Teaser Excerpt:
"We won't hurt you if you cooperate." The silver dagger hovered above my bare arm, and I screamed when I thought it was going to touch my skin. Unfortunately, the myth about silver and vampires is true. It'll burn our flesh, and whatever it touches heals slowly.Aiden questioned to the woman, "Iona?"She looked troubled, but nodded her head, "we need more information. It's either her or us." Then she looked at me and asked, "don't you care that Chronos is killing off rival clans? We just want to be left alone, but we need an antidote."

The Weird and Wonderful: Fantasy Settings in the Real World with Beth Woodward

The Weird and Wonderful: Fantasy Settings in the Real World
Hello, my name is Beth, and I’m a Weirdness Seeker. Oh, it’s not an official term (yet). But I’m sure I can’t be the only one who loves to pick up their copy of Atlas Obscura and find those off-the-beaten-path places that the normal tourist guides might not take you to. I think it has something to do with being both a reader and a writer of fantasy. When we think of “fantasy places,” we think of Narnia and Middle Earth and Westeros. But luckily for us, there are a whole host of weird and wonderful places right here in the real world.
Without further ado, here are a few of my personal favorites:

1) The Capuchin Crypt in Rome, Italy
This place is not for the faint of heart…or the weak of stomach. Back in 1631, the Capuchin friars moved to Santa Maria della Concezione. The pope’s brother ordered them to bring the remains of the deceased friars with them. Rather than just seal them up like most people would, the monks decided to use their dead brethren as…decoration. What came out of that was a crypt with six rooms—with such lovely names as “Crypt of the Skulls” and “Crypt of the Pelvises—and dioramas made entirely of bones and mummified bodies.
I would love to use this as a setting in a book. But I don’t think I could do it justice.

2) Holt Cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans has no shortage of weird places, but this is the one that really affected me. If you Google “Holt Cemetery,” the intrawebs will tell you that it’s a potter’s field. But that belies how wonderful and sad it really is.
When we think of New Orleans’ cemeteries, we think of the above-ground crypts we always see in movies and on television. But those crypts are incredibly expensive. So New Orleans’ less advantaged population comes to places like Holt Cemetery, where you can bury someone on the cheap—if you’re willing to bring your own shovel. The cemetery is overgrown, the walkways are cracked, and the markers are made of anything anyone can find—wood, concrete blocks, even street signs. The cemetery floods all the time, and it’s not uncommon to find bone fragments that have been pushed up to the surface and scattered. But I’ll never forget the image of a tattered teddy bear, half-buried and covered in mud, sitting next to one of those makeshift graves. Holt Cemetery showcases the enormous disparity between the haves and the have-nots in New Orleans that persists even after death, but it also shows that love doesn’t require money.

3) Madrid Atocha Train Station in Madrid, Spain
A train station usually isn’t high on your list of places to visit when you’re in Spain, but Madrid’s Atocha Train Station is home to a botanical garden and hundreds of live turtles. Apparently, most of them are former pets, dumped there by travelers who did not want to pay the tariffs associated with transporting the animals into different countries or people who grew tired of taking care of their pets. There’s even a sign warning people that it is a crime to abandon animals there.
But Atocha Station’s famous turtles may not be there much longer. According to this, they’re being moved to a bigger habitat, and the botanical garden is being paved over. Kind of a bummer, but since the turtles were beginning to cannibalize each other due to overcrowding, probably a necessary evil. (The article is dated January 2018. I can tell you that the turtles were still there in March when I went.)

4) South of the Border in Dillon, South Carolina
Anyone who’s traveled on I-95 in the Carolinas should recognize this, if only from the numerous billboards advertising this kitschy attraction. Located at exit 1A on the South Carolina side of the North/South Carolina border (South of the Border, get it?), this kitschy attraction is a monument to an era past, when families traveled in their Studebakers along the new Eisenhower highway system and a sombrero-wearing, mustached mascot named “Pedro” wasn’t seen as uncomfortably racist.
The amusement park doesn’t run anymore. The motel looks like it’s seen better days. And the restaurants…well, I’m not sure I’d actually eat in any of the restaurants. But stopping at South of the Border feels like taking a time machine into the past, and all the best and worst that comes along with it.

