Top 10 Project Management Trends for 2014 According to ESI

ESI, a global project management consultancy, published its top 10 project management trends for 2014.  There are a few things to note regarding these trends:

Trend #3 - PM's are learning to learn through virtual learning

Absolutely agree.  Learning is going to be more and more "in the moment" where the PM will have specific needs, turn to something online to get what they need, then get back to work.

Trend #6 - Servant Leadership
Agree regarding the trend, but PM's are going to need some mentoring in how to become an effective servant leader.  Being a servant leader means you're still accountable for the work and that you are still painting the base-paths for the project.  Servant leadership run amok become anarchy.

Trend #10 - PMs asked to spend more time "leading" vs. "managing
Again PM's are going to need good examples of what a leader versus a manager does.  Organizations espousing this philosophy need to complement it with strong mentors who can help a PM understand the difference between leaders and managers and ensure that the PM doesn't abdicate accountability in the process.
