Interview: Chance and Dakota from A BRIDGE UNBROKEN

InterviewThe characters in the Miller’s Creek novels rarely cooperate. I go to a lot of time and trouble in plotting out the story before I write one word, but without fail the characters usually take over and rewrite at least part of the story for me.

Honestly, I don’t mind. Their version is usually much more interesting than mine. ;)

Here’s an interview where  Chance and Dakota–the hero and heroine from A Bridge Unbroken–turn the tables on me. Some of you may have already read the interview on various blogs during the virtual book tour, but I just had to re-post it here to show just how unruly the characters in my stories usually are!

Character Interview with Chance and Dakota from A BRIDGE UNBROKEN

Chance: (finger to lips) Shhhh! Don’t tell Cathy. She’s supposed to arrive here in a sec to interview me and Dakota. What she doesn’t know is that we’re gonna turn the interview around and put her in the hot seat for a change. After all, she’s put us through the ringer in writing A Bridge Unbroken. It’s only fair that we return the favor. Right? Oops, here she comes. (returns to seat and acts all nonchalant)

Cathy: (enters and moves to seat) Hey, you two. Y’all ready to get this interview underway?

Chance: (with a smirk and a sideways glance exchanged with Dakota) Of course. Why wouldn’t we be?

Dakota: (her green eyes shooting daggers) Yeah, it’s not like we have anything else to do with our time, thanks to you.

Cathy: (shifting in her chair uncomfortably) Uh…what do you mean?

Dakota: Renovate a farmhouse, rebuild a farm, fix a bridge, work on our relationship, get away from the antagonist, all while dealing with an unexpected gift of farm animals and a dog? I mean, really, couldn’t you just send us to outer space in a defunct space shuttle or something?

Chance: (reaches over and pats Dakota’s arm) Easy, honey, your Irish temper is showing.

Dakota: (doesn’t answer, but continues to shoot daggers at Cathy)

Cathy: (swallows hard and glances down at her notes) Um, sorry. First question: Why did you two introduce yourselves to me with such major problems to overcome?

Chance: Ha! That’s not the way I see it. You’re the one who created us, not the other way around. Why’d you make us with such problems to overcome?

Cathy: Because I wanted to explore the topic of forgiveness. It’s such a huge part of our faith, but all believers tend to struggle with it, especially when the offender seems unconcerned and determined to destroy us, you know?

Dakota: (nods, now her eyes hold understanding) What makes it even harder is when our own actions hurt others. We can’t go back and undo what’s been done. It’s especially difficult when we have trouble forgiving ourselves. And then when the other party accepts no responsibility… (her words trail off, and she glances at Chance)

Chance: (frowning) Haven’t we discussed this enough already? Yeah, so maybe I have a hard time seeing the speck in my eye–

Dakota: Speck?

Chance: Okay, so maybe it’s a little bigger than that.

Cathy: Little?

Chance: You, too?

(Cathy and Dakota share a knowing look.)

Chance: (with an exasperated sigh) Okay, beam. You happy now?

(Both Cathy and Dakota smile and nod.)

Cathy: (staring at the clock) Wow, time really does fly fast when you’re having fun. Better move on to question two. Dakota, why do you have the tendency to run away?

Dakota: (crosses arms, a glare on her face) Well, as I recall, you gave me a pretty tough childhood. (inserts sarcasm) Let me express my undying gratitude.

Cathy: (smiling) You’re very welcome. Anything to help the story.

Chance: Yeah, speaking of that, why do you put the story above your own characters? Don’t we deserve some gratitude for bowing to your commands?

Cathy: Um, first of all, you are the story; the story is you. That’s just the way it works. And as for bowing to my commands? Well, let’s just say that both of you are two of the most unruly characters I’ve ever written. You took over on more than one occasion and told the story for me.

Dakota: I would think you’d be grateful.

Cathy: If I wrote by the seat of my pants, maybe. But I like knowing what you guys are gonna do before I ever start writing the story.

(Chance and Dakota look at each other.)

Dakota: Great. Our author has OCD.

