I'm invited again
I've had an email from editor-extraordinaire Gardner Dozois, inviting me to submit a novelette to another one of his signature anthologies, this one to be called The Book of Legends, due out next year. I look forward to writing something in the next couple of months.
This will be the seventh Dozois antho I've been asked into. It puts me in with the cream of the science fiction and fantasy writing community. Makes me feel as if I'm getting somewhere. I appreciate the encouragement.
Meanwhile, last year's The Book of Swords seems to be selling well, and my story "The Sword of Destiny," which introduced Baldemar the wizard's henchman, is getting good reviews -- and earning me new readers. In a few months, The Book of Magic, which includes my story "The Friends of Masquelayne the Incomparable," will be published.
So on we go.

Another sale to F&SF
I’ve sold another Dying Earthish Archonate tale to The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. It’s called “The Prevaricator” and should run sometime next year. It won’t be part of a series, as will be apparent to anyone who reads it all the way to the end.
In the next few days, I’ll prepare my emailed newsletter for November and send it out. If you’re not on the mailing list and would like to be, you can sign up via Instafreebie and also receive a free ebook version of Paroxysm, a thriller written by my crime writing alter ego, Matt Hughes. Here’s a link: https://www.instafreebie.com/book/24407
A reminder: I’ve now got a Patreon account and am grateful to the 32 people who have signed up to support my work by making a monthly contribution. If you’d like to join the crowd, here’s where to go: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=4687520

New Instafreebie giveaway
I'm starting another Instafreebie giveaway, this time giving away up to a thousand copies of my thriller, PAROXYSM. Here's the blurb:
Mad as Hell – and Loving It!
Ruthless mercenaries, hired by an ex-Pentagon chemical-weapons designer turned rogue, take over a small town in Oregon. The plan: use the citizenry as guinea pigs in a test-run of a bootlegged bio-agent for an Islamist terror organization.
But something goes wrong and the mercs and their clients find themselves surrounded by townsfolk who have turned into hyper-coordinated killing machines.
PAROXYSM is an action-packed tale about the seductive power of righteous violence, about how ordinary people can explode when fate gives them the power to hit back.
For a free ebook in epub, mobi, or pdf format, go here.
The catch: you'll be automatically signed up for my monthly newsletter, but you can always cancel and keep the book.

George R.R. Martin recommends me
Came across this on George R.R. Martin's Not a Blog.
"Today is. . . publication day for THE BOOK OF SWORDS . . . There's an impressive table of contents, including brand new stories by giants of the genre like Robin Hobb, Ken Liu, the criminally underrated Matthew Hughes, Scott Lynch, Daniel Abraham, Cecelia Holland, Lavie Tidhar, and many more."
So I'm one of the "giants of the genre," and "criminally underrated," according to George. From his lips to the readers' ears.
Patreon says I should keep reminding people that I now have a Patreon account. So consider yourself reminded. Here's a link:

Doing an Ask Me Anything on reddit.com/r/fantasy
On Thursday, this week, I’m going to be participating in an Ask Me Anything event on the reddit.com/r/fantasy discussion group to promote The Book of Swords.
In case you’ve missed my several mentions of it, The Book of Swords, is a new anthology edited by Gardner Dozois that was officially published today and is already ranked number nine in fantasy anthologies on Amazon. The consensus of critics is that it’s going to be one of the top sff anthos of the year.
The AMA launches late morning, Central Time. I’m right now on UK time (about six hours later) so I’ll probably connect about then and be available for a few hours, if anyone wants to ask me anything. If you’re not already a member of reddit.com/r/fantasy, it takes only seconds to join the group.
In other news, my Patreon page has attracted more than two dozen Heroes of the Archonate since I launched it five days ago. If you’d like to join the ranks of heroes, here’s where to go:

Two good reviews
Over the last 24 hours, my 2016 novel, A Wizard's Henchman, has attracted five-star reviews from two highly knowledgeable sources. I thought that was worth crowing about.
Stephen Theaker, administrator of the British Fantasy Awards, says, "A brilliant book, probably my favourite new book of 2016."
Full review.
And sf novelist David Gullen says, "If you enjoy the works of the great Jack Vance (and I do), then there is a very good chance you will like this book a lot. Hughes writes a very close pastiche of Vance’s mannered, witty and slightly baroque style. His humour is dry, his observations mordant."
