COWBOY HONDAS

                                          By Stephen Bly     Copyright©1993,2010
Long before Japanese car imports…in fact, decades beforethey invented automobiles…hondas existed in the U.S.A. To an old-time cowboy, ahonda is a knotted or spliced eyelet at the business end of a rope used formaking or building a loop.  Sometimes a metal honda or ring was used, but many acattleman figured the metal could gouge out an eye and wouldn't set tight aswell. So, most hondas are tied into the rope itself, whether it's hemp ornylon, with a piece of slick leather, called a burner, sewn about the upper endof the loop. The rope won't easily wear through it. A rawhide reataconsists of a honda braided into the rope.
The honda is a tiny loop that allows the main part of therope to thread like string through the eye of a needle. The honda and theburner provide places to check out an old rope to see how much it's beenabused. No matter what the size of the catch, the pressure mounts on the honda.
 Ever feel like ahonda? Got the main stress for a program? A group? A problem? A relationship?
St. Paul endured that kind of tension: "Besides everythingelse, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. Who isweak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn?"(2 Corinthians 11:28,29).
Everyone who's serious about leadership relates to Paul. That's partof the calling, the divine duty to bear.
Here's some simple helps if you're feeling honda heavy.
1) Get out. Breathe a moment of pure air. Jiggle some joy.2) Take some time off—get away from the strain, if only anhour or two. 2) Plan a mini-vacation—one you've put off for a long time. 3) Save change in a get-away jar—fun money thatsaves your sanity.

LESSONS FROM THE OPEN ROAD

Lessons From The Open RoadDevotionals by K. Dawn Byrd
Sometimeslife is hard. Sometimes learning new things is hard. Just when I thought I'dmastered the parking lot where I was learning to ride my little Yamaha Viragostarter bike, I pulled out, forgot to hit the brake, did an Evel Knievel, andjumped a short concrete wall, landing in some trees. My poor little bike limpedhome with a hole in the crankcase the size of a quarter. J-B Weld to therescue!
I'mstubborn, too stubborn to quit. After I recovered from the sore neck thatresulted from my stunt, I climbed back on the old iron horse. Eventually, Igraduated from the parking lot and hit the streets. When I'd learned to ridewell enough to satisfy hubby, he bought himself a new Harley and I inheritedhis anniversary edition Harley Davidson Sportster. And, when I graduated withmy masters degree, you'd never guess what I wanted. Yep, a new bike. I becamethe proud owner of a Screamin Eagle V-Rod.
Allgood things must eventually come to an end. I enjoyed my days on the road, butfound another passion. Writing. I work a full-time job and since there's onlyso much time in the day, I have to choose what's most important to me. The bikehad to go. Occasionally, I miss it, but for the most part, I'd rather bewriting. I'm hoping the devotions in Lessonsfrom the Open Road will minister to your heart as much as writing them didto mine.
Lessons from the OpenRoad iscurrently available in ebook format and will be coming soon in print. All proceeds will bedonated to my church's building fund for the new church that's currently underconstruction.

LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!

Jan & Janet
A counselor once told a friend of mine, "You've neverreally had a childhood. You need to play more."
So the two of us pulled shoes and socks off and tiptoedbarefoot in a park fountain. We did an over-nighter in sleeping bags in my yard.We painted pictures with our fingers. We caught butterflies in jars. We threwpopcorn at critters. Then, for a finale, we rolled down the slight slant of ahill on my front lawn. . .which brought the neighbor out to ask us,"What's going on?"
A mini-break doesn't take much time or expense. It can be adance in a meadow. Or a walk in dawn's light. Or drawing forms in the sand.Planting a flower or herb garden on the window sill. Getting out the oldinstrument you used to play. Watching the different ways flocks of birds fly.Creating a new recipe from ingredients in your cupboard. Looking out yourwindow long enough to notice something you've missed before. Writing a song.Hopping on a horse. It's like giving a shout-out of praise to God.
Child's play is serious stuff. No matter your age or stage,you've got to make time for fun. Do something that guarantees laughter. Gowatch a comedy. Get close to a funny person. Find humor in your mistakes andstresses. Chuckles are good. A big belly laugh or two is better.
Norman Cousins, former editor of Saturday Review andauthor of Anatomy of an Illness, wrote that "laughter is jogging onthe inside." It's inside-out aerobics. Every system in your body gets aworkout. Muscles relax. Neurochemicals called endorphins release into the bloodstream.
"Goodpeople, cheer God! Right-living people sound best when praising. Use guitars toreinforce your Hallelujahs! Play his praise on a grand piano! Invent your ownnew song to him; give him a trumpet fanfare." (Psalm 33:1-2 The Message)
Can you take a moment to celebrate life and praise yourMaker today? How will you do that?

