Lana is a writer and she wants to work undisturbed on her new novel. The only problem is that Lana is suffering from a bad case of writer’s block. She can’t think of what to write. A knock on the door interrupts Lana’s inability to write. Answering, she discovers the mailman with two boxes, one with holes in it. What she finds inside is a surprise from her aunt; a parrot by the name of Darwin. Not only does Darwin wear special reading glasses, but Darwin can also read and, as the story continues, we find out that he can tell a pretty good story, too. So Darwin and Lana team up to write a great story about Darwin the reading parrot. The result is a very popular book that takes Lana and Darwin into classrooms to share their story and hopefully, in the process, encourage young people to read and to write.
Author Mary Sage Nguyen, who has always wanted to be an author with a parrot, is now an author like Lana, inspired by a parrot, though this one is in her imagination. The Reading Parrot Named Darwin is a sweet picture book story that will give young readers a few chuckles and inspire them not only to read, but also to write their own stories. As Lana and Darwin bond in friendship and creativity, the two teach each other the strength of working together as a team. They also help each other realize their dreams and goals and to really believe in themselves – important concepts for young readers.

Excerpt:
From the moonlit window, she could tell the closet door was open. Rion’s heart slammed in her chest as she noted the empty bed. “Beckett,” she gasped. Hisses and grunts were coming from the dark closet but that was the only sound in the entire house. Every sound was blocked by the blood rushing in her ears and the struggle coming from the closet. She stepped into the doorway and the breath was stolen from her lungs. “Beckett!” she snapped. The little girl was holding Link—the cat’s back to her chest—as she struggled to wrap long piece of cloth—a robe belt, Rion realized—around his neck. The other end was tied to the clothes rack. Link was struggling to claw or bite his way free. “Let go of him!” Rion snapped.Beckett turned towards her and Rion froze again. The smile on the kid’s face was eerie enough, but something was wrong with her eyes. They were on fire with hate…and something else. Glee, Rion realized. The kid’s entire face was twisted into pure evil glee. It was as unnerving, as if a doll had come to life. Becket snarled and Rion could feel every hair on her body stand on end. Finding her voice, she dropped to her knees and growled. “I said, let him go.”Finally, Beckett dropped the struggling cat and it bolted from the room. Fear and anger surged through Rion and seemed to push her out of her body. Everything was too much, too fast. She watched as she reached out and gripped Beckett by the shoulders. “What is wrong with you?” she roared through clenched teeth. She shook the girl’s shoulders, once, twice, three times. And on the third shake, reason returned. She needed to get the girl out of her hands or she would do something worse. Her arms felt like iron and her fingers claws, but she regained enough sense to push the girl away. Beckett stumbled backwards and landed in a pile of dirty clothes.Rion stared at her in shock, the rage melting as she sucked in a heavy breath. What have I done? She waited for Beck to start crying. Screaming. Anything. Instead, the kid laughed. It was a guttural chuckle in a little girl’s voice. She struggled to right herself and Rion was reminded of the eighties horror movie about a killer doll. Beckett didn’t move like a kid. She moved with a horrific calm and purpose. Rion couldn’t move, or speak, she was stunned. By her own behavior and at Beckett’s. Once the kid was sitting up, she crossed her legs and stared at the floor. And didn’t make a sound. As the seconds ticked by, everything grew still again. She let out a gush of air and flopped back onto her heels. She felt empty. Beckett had needed her and her response was to shake her. Beckett might not have even been awake. “Fuck,” she whispered. But what about her eyes? I’ve never seen someone look so cold and brutal before. Even the foster father who whipped her with a belt for forgetting to clean the bathroom didn’t look like he enjoyed it as much as Beckett did when trying to kill Link. Rion almost laughed at herself. Clearly, she had imagined it. She was in a panic and it is almost pitch black in here. A kid isn’t capable of that kind of villainy? Right? “Beckett?” The kid didn’t respond. “Beckett?” Rion tried again. “Let’s go back to bed.”She reached out to lift the kid off the floor, but as soon as she touched her the stillness exploded. Beckett began screaming and flailing. It wasn’t a scream of fear. It was rage. The kid’s teeth were bared and her eyes were burning again. White fire scorched her neck as Beckett tried to claw her face. Rion jerked her head back in time and the tiny, razor-like nails missed their target but got her throat instead. She tried to restrain the kid, but, even though she was small, she was strong. And she had the advantage of surprise.“Beckett!” Rion cried, wrestling with teeth, arms, fingernails, feet and legs all at once. Stars burst in her eyes when Beckett’s head slammed into her nose. Her vision took a second to return and by the time it did, Beckett had scrambled away into the corner of the closet. Rion touched her nose, expecting her fingers to come away covered in blood. But, they were clean. Her eyes watered, but she didn’t think her nose was broken. She watched Beckett for a moment. Can a night terror cause this? Wouldn’t she wake up by now? Rion had no idea—so she gave up. She knew fighting with the kid would only cause more damage. “Beckett…I’m…I’m just going to let you stay in here. I’m—I’m sorry. OK?”
Rion backed out of the closet. That was so fucked up. She sat on the edge of the bed and rested her head in her hands. When Chambers finds out about this I’ll be lucky not to be in jail. But, would Beckett even remember this? Rion’s skin crawled. She felt like a monster. She had physically attacked a kid she was supposed to be caring for. But, a reasonable voice in her head began, the kid attacked a cat. And she attacked you. Rion knew that was shitty semantics, but she found some comfort in it anyway.

