Oswego Pete

When I was looking for the traits that the characters in LOOKING FOR THE EASY LIFE would have, my search led me to the Fundacion Santuario de Osa in Costa Rica, a place where injured wild animals are rescued and brought back to health. This little Howler Monkey and I bonded right away, and he became part of the inspiration for Oswego Pete. Poor little guy was hurt, just like Pete.

Uh-Freddie, from Looking For
The Easy Life

When I was deciding how the characters would look, I stumbled across the photo to the left of a Colobus Monkey. I loved his world-weary expression and thought he would make a good chief monkey. I imagined that it must get tiresome dealing with the likes of Oswego Pete and all the trouble he leads everyone into. Below you can see how he looked in the final version

Looking For The Easy Life, by Walter Dean Myers, was released this week. I'd been working on the illustrations for the past three years, so I was really looking forward to this day. So far it's being received well — good reviews and strong sales. Thank you readers!

When a new book comes out I like to take a little time looking back at all the sketches that went into its' creation. I'll be sharing some of them here. This is from the monkey's journey back home.
