Chapter 16 Part 4 | Lovers and Beloveds | IHGK Book 1

Steel glinted against Arta's throat, and in Temmin's imagination red bloomed against the white of her skin. But here and now, the steel wavered ever so slightly. He cast about for anything he could draw upon for guidance. He thought of Jenks: "Who are you more afraid of? The Gods, or your father?" Now that he feared for two innocents, not for himself, he wasn't sure.

"Son in Sorrow" First Draft: Done. I Think.

Site News

I powered through the last few scenes of book two, rearranged a bit, and now have a completed draft. I'm going to let it sit for a bit--hey, at least until tomorrow morning--then bung it onto my Kindle and take notes. It reads totally different on a Kindle, you guys. Then when I've worked through those notes I'll send it off to Nettah the Editah. I'm also in touch with ace cover artist Alice Fox about getting some quick concept art so you can see what the cover's going to look like.

So...

Chapter 16 Part 3 | Lovers and Beloveds | IHGK Book 1

Freshly bathed, Temmin pulled on his new Temple garb--red, the color of the postulant Lovers, a happier, somehow less serious shade than the official Tremontine red garb he wore the last time he was at the Temple. "Will I see the Holy Ones again before tomorrow?" he asked over a late supper with Anda in the Supplicants Chamber.

She put her wine glass down and replied, "No. You won't be seeing them until it's time to draw down the Gods tomorrow night. It's not at all an easy thing, you know, Tem."

"Allis says it's something like being a puppet."

Chapter 16 Part 2 | Lovers and Beloveds | IHGK Book 1

The urgent conversation appeared to be one-sided from a distance, but on closer inspection, both parties were fully involved, a small pulse in the King's jaw the only sign of increasing tension. "Master yourself, Corland. What do you mean, Temmin's lovers are a sham?" said Harsin, keeping the smile on his face.

"I mean, he's pulled the wool over your eyes!" hissed Corland. "He still qualifies! Your son means to take Supplicancy!"

Book 2 Update: A title and more

Site News

Hey guys, I haven't done one of these in a while so I thought I'd give you an idea what's up. First off: We have a final title for book two. It's "Son in Sorrow," which is a line from Temmin's birth prophecy. The story-in-story is called "The Bastard Heir," and it's one that you've never read before--it's entirely brand new.

I'm not done with the first draft, which I wanted to have done months ago. I'm beginning to feel all George R.R. Martin up in here. I will say that I have the ending mostly written. It was in the middle of the book. I had to move it out to the end and then I had this big gap and and and...anyway, the great part is I've been filling the gap and today I finally hit the already-written part. I still have more to go, but it's coming together well.

Book two presales are still going on. Three packages: $25 ebook and manuscript; $50 ebook, paperback and manuscript; $70 ebook, paperback set of both books and manuscript. You've got a couple more months at least, but sooner would be better. Laughing out loud

Chapter 16 Part 1 | Lovers and Beloveds | IHGK Book 1

The Keep's servants slept little the week before Neya's Day. All the rooms, even the bedrooms in the Old Residence Wing, were turned out and prepared for guests who might or might not be staying. As they did at the turning of every spoke, the maids received new pinafores, and the footmen new shirtfronts. The maids beat every carpet, brushed every curtain and tapestry; the footmen, under Affton's hypercritical eye, polished every piece of silver, every candlestick, every brass doorknob, grand entrance and mudroom alike, even though their sheen already blinded the onlooker.

Before/Afters at The Blurb Doctor Is In

Adventures in Self-Publishing

I've been busy between bouts of writing book two on writing blurbs for other indie writers over at The Blurb Doctor Is In. Bunches of before/afters there if you're interested in seeing my work for others, and if you're an indie--either ebooks or serialized work--it's only $25 to get my help with your blurb.

Orycon!

Adventures in Self-Publishing

Hey, everybody! I will be at Orycon Friday, 11/11/11 (IT'S BINARY, CHARLIE BROWN!!) through Sunday 11/13/11.

I'll be co-hosting and possibly reading at the Broad Universe Rapid Fire Reading 11 am on Sunday in the Grant Room along with a TON of other great writers like M.K. Hobson. "Possibly reading" because I'm an organizer and we're jam-packed with female writerly goodness this time, and they come first. If I do get a chance to read it'll be the super-short "Non Si Muove."

If you spot me in the halls, I command you to say hi! Laughing out loud

Chapter 15 Part 14 | Lovers and Beloveds | IHGK Book 1

All through breakfast, Temmin wondered about his behavior. It was a silent, musing meal in which the twins respected his mood; indeed, it didn't even seem to surprise them. He wondered all through his leave-taking with the Most Highs and the Holy Ones, his enjoyment of the goodbye kisses muted and absent-minded. He wondered as he climbed gingerly onto Jebby's back, trying to form the questions as well as the answers.

Why had he submitted to Issak--how had Issak persuaded him, when after Emmae's experience had consumed him, he'd sworn it would never happen to him, ever, assuming it would ever come up, which it wouldn't. She'd been humiliated, shamed, used, and didn't that come with it? But with Issak, he'd felt nothing but trust. Had he told Issak to stop, Issak would have stopped. He'd told Issak not to stop. He'd gone to the Temple simply for Allis. The spiritual trappings were confusing, and possibly useful; he wanted to gain the kind of control over himself and his world that Issak seemed to have. Now, he wondered if there were more to it than even that.

Two stories from the childhood of Temmin, Sedra and Ellika, both set on Harla's Night, the Tremontine Halloween.

"The Fisherman's Teeth": A Kellish ghost story as told by Nurse. A young wife will not let the spirit of her dead husband go, with disastrous results.

"Harla's Night": Ten-year-old Temmin and his best friend Alvo make a mess of the spirit lantern contest and their own friendship in the process. A good explanation of Harla's Night traditions.

Both stories are rated G. (I know, right?)