Chance: Big time. But at least it explains why she put us through so much.

Cathy: Enough about me. Chance, would you explain to my reader friends how you got those scars on your face?

(Chance blushes and squirms in his seat.)

Dakota: (still looking at Chance, with a compassionate expression) Uh, I’ll take responsibility for that. Sorry, Chance.

Chance: (smiling tenderly at Dakota) It’s over and done with. Besides, I gave you a few scars as well.

Dakota: (smiling back) Yeah, not all scars are visible. But I think we’ve done pretty well in moving past our scars. (She takes his hand.)

Chance: (brings her hand to his lips and plants a soft kiss there) Agreed. (He stands and pulls Dakota up with him.) Interview over.

Cathy: (her face incredulous) What? But I’m not through.

Chance: Oh yes, you are. (He and Dakota turn and move away.)

Dakota: (glancing back over her shoulder) Seriously, Cathy, how can you expect to write a romance and not give your hero and heroine some alone time? I mean, really.

Cathy: (watches them walk away, then produces a sheepish grin) Sorry. Did I mention that these two characters don’t always do what I say? (sighs and waves good-bye) Thanks for coming to the interview.

I want to express my utmost gratitude to those of you who took the time to vote in this friendly competition. Words can’t fully express how blessed I feel to have such supportive reader friends. An extra big “Thanks!” to the Miller’s Creek Main Street Team for help in spreading not only the news about the Clash, but also about the book in general. You guys rock! :)

I also want to express my gratefulness to the Lord, who makes all things possible, who lifts my head and holds my hand and clears the obstacles from my path. He is my all in all! All the glory and praise belongs to Him! Soli deo gloria!

What Being a Clash of the Titles Winner Means:

First of all, this wonderful site creates a tremendous opportunity for authors to get their books before the public. Just being listed on one of their clashes is an honor. But as the winner, A Bridge Unbroken will receive extra publicity through a side-bar listing, today’s Laurel 2014 (medium)COTT blog post, and by sending that post on to the COTT Blog Alliance for further posting.

In addition, the book will be entered into the COTT Laurel Award competition free of charge. To me, award programs are not so much for the award itself as for publicity for the book and valuable feedback from the judges.

Clash of the Titles Winner Blog Postings:

I’ll be using this area below to add the COTT Blog Alliance links as they occur. (This is the least I can do for these blogs who volunteer their blogs for these types of postings–share a little link love!) The post will most likely be the same in each location, but if you get a chance, please drop by at your convenience to help support these wonderful blogs who support Christian authors and their books. Thank you!

Corporate Devotion

Corporate devotion(NOTE: I’m guest blogging today over at the InspyRomance blog. Hope you can drop by.)

In yesterday’s post from our study of the early church, we saw the infant church ‘continually devoting themselves.’ Today we’re going to look at what they did to express that devotion as individuals who made up the body of Christ.

They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles. And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need. Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved. -Acts 2:42-47 (NASB)

The Apostle’s Teaching

Just who were these apostles? In general, an apostle is one who is sent with a message. Specifically, the apostles were the ones who had once been the disciples/followers/learners of Jesus. The following verse tells us they were chosen by Jesus:

…until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom He had chosen. -Acts 1:2 (NASB)

Acts 1:13-14 says this about them:

When they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room where they were staying; that is, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. (NASB)

These guys were passing on to others what Jesus had passed on to them. Notice that they were also ‘continually devoting themselves,’ in this case, to and through prayer. In like manner, the people of the early church were continually devoting themselves to the teaching of these men who had been with Jesus.

For the sake of clarity, I want to point out that the apostles were not the focus of this part of the verse. Instead the focus was on their teaching, of their proclamation of God’s Word as revealed through His Son Jesus.

Fellowship

Unfortunately, the modern-day church has watered down the meaning of this word. We equate fellowship with a Sunday School party or pot-luck dinner, which is on the right track but an incomplete picture in my humble estimation. The original Greek, koinonia, goes much deeper than merely spending time together in a party-like setting. Instead, it is an interdependency and commonality. Unity.

