This double standard. . .

A young college man is supposed to sleep around. As a matter of fact, he can have multiple women in one day and that's cool.
As a matter of fact, start playing Aloe Blacc:

Now, if a young college woman, if you're not a virgin, you're the slut of the world. Let's forget that you're at an age where you're exploring your sexuality as well. But this is America and you're supposed to keep your legs clothes until "The Man" comes for you.

Then, you'd better give him what he wants and don't change your mind because he's being too forceful, or treating you as if you're Beauty in The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty. If said man is a football player or famous, the police will encourage you to turning a blind eye, because it would make your life hard.
Because, honey, you are not the man -- you are a slut.

Social media will damn you to hell, while exalting "The Man" for getting off on charges. This story has played out so many times: Ben Roethlisberger, Jerramy Stevens, Stubenville, Ohio, and Maryville.

This all brings me to the reactions that I've seen about the Jameis Winston case.
There are people who say: This came out to keep him from getting a Heisman. Yeah, because a woman is going to say she was raped to stop someone from getting a trophy. What's her motivation? Who would pay her to degrade herself?

you are calling her a victim. And noone knows what happened. Now what happens if they charged him and then it comes out she made it up...please go Google Brian Banks NFL prospect. Women make things up as well. Maybe, just maybe he is the victim. Him making money in the NFL doesn't make him guilty.Let's not forget the FACT that the young lady said she didn't want it to COME to this. So was she raped or was she a ONE night stand and at the time of the sexual assault accusation she was embarrassed? Please dont believe everything the media says. If she really wanted to make a real statement she would have came out to the public and said what ever needed to be said. No police could make me keep my mouth shut and tell me things would be hard if i reported a crime COME ON MAN!!!!! THIS IS WHY WE HAVE A JUSTICE SYSTEM!! None of us know what happen because we weren't there, and while I don't want to start and argument, it's not a crime because there were no charges. If he needs redemption it's to God, not a ESPN national television audience.Being charged can also mean you are innocent. Just look at the Duke Lacrosse case. Those charges were dropped, and the overzealous prosecutor was disbarred, sent to jail for a short time and fined. it ruined the lives of several people. The players had to drop out of school and transfer and the coach resigned. They used bad judgement in hiring a stripper in the first place, as Winston used bad judgement too. I am not in way making light of sexual assault, but I really believe this is not an example of a football player getting a free pass.So many people are treating the victim in this case as if she is sub-human or she asked for it.  And yes, she is a victim! A victim of the system:  After all, a police officer allegedly told her not to report a crime.
We requested assistance from an attorney friend to interact with law enforcement on the victim’s behalf. When the attorney contacted Detective (Scott) Angulo immediately after Winston was identified, Detective Angulo told the attorney that Tallahassee was a big football town and the victim needs to think long and hard before proceeding against him because she will be raked over the coals and her life will be made miserable…
Way to protect and serve. I'm guessing this loser still has a job. So, please tell me again how she isn't a victim.
Please.

Heather Cox, you better not say you're sorry

Following the ACC championship game, ESPN's Heather Cox asked Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston about the sexual assault case he walked away from with no charges.
She didn't ask if he did it, she asked what he learned and why he kept silent. He walked away. Now some say she went too far. I say, she didn't go far enough. All I can say now is she has nothing to apologize for and if ESPN makes her say she's sorry, they suck!

Slipping on the victim's shoes. . .Let Cuba have Florida

I think we should give Florida to Cuba. I love a lot of people in the Sunshine State, but I need y'all to move to Georgia, ASAP. Why should Florida be Cuba's? There are a myriad of reasons, but right now, I'm going to focus on the Jameis Winston situation.

Florida State and Duke played the ACC Championship game in my city last night, the same week that a laughing and jovial Florida State alum, masquerading as a state's attorney said Winston would not be charged for sexual assault allegations that were lodged against him.

There was laughter. There were jokes. There were smiles. The news conference in which Florida state attorney Willie Meggs announced that Jameis Winston was not going to be charged with sexual battery was an extremely light-hearted affair.
Everyone seemed so incredibly happy to be talking about an alleged sexual assault.
Reporter: "Was there a sexual assault?"
Meggs, laughing: "Well, that's kind of why we're here."
Way to stand up for a victim, Meggs. Then again, since the victim in this case came forward, she's been treated as if SHE DID SOMETHING WRONG.

