The Truth about Cotrill and Bercegeay, Revealed at Last
For years now, the Internet has wondered about the real story behind Charissa "Char" Cotrill and Erica "Irk" Bercegeay, the enigmatic writing team behind that Internet sensation, The Peacock King. Who are they? Are the rumors true? We've all heard them:
They're simply two women who've been friends, collaborators and sometimes roommates for years now.
Irk is really a man.
Irk is really a man and Char is his wife.
Irk is really a woman and she's gay-married to Char.
The End...?
And now...a very special episode of Scryer's Gulch:
As Annabelle tied her bonnet laces, Lily hung around the front of the school room after class, beaming, hands clasped behind her back to contain her excitement. The other students filed out, the boys eager, but restraining themselves from shoving their female peers out of the way.
"Well now, Miss Lily," Annabelle said, and Lily giggled at the formality, "are you ready to visit your big brother's establishment?" Mr Bonham had elected to accept Annabelle's offer of refinement, doubtless in his continued misguided attempt to seduce her. Annabelle restrained her nose from twitching at the unpleasant thought.

Chapter 9 Part 4 | Lovers and Beloveds | IHGK Book One
Emmae woke slowly. Through the fog of sleep came a beloved, angular face; desire rushed through her, edged in an ominous way. She reached out her hand. "Warin?"
"Not quite," said the face. "Hildin." He seized her hand in a hard grip.
The drowsy fog cleared away; she sat up, and pushed herself to the top of the bed. Stone covered in tapestries replaced the daub walls of the cottage; feathers filled the mattress she sat on, not reeds; and a fire in a generous hearth warmed the room. Her clothes hung in rags from her arms. She pulled them close with her free hand against her chilled skin. "Where am I? Take me home! I want to go home, take me home right now!"

Chapter 9 Part 3 | Lovers and Beloveds | IHGK Book One
Once back in his study, Temmin ran his fingers over the old red book. It had been almost a week since he'd been inside its covers, and though he recalled the story perfectly well, its immediacy had faded somewhat--until the image of Prince Hildin's knife slicing through the girl's clothes, her nakedness among the rags, came to mind. It shot a thrill straight down his center, but whether it belonged to Hildin's henchman Gian, or himself, he couldn't tell. If the latter, what did it say about him? Troubling.

Chapter 9 Part 2 | Lovers and Beloveds | IHGK Book One
No one bought Temmin's story about Fen meeting him to spar in the woods, though no one contradicted him, least of all Jenks; he only lifted a skeptical eyebrow and said, "Why would you take a junior footman as a sparring partner, sir?"
"We're the same height," Temmin answered. "Fen's a good man. Besides, he's Ar--Dannikson's sweetheart, and I like her."
"Bare knuckle champ of Templestone. Hmf. Do you know how big Templestone is? I hope you haven't made a mistake, sir. You've singled out the girl, and now you've singled out her sweetheart."
"I'm not the one meddling with the servants, Elly is!" Temmin said to himself as he stalked off to the morning room and a reckoning with his second sister.

Chapter 9 Part 1 | Lovers and Beloveds | IHGK Book One
Temmin set out on his early morning ride the next day with thoughts of Allis. He saw the multitudes of green in her eyes everywhere: pale, tender new leaves; ferns lacy and bright; the deep moss blanketing the tree trunks. Nothing held him back now but his father, who could only disapprove, not stop him. He said the nobility would be angry. Why would that matter? Who could stand against the royal family? And why should he care about what his father feared? The King didn't care about anything other than molding his son into a copy of himself.
He rode through the King's Woods, already knowing it by rote and absorbed in his thoughts, when he noticed a movement up ahead, not far from where he'd found Arta crying. Had she returned, or was it a deer hiding in the underbrush? As he drew nearer, the figure moved toward him, not away from him; it was no deer, but a man.