WHERE’S YOUR HOME STATION?

Stephen BlyCopyright©1993,2010
One time I drove through Virginia Dale, located near the Colorado/Wyoming border, about halfway between Ft. Collins and Laramie. I intended to stop and look it over, but a blizzard kicked up quite a fuss. So, I kept driving.
Virginia Dale Home StationVirginia Dale was a home station on the old stage route, named by the notorious Jack Slade for his wife. When they laid out stagecoach routes across the Old West, they tried to follow some sort of orderly pattern. There were swing stations to change horses every 8 to 10 miles along the road. This lonely outpost may hold one employee who prepped horses to be rested, healthy, fed and ready to hitch when the stage rolled in.
Virginia Dale ChurchEvery 50 miles or so along the trail you could find a home station. Often western towns got their start this way. The home station, usually built of rough lumber, provided passengers with food, a night’s sleep, and a few items to purchase. It also served as a social center for miles around. If any special event got planned, folks from all over the countryside headed for the home station.
A church can be that home station for you. A place of rest and refreshment as you connect with others to worship and praise your heavenly Father. A place for spiritual renewal for your life's challenges and trials.
Sure, you can ignore and neglect this on-the-trail resource. Even in the Old West some wagons chose to pass by the home stations. But that could kill the horses and burden the weary passengers. Old timers knew better.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, where is your home station right now? Tell us about it.
SARAI, a new novel by Jill Eileen Smith
SARAIHe promised her his heart. She promised him a son. But how long mustthey wait?
Sarai, the last child of heraged father, is beautiful, spoiled, and used to getting her own way. Even as ayoung girl, she is aware of the way men look at her, including her half brotherAbram. When Abram finally requests Sarai's hand, she asks one thing – that hepromise never to take another wife as long as she lives. Even her father thinksthe demand is restrictive and agrees to the union only if Sarai makes a promisein return – to give Abram a son and heir. Certain she can easily do that, Saraiagrees.
But as the years stretch on andSarai's womb remains empty, she becomes desperate to fulfill her end of thebargain – lest Abram decide that he will not fulfill his. To what lengths willSarai go in her quest to bear a son? And how long will Abram's patience last?
Review from PW (Publisher'sWeekly):"Smith is at her best in handling thetriangulated relationship between Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar … Smith breathes newimaginative life into a well-known sacred story."
SARAI Excerpt: Sarai glancedacross the courtyard, catching Abram's gaze. His half smile and the twinkle inhis eye warmed her more than the wine she had tasted at the start of theceremony. Music drifted around them as the bridal couple—their nephew Lot andhis new wife, Melah—took their seats on the bench beneath the canopy andaccepted rich foods from the hands of the servants."This wholewedding is a disgrace, you know." Sarai's sister-in-law Milcah stood at herelbow and leaned close to her ear. "Why her father agreed to the marriage afterLot had already humbled the girl . . . Though I suppose he didn't have muchchoice. Who else would want her after she'd already given in to Lot's charms?"Milcah batted at a fly, sending it away. "I can't imagine why Lot couldn't waitwith such a one. It's not as though she's a beauty or a temptress. It seemslike he could have done better." The last words came out in a whisper as Milcahmoved in close again.Sarai turned fromwatching the bridal couple to meet Milcah's pinched gaze. "If it is true that ababe is already on the way, it is better they marry." She had wearied of theheated debate and shame Lot had brought down on her household, particularly onAbram."Abi Terah seemspleased with the arrangement." Milcah touched Sarai's shoulder and pointedtoward their father. "Though his conditions did seem a little harsh toward Lot,while Melah came away already with child and married to a man who can never puther aside or take another. I might have given in to Nahor before our betrothalfor such a promise." She laughed at that, then shifted her ample bulk, burstingwith child herself, to face Sarai once more.To read the rest of the chapter, visit Jill's website: http://www.jilleileensmith.com/books/sarai/preview/~~~~~~~~~~~~~  For links to purchase the book online visit: http://www.jilleileensmith.com/books/sarai/  or visit your favorite local bookstore.
"WELL, I'LL BE HOG-TIED"
by StephenBlyCopyright©1993,2010
A localgirls' high school basketball team put on an excellent show. Quick, aggressive,fearless in diving after loose balls, they drove to the basket, fast break,full court press, and hit three points.  An amazing exhibition. The other teamlooked like they wanted to go home after the first quarter. They lost by 35points.
