Pierce Brosnan as Louis XIV

This is an official BVC shiny alert!

We now have photographic evidence! That is Pierce Brosnan on that lovely white horse as he plays Louis Quatorze in the movie adaptation ofVonda McIntyre’s bookTHE MOON and the SUN.

In case you missed the initial post, the Screen Daily wrote:

POETS Day: Masks

Mask Shop in Venice

Mask Shop in Venice

We are all mask-makers.

Fear teaches us the art,

And time holds them up for us to dance among,

Changing our faces

To face other gazes.

In saints and bodhisattvas

They disappear.

Some masks are

Gauzy,

Thin.

But more are darkling thick, encrusted with past pain,

Obscuring us from others

And others from us.

For the backs of such masks are mirrors.

Writing Retreat, Part 2: Two Views of My Novel

Last Friday I wrote about my recent writing retreat on Cape Cod. I have a few more thoughts that I’d like to share. Today’s is mostly visual.

Every day I was there, I took a beach walk. I found this rock on the first day of my retreat, a sea-scoured nugget of quartz. It seemed to me a perfect metaphor for my first draft: a gem (or crystal, anyway) in the rough, all of its facets and inner beauty temporarily concealed. I probably won’t polish the crystal, but I will polish the novel. In fact, w...

Legal Fictions: Why Is the Alliance Evil?

SerenityI just watched Serenity again. I’m a huge Joss Whedon fan, and while I would have preferred 8 years of Firefly to a movie – I love good serial storytelling – Serenity is an excellent movie.

Unlike the recent Veronica Mars movie, it isn’t just a continuation of the show for the benefit of the fans but a real telling of the underlying story in a way that fits the constraints of the big screen.

But on this viewing I got to thinking about how the Alliance is portrayed as both monolithic and evil –...

GARMENT OF SHADOWS by Laurie King. I have an odd relationship with this series – I read the first one, THE BEEKEEPER’S APPRENTICE, before it even came out – I got hold of a copy from the publisher and started jumping up and down saying “we need...

#Watched100times: Lost loved movies

 roly poly fish heads

roly poly fish heads

This more properly should be called “I would have watched it 100 times.” I saw each of these movies once, and fell so madly in love that I have never forgotten them.

Sometimes I think I step into these wormholes where only I and half a dozen other crazies get to see a film…and then it vanishes forever.

Diamond Brides or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Baseball

Perfect Pitch by Mindy KlaskyReader, I married a baseball fan.

To be clear: My husband doesn’t just enjoy baseball. He doesn’t just appreciate a beer and a dog and nine innings on a hot summer night.

My husband participates in a fantasy baseball league that drafts an entire team roster – down to the 25th man. My husband remembers specific plays from games that he watched – live or on TV – more than a decade ago. My husband was politely asked not to continue participating in a trivia game at the Baseball Hall of Fame becaus...