5) Flooded Venice in Venice, Italy
Venice floods. A lot. This should come as no surprise to anyone who has even the slightest inkling of the geography. (It’s an island, with a lot of canals running through it.) When I visited Venice, it flooded. But what really surprised me was just how blasé everyone was about it. I think of flooding as being a big crisis, worthy of summoning the National Guard and FEMA. Not so much in Venice.
As water accumulated in San Marco Piazza, city workers assembled catwalks to allow you to walk over the water and the locals pulled on plastic knee-high boots and went about their evening like nothing was happening. That night, there was over a foot of water in the city center, but you would have never known it. Water rushed in to shops and restaurants and apartments, and the locals mopped it out without so much as blinking. And the next morning, it was gone. The sun came out, and the workers disassembled the catwalks and put them away…until the next flood.

Bonus—Old City Hall Subway Station in New York, New York
Spent any amount of time riding the New York City subways and you’ll realize that there are a lot of stations underground that are no longer being used, frozen in time at the moment they were closed. The best of these is the old City Hall Subway Station. Back in 1904 when the system first opened, the City Hall Station was its crown jewel. But the longer trains that were rolled out in the 40s could no longer stop at the station’s curved platform, and it became obsolete.
You can still see it in all its glory if you ride the 6 train downtown to the Brooklyn Bridge and stay on the train as it loops around to come back uptown. And you’ll see it all: intricate tilework, curving archways, and a chandelier that looks like it came right out of Phantom of the Opera.
When I was revising The Demon Within, my editor said I needed to pick some settings that were more exciting and unique than a high-rise in midtown Manhattan. So I used this station for an epic fight between my protagonist and the angels who are trying to kill her. It remains one of my favorite scenes in the series.

Excerpt:
He wore a gray suit with a dark shirt and a blue tie that fit him so perfectly I knew it must have been custom made for him. His dark blond hair had been combed and gelled into submission. Normally, it stood up in random spikes around his head—not as a stylistic choice, but because he had the tendency to run his fingers through it nervously until it went in about 14 different directions. Until that moment, I hadn’t been convinced he’d survived the fall off the roof of Amara’s estate. Every night in my dreams, I stared at his broken body, tears running down my face. I wasn’t sure why I cried: because I had killed him, or because he had destroyed me.But here was John, very much alive, looking like the fantasy of some billionaire boss about to have hot monkey sex with his secretary on the desk. He didn’t look like the John I remembered, who’d spent most of our time together wearing blood-covered t-shirts. Which one was the real John, I wondered, the suave businessman or the urban warrior? And then I noticed the pin on his lapel: a flaming angel that matched the ones on the others’ pendants. John had declared his allegiance, and it wasn’t to me.“My apologies for the mess,” he said. “Ephraim, Leah, please clean that up. Make sure you dispose of the body well. I don’t want him coming back to haunt us one of these days.” A man and a woman jumped out of their seats and scooped up the body, leaving just a puddle of blood behind. Guess they’d be getting that later.John turned to the rest of the group. “Let’s not forget why we’re here. This illness is already devastating our community, and it’s getting worse. The Zeta Coalition created it with the intent of wiping out supernaturals—angels and demons. And if we can’t cooperate, they will succeed.”“She’s the daughter of our worst enemy!” someone shouted.“Amara is dead. And Dale is not Amara.” He paused. “Covington is right. We need more information if we’re going to survive this, and Dale is our best hope of gaining access to their records containment facility.”“What about taking an army and storming the compound, like we talked about a few weeks ago?” someone asked. To my surprise, it was Tina who answered. “The compound is too heavily fortified, and its underground architecture would make it difficult to strong-arm. We’ve run the scenario many times, accounting for the different variables. The most likely outcome is that we’d end up trapped down there while the Zetas pick us off.”“There must be another way,” a woman said.“Maybe, but this is the best way,” John replied. “We all know Dale can do things that no one else can. Her return may have been a coincidence, but we should use that to our advantage.”
“I haven’t agreed to anything yet,” I managed to get out through gritted teeth.

