The Orchid Lei
She carries Hawaii with her
In a secret purse
Decorated with flowers
And filled with magic.
That bag is within reach at all times
For her to open
And capture some island wonder
To add to her day.
It could be a rolling wave
Locked in her memory
From when she was a kid
Building castles on the beach.
Or perhaps it's a sunny ray
That comes to her mind
While she sits in a long meeting
And dreams of her family and home.
How unique it must be
To have that gift
And be able to transform any situation
Into instant paradise.
On my first date with her
I hope she shows me a glimpse of that magic
So I can see the lei she creates
When looking at the orchid in her hands.

Taos
Pines fill the horizon
On a mountain
Cut with valleys of white
Beneath this ocean sky
My son straightens
His tiny skis between mine
Pure, icy air greets us
As we glide down
Our first run together
It doesn't last long
Snowplowing hand in hand
Down this bunny hill
But in the Land of Enchantment
We've completed a circle
Thirty years in the making
For my dad was once guiding me
On a day that carved my future
For many seasons to follow
I miss my father
I'm proud of my son
I'm overjoyed to be here
Pines fill the horizon
On a mountain
Cut with valleys of white

3 Lines for a Lost Ship
The moon winks off the ocean's dark face
While the stars stare from their billion mile homes
And the torn sail flaps over sailors a dozen

Names in the Sand
When you jump that ocean
Conquering 10,000 miles to unite our hearts
We shall find a place where the page meets the edge of the Pacific
And invites us to leave the shortest of notes
The page is not limited by space
For there is room to write a thousand books
If we were to follow the coast
From head to toe
Our only restriction is time
The waves acting as the ticks of Earth's clock
Spilling ashore every minute
Erasing the letters we've drawn at our feet
So we must move without hesitation
In the grain of a moment we've been given
Finding our place
Etching our mark
And after we are done
Take my hand and do not watch
As the waves reach forward
To do time's work

Our Future (In Numbers)
Look to the near future and see our multiplication problem
It isn't hard
If you still don't see it, look in the past and it will become clearer
1 billion to 2 billion
2 billion to 4 billion
It isn't a numerical issue previous generations had to deal with, and perhaps that isn't fair
But they had different challenges, so casting stones isn't wise or useful
We simply have to address that this equation cannot continue
That 1 home has only so much room
And 7 billion, as I currently write this poem, is already a tight fit
Don't believe me?
Just ask the others we've shown out the door of our house
They cannot speak for themselves,
but their decreasing numbers shout loud enough to be heard (especially the zeros)

Flight
I see past these walls
To the blue that awaits my imagination
Somewhere in the clouds I shall roll
My ears filled with white cotton
My feet dangling down at the town I had escaped
I have but one lingering question:
Won't you join me?

Finding Love
Find love
Even if you think you've found it
Or lost it
Crushed it
Buried it
Had it squeezed from your spirit
Like an orange depleted of its center
Know that it always exists
A substance more common than sand
More necessary than air
And the only thing that is born, grows, and becomes immortal
Even if you think you've found it
Or lost it
Crushed it
Buried it
Had it squeezed from your spirit
Like an orange depleted of its center
Know that it always exists
A substance more common than sand
More necessary than air

Spark in the Night
Know that you can achieve great things.
From the stars you were born--a billion years in the making--to the stars you shall return.
So this is the blink of your extraordinary existence.
So shine and soar like a spark in the night.

So this is the blink of your extraordinary existence.
So shine and soar like a spark in the night.