Book Description:
A hero cursed by the gods…
Once one of the greatest heroes Ancient Greece had ever known, Argos is a far cry from the immortal warrior he used to be. After five hundred years of captivity, he is finally free—but a curse from a goddess has left him woefully mortal. In order to become a hero again, he’ll need the help of the gods and the seductive nymph who saved his life.
The only woman who can help him…
Claire Winters is definitely not a nymph, despite the assumptions of the half-naked man whose life she saved . Taking care of a delusional man while a storm rages is not what she planned – especially not as she gets ready to open her dream restaurant. She doesn’t have time for the tall tales of her handsome rescue. Yet, here she is.
When it turns out Argos’s claims are real, Claire finds herself thrown deep into a hidden and ancient world. Now, the two strangers must rely on each other to survive. Together they will face the gods, and the fiery attraction between them, as they work to reunite Argos with his ancient powers.
Will strength and wit be enough to protect them? Or will love prove to be the most powerful weapon of all?
HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO is the first novel in the ORDER OF OLYMPUS series. A sexy, action-packed romance series based on Greek Mythology and set in the modern world.
Ancient heroes never looked this good.

Excerpt 2: (No Steam) Her eyes closed at the thought. The boat’s flooring warmed her summer-touched skin, and she hummed happily. The little things, Claire reminded herself. Life is about the little things.A harsh scraping noise suddenly echoed through the boat, and Claire jumped to attention. She’d been around boats long enough to know that noise.Sebastian had hit something.Carefully she took in the water around her. She was anchored at least a couple miles south of her home at Edgewater. Nearly half a mile of water lay between her and the edge of Kent Island. No one was around.Another harsh noise interrupted her observations, kicking Claire to her feet to investigate Sebastian’s sides. A look portside yielded nothing. She turned to peek over the starboard railing and froze. A small worn rowboat bumped anxiously against the side again. The structure was unlike anything she had ever seen before. The elegantly curved bow was made from a rich wood she didn’t recognize. She didn’t pay the strange boat much attention after that. Her eyes focused instead on the body taking up its entire length. Muscular limbs stretched and dangled from one end to the other. It was a man, no doubt about that. Claire tried not to dwell on the scrap of cloth hanging around his waist and instead zoomed in on the rise and fall of his chest. From where she peeked down at him, he looked as if he was taking a late-afternoon nap.“Hello,” she called. “Are you alright down there?”No response, but he was breathing. That was a relief. His brazened skin looked dry, almost leathery, and his short, rapid breathing didn’t bode well for his overall health. A silver flask was clutched between his fingers, clearly empty from the precarious way it was held. The man had been out in the sun for far too long. Summers on the Chesapeake Bay could be humid, and any amount of time without proper hydration was dangerous. The scruff along his chin and the length of his hair suggested only one thing—a castaway. Who knew how long he’d been floating in the waters with no help or food? That was a strange thought. The Bay wasn’t that big, and they were far enough north that someone should have spotted his boat. Concern overrode logic for now. The man needed help, and there would be time for questions later. She threw a rope ladder over the railing and prepared to board the small vessel.Years of living in the city and the warnings of a paranoid mother urged her to stay cautious. As she grabbed two water bottles from her cooler, Claire also picked up the small pocketknife she had stashed under the steering wheel before tucking it into the back pocket of her khakis. She had never used the knife for anything but cutting rope and peeling the occasional apple. She hoped that didn’t change today, but just in case she reminded herself: stick him with the pointy end.Poking her head back over the railing, the man was still where she’d left him, unmoving. The waves brushed the small rustic rowboat against her own. There was no choice. She scaled down the rope ladder and struggled to place her feet somewhere that wasn’t already taken up by bulging muscles. She wrapped the chain around the bow, successfully connecting the two boats and ensuring that the rowboat wouldn’t be wandering anywhere. Then she concentrated on the stranger. Getting him up the ladder and into shade was an impossible task on her own.“Hey, wake up.” She brushed her fingertips along the closest part of his body, his bare legs. Her touch started as a gentle poke before shifting into a firm shake when he didn’t respond. Worry clawed up her throat at the idea that he might be seriously injured. She needed to get him awake and get water in him.But the small boat barely had enough room for the two of them. Claire planted her feet on one side of him, but the waves threatened to send her into the water. Clenching her teeth, she searched for an alternative way to aid the man that didn’t have her fumbling over his naked body. There was only one option.“I’m sorry,” she whispered, gently straddling his upper body. His breathing didn’t waver under her weight. For a moment, Claire just took in the stranger. Besides the loincloth, the only thing on his body was a web of scars decorating his skin. One danced up his left pectoral muscle and over his shoulder; another sliced across his waist. Others were nothing more than light lines across his dark skin. A necklace made from braided thread with a dull gold coin settled along his collarbone. At least if he had any weapons on his person, he wouldn’t be able to hide them. What are you talking about? said an awed voice in the back of her mind. Do you see his arms? If those guns aren’t weapons, I don’t know what is. About the Author:

Love And The Undead by E.B. Black #99centsale

The Top Eight Greatest Fictional Zombie Characters
I love zombie stories. I recently finished writing a reverse harem zombie apocalypse romance novel where all the main characters battle zombies.
In some stories though, the zombies aren’t just mindless monsters, they are deep and interesting characters. Here are the top eight greatest zombie characters of all time (written in no particular order):
1. Liv Moore from “iZombie”
A zombie who helps fight crimes by eating brains. It’s always entertaining finding out what weird personality quirks she is going to develop each episode as she takes on another dead human’s personality traits. It often leads to disastrous or hilarious results.
2. Frankenstein’s Monster from “Frankenstein”
Yes, I am aware that Frankenstein is the scientist and not the monster. Thank you very much.
Mary Shelley was writing about zombies before there was a word for them. She invented the science fiction genre. Reading about the monster’s journey as he tries to find his place in the world is one of the saddest and deepest things I’ve ever read.
3. R from “Warm Bodies”
I will probably never write a romance novel where a zombie is one of the main characters because zombies don’t usually make me swoon. R is the exception. He’s sweet, lovable, funny, and endearing. I read “Warm Bodies” in a day. Reading a book from his perspective was refreshing and wonderful.
4. Randall Skeffington from “Ugly Americans”
One of the most entertaining television shows I’ve ever seen. I was sad it was canceled after just one season.
5. Sheila Hammond from “Santa Clarita Diet”
She kind of scares me, but that’s what makes her interesting.
6. Angel Crawford from “Even White Trash Zombies Get The Blues”
Angel had a bad life and has been through a lot. Becoming a zombie changes everything for her.
She’s a really well developed and interesting character that you can’t help but root for. You want her to triumph over all her struggles.
7. Ghoulia Yelps from “Monster High”
Yep. I’ve enjoyed watching some Monster High stuff and even have collected some of the dolls.
I think it’s interesting that they took a zombie who speaks in only moans and made her into the nerdy, smart character. It’s all about how appearances can be deceiving.
8. Zombie Hulk from “Ultimate Fantastic Four”
If you haven’t read these comic books, you need to. Reed Richards accidentally stumbles upon an alternate universe where all the superheroes have been turned into zombies. If you think normal Hulk is terrifying, imagine Zombie Hulk. He has the strength and rage of normal hulk, but with an incurable craving for human flesh.
What other characters do you think should be on this list?

Excerpt:
“Let me see.” Derrick had gathered some supplies from Jed, who still carried my backpack. There were unused rags leftover from Nick’s gunshot wound and a sewing kit in his hands. The doctor had gotten down on one knee, set his supplies aside, and was staring at my injured hand. His jaw and fists were clenched. I could see on his face that he was holding a part of himself back as he drew near me.I rolled my eyes. “I’m fine. I’m sure you have more important things to do. My wounds aren’t deep.”The muscles in his forearm tightened at my words. His voice sounded strained. “That’s for me to decide.” He grabbed my hand and turned it over impatiently before dropping it. “Flex your fingers.”I did so easily. He nodded his head. “Good. The cuts don’t appear to be deep enough to have done damage to your nerves. I don’t think you need stitches.”I raised one eyebrow. “Told you I’m fine.”“But that doesn’t mean you don’t need my help.” His dark gaze met mine as his voice grew hoarse. I could hear whatever he was holding back coming through. “You’re making a big mess with all this blood. Have I told you how much I hate messes?”“You didn’t have to, I could tell.”My words were nonchalant, but my heart was pounding loudly in my ears as he licked his lips. He looked ready to either throw me off the edge of this barn for offending him with my uncleanliness or like he was the real zombie here and ready to eat me...“We need to clean you before I bandage you up.” He lifted one of my hands towards his face. “It stopped raining and we don’t have any water to spare, so I’ve been left with no choice. It’s not the most sanitary option, but...”He parted his full, sexy lips and popped one of my fingers into his wet mouth. I wanted to protest, but I was paralyzed. He sucked the blood off like some kind of ravenous vampire. I gasped in surprise, feeling weak in the knees. His mouth was so soft, warm, gentle, and slow. He sucked on each of my fingers in turn until I shut my eyes, ready to give myself over to him.He moaned as he continued to suck and I couldn’t help imagining that mouth exploring other places. We would-“Stop!”The moment was interrupted as Nick grabbed him by the shoulder and yanked him up and off of me. Nick punched him in the stomach. Derrick grunted and hunched over, almost collapsing to his knees again.“I told you to keep your hands off of her,” Nick growled the words. “If you touch her again, I’ll hurtle you off this roof and let the zombies take care of you for me.”