Beth Woodward has always had a love for the dark, the mysterious, and all things macabre. She blames her mother for this one: while other kids were watching cartoons, Beth and her mother were watching Unsolved Mysteries together every week. She was doomed from the beginning. At 12, she discovered the wonders of science fiction and fantasy when she read A Wrinkle in Time, which remains the most influential book of her life. Growing up, she was Meg Murray with a dash of Oscar the Grouch. She’s been writing fiction since she was six years old; as a cantankerous kid whose family moved often, the fictional characters she created became her friends. As an adult, she’s slightly more well adjusted, but she still withdraws into her head more often than is probably healthy.
When she’s not writing, Beth volunteers at her local animal shelter, attends as many sci-fi/fantasy conventions as she can, and travels as much as time and money will allow. She lives in the Washington, DC, area with her husband and their three cats.

Interview with Dr Nat Tanoh Author of The Day of the Orphan

1. When did you first move to England and what were the circumstances of your move from Ghana?
I first came to England on 22 July, 1964 at the age of three. Ghana was the first Sub-Saharan African country to attain independence from the British. After a few years the government in power declared a one-party state with a President for life thrown into the undemocratic mix. My father, who was politically very active, was part of the opposition to the creation of a dictatorship via the instrumentality of a single-party state. Government then proceeded to arrest and detain vocal opposition luminaries under the Preventive Detention Act (PDA) which provided for detention without trial for up to 10 years. Word came from friendly quarters within the regime that it was very necessary to flee as our family had been directly targeted and that was how we ended up in London.
2. When did you first start writing and what inspired you to keep writing?
I started writing last year. I wrote a lengthy WhatsApp message to a cousin of mine describing a particular incident. She replied saying she found the message quite gripping and thought I ought to try my hand at writing. Work was slow at the time so I said, 'Why not give it a go' and I did. And once I started, it all began pouring out. And the more I wrote, the more I felt the inspiration to share the stories that I had in me. My sister, who is an avid reader, then read the first few chapters and gave me an encouraging thumbs-up. I have been writing ever since.
3. The Day of the Orphan is a fictional, contemporary novel set in Africa, how much of the vivid descriptions and situations included within the book, are based on your own experiences and time in Africa?
Indeed a source of inspiration for writing 'The Day Of The Orphan' was the thought to share a few coming of age experiences I had together with those of friends, family and colleagues and weave these into an exciting fictional collage with contemporary relevance. Thus, it is true that I personally experienced some of the things I wrote or variations of it. As examples, both my father and elder brother were at various times arrested and detained for opposition to military dictatorship. As a student leader I was also once very badly beaten up by government agents posing as students. On student demonstrations we were sometimes assaulted with police batons and also with thick leather belts by horse-mounted policemen. And the police always arrived with guns. But such is not at all the current situation in Ghana. Sadly enough, the same cannot be said for the citizens of other African countries experiencing stark state oppression.
4. What do you love most about Ghana – and perhaps miss the most when you’re away?
What I love most about Ghana is the vibrancy and friendliness of its people. It’s a vibrancy based on an endless optimism that, come what may, things will always get better. Ghana is also a very colourful place with a colourful people who have an ingrained ability to view adversity and hardship with some sense of equanimity as they dip into their endless reserves of optimism to carry on. As a consequence of such positive forbearance, many tend to have an engaging and positive sense of humour. These, among other things, such as friends and family, I certainly miss when I am away.
5. How important are days such as National Africa Day and why?
Africa Day is important because it represents an enduring triumph over Africa’s turbulent history of Slavery and the Colonialism that followed. The day is a beacon for African people staking their claim as equals of all the peoples of the world. It represents in the truest sense of equality that the continent and her peoples have much to contribute, to share and to teach all who aspire to realise the best for our human collective and our shared homestead and heritage. It is also a recognition of the fact that the human and developmental progress that we seek will undoubtedly be substantially advanced through the transcendent attainment of African unity. It is therefore also a clarion call to continue with the far-from-finished mission of attaining a world of peace, love, solidarity and sharing.
6. Political instability, democracy and bureaucracy, violence and aggression, societal challenges such as poverty, homelessness – these are issues that impact both the UK and Ghana – albeit it can be in different ways. Why did you choose to write a book that tackles these issues head on?
