Meg Lanning leads the way as Australia clean sweep Women’s Ashes ODIs

England 163; Australia 164-2 (36.2 overs)Australia captain’s half-century seals eight-wicket win

Australia’s women finished a clean sweep of the one-day matches concluding the multiformat Ashes series, winning the third ODI by eight wickets to ensure that England finished winless on tour. A total of 163 was passed by Australia in 36.2 overs, with the old firm of Meg Lanning and Ellyse Perry unbeaten after 90 runs together. In a final series points tally of 12-4, England’s points came from two 20-over matches that were rained off and Canberra’s last-gasp Test match draw.

England attempted a shake-up, leaving out opener Lauren Winfield-Hill, middle-order bat Sophia Dunkley, and in-form bowler Kate Cross to make room for squad players Emma Lamb, Tash Farrant and Freya Davies, with Danni Wyatt moving up from No7 to accommodate the latter two bowlers. Given her team’s previous innings of 129 after being sent in, there was boldness in Heather Knight’s decision to bat first. On the same Junction Oval surface in Melbourne, at the same 10am, she looked like a captain determined to make her charges take on a challenge and rectify their mistakes.

Women’s Ashes 2022 third ODI: Australia thrash England by eight wickets – as it happened

England 163; Australia 164-2 (36.2 overs)Meg Lanning’s half century steers hosts to comfortable win

4th over: England 2-1 (Beaumont 2, Knight 0) If the idea of England batting first here was to learn from mistakes, they’re not so far. Knight faces out an over from Perry, defending. Three overs in a row without a run. You can’t just let Australia bowl at you like this, same as England did last time around.

3rd over: England 2-1 (Beaumont 2, Knight 0) Six dot balls from Schutt to Beaumont, the batter just blocking her way through to make sure nothing further goes wrong.

Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 day three – as it happened

Schedule and live results | Live medal table standings‘I have no more tears’: Games hit by athlete complaints

Here’s a line from the US figure skating team. For context, Zhou is the only skater to have beaten the juggernaut that is Nathan Chen in the last four years.

“As part of yesterday’s regular COVID-19 screening, Vincent Zhou tested positive. Under the guidance of the USOPC medical staff, Zhou is undergoing additional testing to confirm his status. If the results are negative, Zhou will be able to compete in the men’s short program, which begins Tuesday. At this time, we ask you respect his privacy as we await the results.”

Australia win Women’s Ashes series after miserable England batting display

England 129; Australia 131-5 – Australia win by five wicketsHosts take 10-4 lead in the series with one ODI remaining

Australia strolled to victory in the second one-day international of the women’s Ashes, winning the overall series with a game to spare having retained the trophy in the previous outing. Until this point England had provided a good contest, but on Sunday were rolled for a paltry 129 after being sent in to bat at Melbourne’s Junction Oval and bowled out in 42.5 overs. Australia chased the score five wickets down in with nearly 15 overs to spare.

This was Australia’s first Ashes win at home in the multi-format style that combines 50-over, 20-over and Test cricket. Charlotte Edwards led England to a win in 2013-14, and Heather Knight’s 2017 team tied: the Australians went large on celebrations after retaining the trophy, only for England to win the final two matches. The same scenario was possible this time, England trailing 4-8 on points with two games to play, but none of the Australian players or staff from last time had forgotten that frustration. History never looked a chance to repeat.

Australia beat England by five wickets in second ODI to win Women’s Ashes – as it happened

England were rolled for a paltry 129 after being sent in to bat at Melbourne’s Junction Oval, before the hosts took victory

5th over: England 17-1 (Winfield-Hill 9, Knight 1) A couple of singles, Knight off the mark, then Winfield-Hill lays into a shot through cover from Schutt for four.

4th over: England 11-1 (Winfield-Hill 4) What a catch from Healy! The over starts good off-drive as Beaumont sees a fuller length from Perry, down the ground and beating the dive at mid off. Perry responds with a good yorker that Beaumont can only block out. The key point is a wide, giving Perry a seventh delivery. And she uses that to hit a perfect length, seam away, and given how hard Beaumont has to go at the ball defensively from that high backlift, her edge flies to Healy’s right. The keeper flies away, takes the ball just, just, in the webbing of the right glove, then she tucks that arm in so the ball can’t be jarred free, and uses her left arm to brace her fall and roll over.

Australia beat England in first ODI to retain Women’s Ashes – as it happened

Australia went into the first ODI leading 6-4 in the series and beat England by 27 runs to seal the Ashes

Read Geoff Lemon’s report

4th over: Australia 13-1 (Healy 9, Lanning 0) Healy races down to the striker’s end while the ball is in the air, so Lanning doesn’t have to face immediately. Healy sees out the rest of the over.

Gone! Another one to the top edge, after so many wickets fell that way in the Test match. A bit short from Shrubsole, and Haynes likes to pull off a length so she’s very happy to pull that one from just above waist height. She mistimes it though and it lobs up for the wicketkeeper.

Australia bowlers skittle out England in first ODI to retain women’s Ashes

Brilliant bowling gives hosts victory with five overs to spareAustralia 205-9; England 178 all out

Australia retained the women’s multi-format Ashes trophy in the first of three one-day internationals, holding England short of a paltry first innings of 205 for nine to win by 27 runs in Canberra. After captain Heather Knight won the toss and chose to bowl, England’s seam attack used a lively surface to suffocate Australia’s scoring until wickets came. But the Australian bowlers responded in kind, turning the screw until the thread squeaked, and despite a last-wicket partnership of 24 that briefly threatened a revival, England were 178 all out with five overs to go.

Knight said: “Our mentality in this series has been really good. We haven’t been able to quite get over the line, which is a shame, but we believe we’re good enough to beat them and we’ve gone toe-to-toe with them in a lot of aspects, but we just haven’t quite been able to have that killer instinct and get over the line.”