This topic could literally take up a blog post or even a book, but in short, the church is meant to be a fellowship of believers in fellowship with God and His Son Jesus. Our commonality is Christ and carrying out His mission to save that which is lost. We are dependent on Him and on each other in carrying out His will and mission during our time on this planet.

Verses for Further Study: 1 John 1:3;  1 John 1:7; 1 Corinthians 1:9; 1 Corinthians 12:12

Breaking of Bread

The punctuation of this passage seems to further break down fellowship into two parts, first in the breaking of bread. This certainly implies, but does not limit itself to, the Lord’s Supper. Throughout the Gospels we see Jesus breaking bread and praying. In this sense, it is a communion of sharing food. But as a symbol of Jesus declaring Himself as the Bread of Life, breaking bread takes on deeper significance.

Prayer

Another way in which the early church expressed this continuous devotion and fellowship was through prayer. While this is another vast topic that has been expounded in hundreds of books, for the purpose of this study on the early church, let it be noted that prayer is communion with God and something we do together as the body of Christ.

Conclusion

To follow the model of the early church, we should be continually devoting ourselves to learning God’s Word through His messengers and to fellowship with each other and with God through communion and prayer. In this way, we also follow Christ’s repeated command in John 13:34-35 and John 15:12 to “love one another” for the purpose of letting the world know we are His disciples.

Discussion

Do you think the modern-day church does a good job of following the early church’s model of corporate devotion? Why or why not?
What does the word ‘fellowship’ mean to you?

Continually Devoting Themselves

continually devoting themselves

Several years ago in a Sunday School class, we got off onto a discussion of the early church as described in the book of Acts. We all agreed that the modern-day church scarcely resembled the first church. In my humble opinion, churches have grown even further away from that early model.

My sister and I are in the early stages of plotting a novel about a recently-converted ex-convict, now on parole, who attempts to start life afresh in the small community in which she grew up. The only problem? Both the town and the local church have a hard time getting past her past.

As is always the case when I write a new book, I delve into relevant scripture passages in an attempt to immerse the story in scriptural accuracy. For this study I intend to look at the New Testament churches and at the problems they confronted. This first passage from Acts has enough meat it in for several devotionals, so over the next few weeks, I hope to touch briefly on what made this church successful. I also hope to spur on thought and conversation around this one question:

Can the model of the Acts 2 church be reproduced today?
Click To Tweet - Powered By CoSchedule

Continually…

The grammar of the Acts 2 passage above frequently uses an active tense, which shows that the actions of the members of the early day church were something they did continually. And what was it that they did continually?

Devoting…

Here’s the continuous action again with the -ing suffix, with the word ‘devote’ attached in front. To devote means to: To give or apply (one’s time, attention, or self) entirely to a particular activity, pursuit, cause, or person; to set apart for a specific purpose or use: land devoted to mining; to set apart by or as if by a vow or solemn act; consecrate.

All throughout God’s Word we see examples of people devoting themselves to God, which is a committing of their entire beings and lives to Him and for His purposes. The Greek word here means “persevering,” in the sense of not giving up and staying committed to Him.

What did they devote and keep on devoting?

Themselves…

Though this is self-explanatory, I think the following verses also help when it comes to understanding our individual roles as members of the body of Christ.

And He was saying to them all, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” -Luke 9:23 (NASB)

Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. -Romans 12:1-2 (NASB)

Part of devoting ourselves to Christ is to sacrifice ourselves. If we don’t carry out this crucial step, we’ll end up serving self instead.

Conclusion

If we truly desire to transform our churches, it must start with us as individuals continually devoting ourselves to Christ and allowing Him to transform us from the inside out.

Discussion

Why does our personal devoting of self to Christ need to be a continuous action?
Do you think the model of the Acts 2 church can be reproduced today? Do you think we should even try? Why or why not?

Everyday Hero Jasmine Augustine

The world is full of everyday heroes who sometimes go unnoticed in the hustle and bustle of life. Because of this, I decided to create a series of interview posts about the everyday heroes I come in contact with.