As the question itself suggests - these issues are of contemporary relevance. These are issues that matter and ought to be recognised as such with the ultimate aim of addressing them. I believe Contemporary Literary Fiction is an excellent medium for such recognition to be gained even if through the instrumentality of a pleasing novel. There is indeed much to be said for gaining knowledge through entertainment such as the reading of exciting novels. I learnt about the historical Irish Question through the Leon Uris novel, ‘Trinity.’ I also learnt about traditional Japanese culture from reading James Clavell’s ‘Shōgun.’ In terms of contemporary relevance, connections can be made with many hot spots in Africa such as Zimbabwe, the Congo, Togo, Ethiopia, Burundi and other areas around the world such as the persecution of the Muslim Rohingya in Myanmar.
7. The protagonist in The Day of the Orphan is a teenage boy…why did you choose him? How much of your teenage-self did you pack into the character?
In truth I chose to use teenage representation as the main protagonist for two main reasons. Firstly, teenagers are in the true bloom of youth. They are at that spectacular coming of age period. In a sense they are at a crossroads. That is when they are best poised to liberate the better angels within themselves. Saga and Zara in my novel were decidedly privileged. Zara's family was actually stratospheric within the highest echelons of wealth and power. And yet they both chose not to simply relax, wallow and remain ensconced in their privileged existence. Rather, they stood up and worked against what that kind of inimical stratospheric power represented. My second reason was because of some of the experiences I went through as a teenager with many of my contemporary teenage compatriots. In our own manner we protested against military dictatorship and some of us got into serious trouble for our efforts.
8. Who do you hope will read your book and what feelings/thoughts/emotions do you hope it leaves them with once they’ve finished reading?
I wish for adults, young adults, lovers of contemporary fiction in general and fans of African fiction to read my novel. I would like for my readers to become more aware of what transpires in many parts of Africa and elsewhere in the world regarding the righteous struggles of adults and young adults to better their lives through standing up for what is right. I would like my readers to feel hopeful in the belief that with focus and dedication, and with the conscious liberation of the better angels within ourselves, there's a lot that can be achieved even in the face of harrowing adversity.
9. If you could change anything about what you’ve done in your life, what would it be and how would you change it?
Though I am reasonably well educated I wish I could have paid more attention in school. I wish I had been more focused. I believe there was I lot I missed out on in terms of my own potential development by initially having a very cavalier attitude towards education as a teenager. For example, I could have been multilingual and could have also garnered a lot more knowledge than I possess now. Such knowledge would certainly come in handy with my efforts to reach out and inspire through writing. But I guess it's never too late to learn as life itself is indeed a learning curve. Thus we soldier on.
10. You don’t have to be African, or even have visited Africa, to be swept away and transported to the country through your beautiful writing…how easy was it to recall and recreate Africa through your writing? Would you consider writing a book set in England?
Thank you for describing my writing as beautiful. I am both humbled and gratified by such an appellation. Truthfully, it was not too difficult due to the fact I am blessed with quite a good memory. In addition to this, old friends, former school mates and family members often tend to indulge in reminiscences whenever they come together and that helps to reinforce the memories one might have. Contemporary occurrences also tend to reinforce such memories. I was, for example, quite astounded when the prescription I devised in the novel for Saga and others to be rid of tyranny was almost exactly what happened in Zimbabwe last year to restore democracy. It literally happened just as I had written, prior to its actual occurrence in real life.
11. What are you currently working on?
I am currently working on a Science Fiction / Fantasy novel in which the world, or what remains of it after a nuclear holocaust, is given a chance to create a new world order devoid of the gravest mistakes of Erstwhile Earth. In honour of the #MeToo movement, my superhero and leading protagonists are mainly female, representing the principles of creation, life and its everlasting continuity. Thus, we have a predominantly female leadership ruling significant parts of the New World and calling the shots in an effort to establish a blissful, egalitarian and happy commonwealth. But will they find it easy or must they struggle heroically against dark and uniquely sinister forces, who seek to restore what was essentially the dehumanised old world order of unbridled greed, terror, domination and war? We remain to see what happens. Hopefully, we will know before autumn.
12. If you could give just one piece of advice to teenagers who want to make a difference today, what would it be?
My advice would be for them to find a way to liberate the better angels I speak of within themselves. This, I believe, can, to some extent, be achieved by being sensitive to what goes on around you in your own environment and having a healthy interest in current affairs. Ultimately, it is more of selflessness and less of the prevalent culture of personal 'instant gratification' that can help achieve the aforementioned liberation of said angels. Once these good angels are out and about the place - love for yourself, love for your neighbour, love for your environment, love for people and love for humanity - could very well prevail for the realisation of transformative triumphs towards a better world for us all.
Thank you

