The Elmer’s Glue for Better Organizational Development

It takes work to gain clarity by communicating and over-communicating to get alignment. In my 30 years of work in the art and science of natural behavioral assessment, it’s a distinct characteristic that clarity doesn’t come naturally for many leaders not to mention the variety of behavioral profile types on your team that hear and process information differently.

Here’s a gold nugget that also connects us back to communications. But this time, the bottom line is more about listening:

Knowledge is powerful.Knowledge shared is more powerful.Knowledge from the people in the company who touch it every day is the most powerful of all.

Strategic listening is not a natural, common practice among busy senior leaders because it requires time and patience and a positive belief in the power and capacity of others. And like all the other great leadership attributes, it also requires the rare leadership combination of confidence and humility that few of us naturally have.

Great leaders know and proactively get input from their people. We’ve discussed some common reasons why this is not easy, but you should reflect objectively on your own personal situation. The bottom line is that leaders need a plan to understand yourself and your natural strengths and struggles, and we use the Leadership Behavior DNA behavioral assessment in our training and consulting for this purpose.

Leadership History Lesson for June 27th

Today, we celebrate and remember H. Ross Perot’s birthday. He was born on this day in 1930 and passed away on July 9, 2019.

Perot became heavily involved in the Vietnam War POW/MIA issue, arguing that hundreds of American servicemen were left behind in Southeast Asia after the Vietnam War. He also continued to be a faithful and enthusiastic supporter of Vietnam POWs after they returned home.

Leading with Honor FAQ – New Career

A Leading with Honor FAQ – “The Class of 2021 is heading to begin their post-secondary education or enter the workforce. What specific recommendations do you have for them as they embark on this lifetime of leadership?”

Lee Ellis’ Answer – “Be clear about your principles of integrity and character and battle to live accordingly. It will take courage, so learn to lean into your doubts and fears to do what you know is right. Know yourself, accept yourself, and be authentic. Be humble so you can always be learning and growing. Be confident so you can be authentic. The most important attributes of a good leader come from a healthy individual—someone who is real, authentic, and humble yet self-confident.

If you spend time worrying about yourself or your competition, rather than just doing your job really well, that’s not healthy. Self-doubt, feelings of insufficiency and false pride cause a person to be self-focused, which undermines one’s judgment and performance.

Know yourself, and know what you’re committed to, and don’t be afraid to keep your commitments and do what you know is honorable. If you do that, you’re probably going to do well.”
