Somewhere along the way, she got totally into UFOs. Probably because she was hoping extraterrestrials would come and abduct her. But they never did. Luckily for her she was smart, because her only hope of escaping trailer life was college and a full scholarship. Moving to sunny California on her almost full ride to Chapman University, she was well on her way to her new life. Two bachelor degrees later (Film and Television Production and Media Performance), and several honors and awards for her accomplishments, she managed to start working in an almost completely unrelated industry from her majors: infomercials.
It was in college that she got bit by the “ancient alien” bug after listening to Zecharia Sitchin on Coast to Coast AM. In her pursuit to uncover the truth, she has spent the last twenty years researching the ancient Sumerian culture—in particular their “gods” called the Anunnaki—and their connection to the creation of the human race. What she found changed her life, her beliefs, and her understanding of the universe and everything beyond. Her humorous science fiction trilogy, The Anunnaki Chronicles, is a culmination of all her research, her borderline obsession for all things paranormal, and approximately 2,300 bottles of wine.