Book Description:
Like many eighteen-year-old boys, Saga’s prime concerns are: listening to music his mum calls “hop-hip”, learning about girls from his suave best mate Ibrahim, and making sure his considerable tummy is well-fed. In his affluent, liberal and relatively protected suburb life is pretty good, especially when his mum’s special peanut soup is on the table.
However, in Africa, childhoods can be snatched in an instant, especially when you live in a dictatorship. When his friends and family are dragged into the conflict, he is given no choice. Chubby Saga becomes an unlikely revolutionary, but these are very dangerous times. Their violent President Brewman has built their country on fear and even he, himself, is terrified. Spies, traps and double-dealings lie everywhere. Can one happy-go-lucky schoolboy really stand up to a murderous regime? How long can he stay one step ahead of the Zombie soldiers that will do anything to stop him?
This thought-provoking coming of age story touches on many of Africa’s biggest problems today.

Excerpt:
After the quasi-formal welcome, the headmaster and form master hastily stood aside, moving backwards towards the blackboard so the Deputy Minister could take over by posing his questions directly to the students as part of his verification process. The bodyguards also placed themselves at the two front corners of the classroom behind the Minister, and commenced an inexplicable process of touching their earpieces with equally inexplicable regularity. Mr Com, who now had the floor, asked if anyone would volunteer to go first, and a still very annoyed Saga impulsively raised his hand before any of the others could. The New Patriotism issue was indeed a very sore point with Saga. He was still plagued with guilt that he had not been present to defend his bosom friend, Ibrahim, when he was beaten up badly by New Patriotism fanatics who happened to be students in their own school. Subconsciously, it was as though he thus felt the urge to be the one to face any New Patriotism ‘onslaught’ from officialdom within their school. As to how he would deflect such an onslaught, he had absolutely no idea. It was a subconsciously inspired impulsiveness so he simply had to wing it.‘Well, well – I see we have an eager beaver in our midst,’ he smiled at Saga, who did not return the smile. The headmaster, and the form master, and all the five men and one woman who made up the Minister’s entourage, however, giggled rather obsequiously at this sally. They truly understood the meaning of grovelling to those on high. The Deputy Minister turned and rewarded them all with an openly condescending smile.‘Okay mister serious young man, let’s start. So, tell me, who is your mother under our New Patriotism?’ Mr Com boomed out his question. Saga knew the answer he was to give and did so correctly. ‘My mother is the Great South Party of President Brewman!’Mr Com was pleased. ‘Not bad, not bad,’ he said, and nodded happily towards the headmaster, who gave an equally satisfied beam in response.‘And who is your father?’ Mr Com boomed yet again. Saga again answered correctly. ‘My father is the Great Leader of our nation, His Supreme Excellency and President-For-Life-Until-Further-Notice Field Marshal Brewman.’Both Messrs Com and Money now beamed in unison. The entourage and form master were not far behind in this beaming effort.‘Well done my boy, well done.’ Mr Com smiled a vastly complacent smile at Saga. ‘Tell me, my bright, young friend – so what would you like to be when you grow up?’This was far from being a question about future careers such as wanting to be a doctor or lawyer or pilot. Saga knew he should answer something along the lines of wanting to grow up to be a dedicated follower of the President or the Party. However, Saga inhaled and dropped his bombshell. ‘I would like to be an ORPHAN when I grow up,’ he said with utmost seriousness.

Dr Nat Tanoh comes from Ghana but grew up in exile, as a child, in England due to his parents’ opposition to the installation of a one-party state. Today he divides his time between England (London) and Ghana. He has a rich history of involvement in student and workers movements, which originally emerged from struggles against the institutionalisation of military rule in Ghana. Dr Nat has since worked as a consultant on development projects in Ghana and elsewhere in Africa. He also continues to uphold a passion for democratic social development.
The Day of the Orphan is Dr Nat Tanoh’s debut novel.