Today’s interview with one of my Facebook friends, Jasmine Augustine. Jasmine is one of the Miller’s Creek Main Street Team members and has been so sweet to help with getting the word out about the Miller’s Creek Novels. She recently hosted A Bridge Unbroken on its virtual book tour on her blog MontanaMade by Jasmine.

Welcome, Jasmine! So glad to have you here. Tell us a little about yourself and your family.

I am the middle of 3 children and the only girl. As a single girl in my mid-twenties I live a pretty quiet and boring life, mostly filling my time with volunteer work and reading/reviewing. One of the most exciting things coming up is that my parents will be celebrating their 40th anniversary next month!

Forty years is a big deal. Please pass on my congratulations! What hobbies do you enjoy?

Reading first! I also enjoy making bead jewelry, working on my blog website, sewing/quilting, and watching old classic movies.

What are you passionate about?

Many things I think, but right now it would be my museum work. I am a very busy volunteer and one of my favorite places is my local museum, I have several jobs there from data entry in the archives to greeting visitors at the front desk to being a new board member. If you get me started talking about the museum you can hardly get me to shut up.

5. What are your favorite books and/or movies? Why?

I read mostly Christian Fiction and I love mystery/suspense and historicals. For non-fiction reading I spend most of my time reading history-related books. Aah, movies! I rarely watch new movies or anything newer than 1975 really. I am a young person that adores black-and-white classic movies. I mean, you can’t get any better than John Wayne, Cary Grant, Doris Day, Roy Rogers, Fred Astaire…

Agreed! If you could spend time with any person–past or present–who would you choose? What would you talk about?

Anyone? Well there are so many, too many, to choose from. I think, though, that I would go and spend some time with my Great Grandma and ask her more questions about herself. She was an amazing woman and I was very close to her until we moved.

I’d love to sit down with my great-grandmother too, Jasmine. There’s so much I wish I would have asked while she was still living. What’s something that not very many people know about you that you’d like them to know about you?

Hmm, that is a hard one. To those that know me I am a pretty open book, pretty much what you see is what you get. Here is one thing, I hate talking on the telephone and much prefer email or face-to-face communication.

I’m not a big fan of talking on the phone either–unless it’s my mom, kids, or grand-kids. What’s your favorite Bible verse? Why? What’s your favorite hymn or praise song? Why?

Either Joshua 1:9 or Psalm 46, because they encourage a person to strength and faith.

As for hymns, I have two actually, How Firm A Foundation and What Wondrous Love Is This? They are encouraging, awe inspiring, and they have beautiful music. Another favorite is Be Thou My Vision.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go? Why?

I would go straight to Ireland. I have been fascinated with Ireland since I was quite young and have dreamed of going there for years.

Take me with you! I have lots of Irish blood in my family. What is your all-time favorite family vacation or event? Why?

Actually, you might laugh at this one, it was my very first vacation ever last year when I was 25. We took a week-long car trip, my parents and I, and not only did we visit with my younger brother at his job but we also got to visit some places I have wanted to for years. It was also the very last fun thing we did before we lost my Dad’s dog to cancer. A close 2nd favorite would be the trip Dad and I took to purchase a vehicle and I got to see the ocean for the first time, I was 21 and had dreamed of seeing the ocean since I was 3-4.

What do you do for a living?

I am a volunteer by trade. Actually, jobs are scarce where I live so I keep busy volunteering at my local museum, library, and animal shelter. Someday I hope to use my museum volunteering to get further education and maybe someday a job in that field.

Tell us about your pets.

You sure you have time for this one? My family has Alaskan Malamutes and also cats. I, myself, have two dogs named Tell and Ginger; he is named for a favorite book character and she is named for a black-and-white movie actress. I also have one cat named Bentley, and two other cats that are sorta mine. Cathleen is named for Riverdance but we usually call her Psycho. I also have Roscoe who is hard to explain. He is a small black and white cat with a big attitude. I named him Roscoe after Roscoe P. Coltrane for obvious reasons.

If you could start your own business, what would it be? Why?

A bookstore. I love every aspect of books, the smell, the feel, the stories.