Then consider the strong words from the accuser's lawyer that she was advised by the police not to press charges, and this looks like a group of authorities in a stereotypical small town fumbling their legal responsibilities because they were so smitten by their football team.
Reporter: "Any idea why she was hesitant to tell you who her boyfriend was?"
Meggs: "Well, tell us about your girlfriend."
More laughs. It was a regular riot, with that smiling former state senator, Al Lawson, standing in the background, playing Ed McMahon to Meggs' Johnny Carson.
Can you imagine what the alleged victim thought of that scene? What about a woman in Tallahassee who today is dealing with sexual assault? Or any victim of any crime, male or female? It had to be disheartening, if not downright chilling, to watch that.
That's the face of justice in northern Florida in the 21st century? My goodness.
I'm going to take it a step further. As a woman watching and reading this, my ovaries are quivering. I feel as if my body means nothing to the law when a football championship is at stake. I'm scared, devalued and I want to crawl into a hole where no one will ever touch me again.

Or maybe I want to apply for a gun permit and get a pistol. Then, I'm going to go get trained by a woman instructor on how to use this gun. The next time some one hurts me, I am not going to call 9-1-1. I'm going to stand my damned ground. After all, reporting a crime is going to be hard on me in a football town like Tallahassee, what will a trial do to me?
The statement from the accuser’s family:
“The victim and her family appreciate the State Attorney’s efforts in attempting to conduct a proper investigation after an inordinate delay by the Tallahassee Police Department.
“The victim in this case had the courage to immediately report her rape to the police and she relied upon them to seek justice.
“The victim has grave concerns that her experience, as it unfolded in the public eye and through social media, will discourage other victims of rape from coming forward and reporting.”
Here's what we've learned from this situation, famous or popular men can commit sexual assault, but if random Joe does it, he may or may not get charged. But you can best believe there will be an attempt at an investigation. Yeah, Florida is Cuba's bastard child. Dear Castro, come get your baby.

Holidays and Deadlines

Somewhere, there is a writer burning stuffing but keeping a plot tight. Well, I'm not burning stuffing but I am trying to keep this plot tight. When you're a writer, holidays only mean time to writer. With my hated day job and this bootleg holiday schedule, I'm in danger of writing at the Thanksgiving table on Thursday, but not during the Cowboys game. Hey, I got priorities. But I digress.
Writing during the holidays will cause different reactions from family members. There's Uncle Joe and his,"girl, when are you going to write about me?"Normally, Uncle Joe is way past his prime and his stories about how he met your auntie -- creepy! While you want to tell Uncle Joe to have several seats, he'll drop a nugget that more than likely will end up in your next book. This is why you always bring rum for Uncle Joe.

Book Page reviews Love After War

This morning, I logged on to Twitter and got my happy dance on when I saw a tweet from @BookPage. This monthly book review publication out of Nashville reviewed Love After War.
Here's what they said:

HOT HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS
In a world of wealth and glamour, former lovers reunite in Love After War by Cheris Hodges. Two years after Dana Singleton’s boyfriend declared that things were over, she finds herself back in Los Angeles and face-to-face with Adrian Bryant—the very guy who broke her heart. A celebrity photographer based in New York City, Dana is on assignment on the West Coast to take publicity shots for a film studio. Running into her old flame wasn’t on her agenda, but there he is, a successful nightclub owner, still as handsome as ever. With one look at Dana, Adrian realizes his mistake. He immediately knows he wants her back, even though wooing the woman he still loves is a distraction from the goal he’s been pursuing since their breakup—revenge on the man he’s learned is his biological father, a hotel magnate who turned his back on Adrian and his mother. As Dana becomes aware of Adrian’s obsession, she realizes he’ll have to come to grips with his past before they can find a future. This story sizzles!

Which is sweeter? The love or the revenge? Find out this Tuesday in
Love After War

This girl right here is not living for the weekends, but living for Tuesday, Nov. 5, the official release date of Love After War.I hope you will support my latest book. The story of Adrian Bryant and Dana Singleton was a great one to write. I had so much fun digging into the love story between these two. And can I tell you how close I am to getting a motorcycle. You'll understand when you read the book.
I need you, dear readers, to stop me from signing up for Harley Davidson of Charlotte's rider's edge class. Y'all know if I get a motorcycle, it's going to be a hot time in the city. I think I'll just get a motorcycle jacket and matching boots. After all, you can't drink Starbucks and cruise the highway. :) This is my tenth year as a published author. I can't even believe I just typed that. I want to thank everyone who has ever picked up a Cheris Hodges book. I hope I can count on you to pick up Love After War this Tuesday. First week sales are critical. So, with the holidays right around the corner, consider books for gifts. They never expire, they are economical and if you purchase Love After War as a gift, I'll send you autograph labels. Just email me at cheris87@bellsouth.net with the name of the person I need to sign in the book. Remember, buy my book this Tuesday and help me spread the word! (On a side note, keep me off a motorcycle! Tell me all the reasons why I shouldn't do it in the comments below.)
