Legal Fictions: Reinventing Law — and Lawyers

Legal FictionsLegal Hackers. That’s two words I never expected to see together. And no, it’s not about people who have figured out legal ways to get their hands on your password.

It’s people who are bringing law into the modern digital world. Here’s how they describe themselves:

Legal Hackers is a global movement of lawyers, policymakers, technologists, and academics who explore and develop creative solutions to some of the most pressing issues atthe intersection of law and technology. …

We are explorers. We...

BVC Eats: Intense fresh mushroom soup

dried shiitake mushrooms as found in Asian grocery stores

dried shiitake mushrooms as found in Asian grocery stores

This is a thick, rich soup like canned mushroom soup on gourmand steroids. More of everything. More flavor, more butter, more cream, more mushrooms!

For dried mushrooms, I use the dried shiitake mushrooms found in Asian food stores, but sometimes I also dry white mushrooms myself. Tips for drying white mushrooms:

put a scant handful of white mushrooms in an open cardboard box or their original foam carton
put the open container in the vege...

WWW Wednesday

WWW Wednesday. This meme is from shouldbereading.

To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?

• What did you recently finish reading?

• What do you think you’ll read next?

• What are you currently reading?

Mansfield Park by Jane Austen – Working my way through Austen again. This is probably her least accessible title to modern audiences, because some of the issues she addresses aren’t really relevant to...

Remembering what it’s all about… (GISHWHES, mid-way through)

I was going to write, in needfully-vague terms, about all the Awesome and wildly creative Stuff we’ve been doing. But sadly, GISHWHES hit a very public bump on Monday. And I think we need to talk about it.

Part of the entire idea of a scavenger hunt is finding things, and getting people to help you find (or do) those things. And GISHWHES has always embraced that – we reach out to people we know, and people who know people we know, and often utter strangers.

(That’s how I ended up getting friend...

Keeping The Faith, or Can You Change Your Name Without Selling Your Soul?

I wrote this essay in 1997, when the world of publishing was very different from what it is today. Back then, who could have anticipated the revolution in epublishing and the way it has given rise to self-publishing and independent publishers. Upon reflection, however, I think it’s worth considering. Let me know what you think!

Many recent articles in newsletters, magazines and websites describe the dire state of publishing and the difficulties which writers face in order to break in, let alon...

Piper in the Night by Dave SmedsPiper in the Night

by Dave Smeds

Dennis Short thought his tour of duty was over…but now he has stepped into another war.

Short, a Navy medical corpsman stationed in Hawaii after his ordeal in Vietnam, is looking forward to his two-week excursion to the island of Kahoolawe. He’s there as the medic for a team of forward observers whose job is to coordinate the bombing, strafing, and shelling of the island’s massive target ranges. All he expects to do besides watching the fireworks is work on his t...

Forward

Riding the Rocket“Forward” is a big buzzword in certain equestrian circles. It’s a technical term for particular kind of movement on the horse’s part, in which the horse is sufficiently balanced and energized to carry itself and its rider (or pull a vehicle or work in hand or on the long rein or…) with ease, grace, and consistency.

It doesn’t even or always mean forward movement, either. A horse can have a forward halt in which all its parts come together and it halts square, with all four feet under it and th...