Tell us about something you were able to overcome with the Lord’s help.

My extreme shyness. I am still a definite introvert but God placed several things in my life to take me out of my comfort zone and get me to communicate with and even enjoy meeting new people.

Jasmine, I learned so many new and wonderful things about you! I had no idea we have so much in common Thank you for being one of my everyday heroes! :)

One Thing We All Need

One ThingEven in the short time since launching A Bridge Unbroken and writing the companion Bible study, The Fragrance of Crushed Violets: Forgiving the Inexcusable, I’ve been confronted with situations that require me to forgive and to let go of the resulting hurt and anger.

It seems I’ve been confronted with the need to be forgiving so much here of late that I’ve practically become an expert! (Just kidding about the expert part. Trust me, I’ve still got a long way to go.) Here are a few points that have helped me in my quest to forgive. Hope you all find them beneficial as well.

One Thing We All Need: Forgiveness

"God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
Click To Tweet - Powered By CoSchedule

The above verse from Romans 5:8 is very clear about three things. God loves us, we’re all sinners, and Christ died for us. The remarkable thing is that while we were at our absolute worst, Christ forgave us as He died on the cross. We’re all sinners in need of forgiveness.

When I remember my own sinful state and consider what all I’ve been forgiven, it helps me forgive my fellow man. Max Lucado puts it this way: “You will never forgive anyone more than God has already forgiven you.”

Puts it all in perspective, doesn’t it?

Not An Option Or A Suggestion

“But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.” ~Matthew 6:15

The teachings of Jesus are pretty straightforward, aren’t they? This has always been one of those verses that makes me do a double take. For followers of Christ, forgiving others isn’t an option or a suggestion. We can’t hold out our hands for God’s forgiveness and then cross our arms across our chests and deny the same forgiveness to others.

Transformed Into His Image

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

~2 Corinthians 3:18

I’ve heard it said that we’re most like Christ when we love someone who is difficult to love. But since forgiveness is motivated by love, I would even go one step further and say that we’re most like Christ when we forgive someone who is difficult to forgive. One thought along this line that helps me when I need to forgive others is that doing so is a perfect picture to the world (and to the person we’re forgiving) of what Christ has done for us on the cross–forgiving us at our worst.

Daisy BorderNOTE: If you’re here as part of the Scavenger Hunt (Clue #3) for the Launch Party of A BRIDGE UNBROKEN, write down all the red letters in order to reveal one of my favorite quotes about forgiveness (and how I came up with the title for the new mini Bible study I wrote to go along with the latest Miller‘s Creek novel). It will also reveal the name of the famous American author who wrote the quote.

Help! I’m In A Clash!

Clash

Okay, so I’m not in a clash, but my new book A BRIDGE UNBROKEN is. The book is in a group of five new Christian novels released in April–and some pretty stiff competition, I might add–in a voting situation at Clash of the Titles (COTT). If you have a minute, would you mind heading on over to Clash of the Titles to cast your vote? While I’d really appreciate your vote, I promise not to be upset if you choose another book. This is all in the spirit of fun and exposure for new Christian fiction. Here’s the link: http://www.clashofthetitles.com/2014/05/welcome-to-our-april-new-releases-clash.html

CLASH! About the Competition:

COTT is a reader-driven contest site that features inspirational novels and asks readers to vote on their favorite, based on the book cover and a two-sentence summary. The Release Clash begins on Wednesday, May 21 and ends the following Tuesday. During that week, authors are encouraged to invite family and reader friends to cast their vote. The winning novel receives additional exposure via blog posts and sidebar posting on the COTT website, as well as on the COTT blog alliance. CLASH! About A BRIDGE UNBROKEN

Clash

Letting go to build a bridge…

A frightened runaway wants her painful past to disappear. Her plan to start afresh is derailed when she co-inherits her late grandfather’s farm with the man responsible for the scars on her heart. But he isn’t the only ghost from the past. Someone else is out to get her and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Will Chance and Dakota lay aside their grudges to restore the old farmhouse and bridge, or will evil forces sabotage their attempt at forgiveness?
