New Audio Book For You
Hi Friends, Do you enjoy listening to audio books? I’m happy to announce the audio version of No Journey Too Far released today! The narrator, Colleen Pendergast, did an excellent job bringing the story to life and giving the characters unique voices.
Even if you’ve already read the book, listening to the story is an enjoyable experience! I have my iPad set up in my kitchen, and I often listen to a book while I’m cooking or cleaning up. Sometimes I’m so into the story I have to clean out drawers and organize shelves so I can keep listening! I also like to listen when I’m out walking or on a longer drive. Listening to a book makes the time fly.
Audible offers a free 30-day trial membership. That’s a fun and free way to hear your first audio book. Then, if you enjoy listening, you can continue with a monthly plan. Here’s the link for more info about the free trial.
Many libraries also offer audio books as a part of their collection. Check with your local library to see what’s available, and request No Ocean Too Wide and No Journey Too Far if they don’t have them yet.

Honoring Husbands and Fathers
Hi Friends, This Sunday we’ll be celebrating Father’s Day, and I’ll be remembering some very special men in my life. I was blessed to grow up in a home where my dad, Bob Swain, showed me a lot of love. And when I married, I added another dad in my life, my father-in-law, John Turansky. Both of these men have had a profound impact on me, and I have been blessed to be their daughter. When Scott and I had children, I was grateful to see my husband was a loving father to our five children, and now he is a wonderful grandfather to our seven grandchildren.
Bob Swain was just about the sweetest guy you could ever meet. He was soft-spoken and kind, yet also strong and determined, and best of all, he was a man of his word. Born in 1920, Bob grew up during the depression and had his first job, selling apples from a wagon, when he was eight. As a teenager he ran track, did the pole vault, and became interested in airplanes and skiing. When he was 21 Pearl Harbor was attacked, and he joined the Army Air Corp. He fought in the Pacific during WW2, and he told some very chilling stories of dangerous situation and close calls.
After the war her returned to Portland, Oregon, where he married my mother, Dorothy Brown, and started his life as a husband and father. He worked for the Union Pacific Railway and volunteered as an officer in Civil Air Patrol, teaching teens about aviation and search and rescue. He also enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing, and often took the family along on these adventures.
My dad never let a holiday pass without buying a card or small gift to show he cared. Ever watchful, he kept a good eye on me and my brother Mark and made sure we were safe and protected. Dad was an honorable man from the greatest generation. He went on to heaven in 1986, and I still miss him. I am looking forward to a great reunion with him and my mom one day.
My father-in-law, John Turansky was an energetic pastor who planted several churches and discipled believers for almost 50 years. He memorized hundreds of verses of Scripture and preached countless sermons. But even more than all those things, I remember the fun family times we shared with him. He loved to play games, especially backgammon and card games. He also enjoyed traveling and liked to take his kids and grand kids on adventures. He is wise and thrifty, often saying things like: “Do your homework before you spend any money.” And, “Turn off the lights.” He also loved to share practical advice with young people: “You don’t fall in love – you fall down stairs. You plan your love life.” And, “You’ve got to marry someone who is going places.” His most famous saying was added to all his sermons, encouraging us to apply what we’d heard: “So what— How does this apply to me?”
John was always a great encouragement and support to us as we raised our children. His impact on our children’s lives cannot be measured. He invested love, time, and attention on each one, often making cards and booklets by cutting out photos from magazines to create funny stories or to illustrate Bible verses or topics. Even though he lived in Hawaii for many years, he would make the long journey to New Jersey to see his grandkids on a regular basis. John went home to be with the Lord after a stroke slowed him down for quite a few years. When I remember John, I think of faithfulness, devotion to God and family, humor and creativity. We still miss him very much.
My husband, Scott, is a great dad and husband. He has a heart to help other dads and spends a great deal of his time counseling, writing, and encouraging dads and moms to love their children and raise them to love and serve the Lord. Even though our children are grown, he communicates with them all regularly and invests time with them and our grandkids. I admire his commitment to family and his devotion to God and His word. That has given him the ability to offer practical advice that blesses me, our family, and many others!
What about father’s in fiction? As I was thinking back through the novels I’ve written, the most memorable father figure was Dr. Foster, Julia’s father, from The Governess of Highland Hall. As a medical missionary to India he cared for the physical and spiritual needs of the people there as well as his family. When poor health made him return to England it was a difficult adjustment, but his faith and love for his family helped him make that transition and continue serving the Lord in new ways. I loved weaving his story in with his daughter Julia, in the first book, and then with his son Jon, who is the hero in the second book in the series, The Daughter of Highland Hall. British Home Children Come of Age
Hi Friends, those who have read my novels, No Ocean Too Wide and No Journey Too Far, are often surprised to learn that British Home Children continued to face challenges and hardships when they finished their indentured contracts and became young adults. Even those who were accepted into a family and were well treated often had to overcome prejudice and mistrust in the community. This motivated some adult British Home Children to keep the events of their early life a secret, even from their own family, and that put a strain their relationships.
Challenges For Those Coming of Age
When I did my research for No Ocean Too Wide, I focused on young children and how they were impacted by leaving England and starting a new life in Canada. But the more personal accounts I read, I realized they continued to face difficulties when they came of age and had to set out on their own. That motivated me to write the second McAlsiter Family novel, No Journey Too Far. I wanted to explore the difficulties British Home Children faced in their young adult years. I decided to follow the McAlister family and set the story ten years later. Then I asked myself, how would they overcome the separation and hardships? What would their lives be like? How would they take on new challenges as young adults?
Young Men Join the Military
Many of the young men enlisted the military during World War One and World War Two, looking for acceptance and a way to overcome the stigma of being a British Home Child. Joining up to fight gave them a cause, a band of brothers, and for some, it provided a way to return to England so they could search for their family members on the way to and from the front.
Reading Personal Accounts
I was deeply touched when I read personal accounts and listened to interviews recorded by British Home Children. Many went on to build stable careers and strong families, overcoming great obstacles and healing from the painful experiences of their childhood and separation from their family. Several mentioned their faith in God as a foundation that helped them take on new responsibilities and relationships. But some carried those painful experiences inside for the rest of their lives, suffering in silence and passing on the pain to the next generation.
I hope you’ll enjoy reading No Journey Too Far and learning about Garth’s return from World War One and his search for his missing sweetheart, Emma, who was also a British Home Child. You’ll also finally learn what happened to Grace, the youngest McAlister sibling, and see if she will leave her sheltered life in Toronto to reconnect with her family.