An old timer next to me shook his head. "Them little ladiessure did hog-tie that team in green." He got that right. The losing team seemed at times to bebound in ropes.
To hog-tie means to throw an animal and then bind it bytying its two hind feet and a front one together. In rodeo, the rope's called a'piggin' strang.' Loop the forefoot and shove the back feet on top, then wrapall three with a couple loops and tie a half-hitch or hooey. This keeps theanimal immobile while you do your doctoring or whatever else might need to bedone.
You don't hog-tie a horse. Or people. But you can tiethem up socially or mentally or emotionally. Even spiritually.Sin hog-ties us more than anything else. It incapacitatesus, makes us useless to accomplish any good thing.
The Bible says, "Throw offeverything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles and let us runwith perseverance the race marked out for us" (Hebrews 12:1).
Sometimes we hog-tie ourselves. Wouldn't that a strangesight? Does a runner prepare for a big race by tying both feet and a handtogether? She'd wallow in the dirt while the other racers lapped her.
What hog-ties you? Jesus wants to set you free.
A CROOKED FENCE PRODS PRAYER
Janet Chester BlyJanet Chester BlyCopyright 2008
Our little country church built afence with low grade boards that had been donated. Within months, the boardstwisted into crooked shapes. I hated that fence and it seemed to take foreverto get it fixed. Each time I drove up to the church parking lot, I winced.
Then a friend remarked, "When I lookat that fence, it's a prod to me to pray about all that's wrong--everyout-of-whack relationship and our neighbors and church members who suffer fromsome pain or trouble."
I followed her lead. When I spied thebent boards, I interceded for burdened folks. I even took a photo of the fencefor my prayer journal.
Now that the fence is straight again, I'm reminded topraise God for His many answers to my prayers.
Praying for others is the mostunselfish thing we can do. To bring hope, help and healing to countless peopleyou know. You might not be able to aid them in other ways, but you can givethem the gift of prayer. To get you out of yourself and focused on someoneelse. You invite God's purpose and power into the situation.
"This lifts us out of the punyreasons for living that we humans invent apart from Him," says Ruth Myers inher book 31 Days of Prayer.
31 Days of PrayerWe become partners with the Lord ofthe Universe to impart miracles into mayhem, instill exciting, freshpossibilities into sterile circumstances.
For whom do you need to pray today?How long will you commit to pray forthem?
SAVING HOPE, a novel by Margaret Daley
Saving HopeThe reason I wrote SavingHope, the first book in Men of the Texas Rangers Series, is because humantrafficking is over a $32 billion dollar business per year and growing. Ittouches all countries, including the United States. Some of our young peopleare being affected by this problem and robbed of their childhood. Through itall I wanted to give a sense of hope through the Lord.
Blurb for SavingHope: When a teenager goes missing from the Beaconof Hope School, Texas Ranger Wyatt Sheridan and school director Kate Winsloware forced into a dangerous struggle against a human trafficking organization.But the battle brings dire consequences as Wyatt's daughter is terrorized andKate is kidnapped.
Now it's personal. Wyatt finds both hisfaith and investigative skills challenged as he fights to discover themastermind behind the ring before evil destroys everyone he loves.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
The opening of SavingHope:
Rosegripped her cell phone so tightly her muscles ached. "Where are you, Lily?"
"At—Nowhere Motel." A sobcaught on the end of the last word. "Help—me." Lily's breath rattled, followedby a clunking sound as though she'd dropped the phone.
Rose paced the smallbathroom at Beacon of Hope. "Lily?" Sweat coated her palms, and she rubbed herfree hand against her jeans.
Silence taunted her.
What have you done? But thesecond that Rose asked that question, an image came to mind of her friend lyingon the dingy gray sheets in the cheap motel, wasted, trying anyway she could toforget the horror of her life.
"Lily, talk to me. Stay onthe line." Pulling the door open, Rose entered her room. When she saw herroommate, she came to a stop.
Cynthia's wide-eyed gazefixed on Rose for a few seconds before the fourteen-year-old dropped her headand stared at the hardwood floor. Rose crossed to her dresser, dug into theback of the top drawer, and grabbed a small, worn leather case.
She pushed past her roommateand headed into the upstairs hallway.
Striding toward thestaircase, Rose dismissed her roommate's startled expression and focused on thecrisis at hand. "Lily, are you still there?"
A sound as though someonefumbled the phone and caught it filtered through the connection. "Rose, Ineed—you."
"I told you I would come ifyou wanted to get out. I'll be—"
A click cut off the rest ofRose's words. No, Lily. Please hang on.