Launch Week for No Journey Too Far
Hi Friends, It’s launch week for No Journey Too Far, and I want to invite you to join the celebration! Read on to learn about times we can connect and some special giveaways! It’s been almost two years since the release of No Ocean Too Wide. That book focused on what happened to Garth, Katie, and Grace McAlister when they were taken away from England and sent to Canada as British Home Children. Their sister, Laura, was determined to follow them across the Atlantic, find her siblings, and reunite the family. That book concludes with Grace missing and Garth legally bound to finish his indentured contract in Canada.
I intended to tell the rest of the story in the second book, No Ocean Too Wide, that was scheduled to release in 2020. But in February 2019 I received a colon cancer diagnosis, and that made writing very difficult. So the book was delayed while I took several months off to rest and recover from surgery and chemo treatments. I’m grateful to be doing well, and I’ve had clear checkups since then. I’m sure you can see why the release of this book is especially meaningful to me.
So . . . let the celebration begin! I’d love to connect with you and share more about the story behind No Journey Too Far. It’s set ten years after No Ocean Too Wide and focuses on the challenges and experiences the McAlister siblings and their friends face as they finished their indentured contracts and set out on their own.

Behind the Cover Design for No Journey Too Far
Hi Friends, I come from a family of artists, including my mom, Dorothy Swain, and my grandfather, Ed Brown. When I was young, my mom put a paintbrush in my hand and encouraged me to use my creativity. I don’t paint or draw often now, instead I channel my creativity into writing, flower arranging, and creating a peaceful and pretty home. But I do use some of my artistic skills to create images for book promotion, to share my faith, and to offer encouragement. When it’s time to create a new cover for one of my books, I enjoy putting on my artist’s hat.
It Takes a Team
There are several people who are involved in creating my book covers. I’m grateful my publishing team invites me to be involved in the process. The first step is for me to share information about the story and characters and give design suggestions. I send those, along with images from my Pinterest book board, to my editor, and she shares them with the design team.
No Journey Too Far is the sequel to No Ocean Too Wide. We wanted to the covers to be similar, but to also look unique. The designer was able to accomplish that by choosing the same basic layout, with two people and a mode of transportation, as well as using the same font for the title. The designer made it different than No Ocean Too Wide by using an opposite color scheme and showing the couple as adults rather than children, and showing the train instead of the ship.

These are the preliminary designs that were considered. They used the working title, A Promise to Keep, which was eventually changed to No Journey Too Far.
My editor liked the first design on the left, but I thought the man and woman looked older than my characters, and I didn’t sense much of an emotional connection between them. I liked the next cover, but the couple looked like a brother and sister, and I wanted to show the idea of romance with the couple.
