Volunteer – daily prompt

Bullets don’t whip or crack and they certainly don’t whistle. You never hear the one that hits you but when they’re flying, you know they’re there. They’re like hot metal hailstones and they can hit you anywhere, hiding in a hole or around a corner. And I’m here, a volunteer?

Millions – 2fer!

First, let me ask if anyone else has had the same experience as me tonight? I’ve posted three posts to this blog and each has appeared with a ‘view post’ notice but then disappeared? The freaky thing was mine is the same 50 word story, over and over, could become millions.

This is the original.

All writers worry about the words they write, about whether the spelling is correct, is the word used in the correct context, the shape and form of the words and are they apposite and appropriate? The greatest fear, unspoken, is whether those words, millions or a few, have lasting meaning.

Millions

Writers worry about words they write, how they’re spelled and arranged, their shape, form and meaning but most of all – and this is a secret fear shared by all, but rarely spoken – the number they can write, even if it’s millions, that will have an impact and meaning that lasts.

Ancient

He couldn’t understand what she saw in him, with his hipster beard, his infuriating, post pony tail, knot of hair and a short, back and sides straight out of Edwardian trenches, his plus four style cycle pants and his High Nelly, painted matt black. Because at twenty five, he’s ancient.

Underground – Daily Post Prompt

In this world, being white isn’t easy. You have to watch what you say and never too loudly, avoid making eye contact and only speak when you’re spoken to. They own and control everything, behave like they own you. It could be worse, you know, if there was no underground.

Digging Through the Archives of Scarfolk, the Internet’s Creepiest Fake Town

Haunted TV shows, surveillance owls, liver-based children’s toys—nothing is too weird for Scarfolk.
by Cara Giaimo

Let’s take a moment to explain the picture above. In 1978, the town of Scarfolk, in northwest England, cut its police budget in half. This drastic measure was followed by a wave of violent crime. To deal with the influx of dead bodies, the remaining police did the obvious thing—they teamed up with the “Keep Britain Tidy” campaign, and encouraged citizens, especially children, to pick up “victim debris” themselves.

Trump is already building a wall in Ireland, and the story behind it is ridiculous.

The Lodge at Doonbeg is one of the most highly praised resorts in Europe.

by Thom Dunn (UPWORTHY)

It attracts visitors from across the globe for its scenic views of Ireland’s Atlantic coast and, most importantly, for its celebrated golf course.

Since February 2014, the resort has been owned by Trump International, who scooped it up after the previous owners reportedly became unable to afford the necessary repairs from a particularly harsh winter.

“We’re going to reshape it and make it one of the greatest golf courses in the world,” Trump said at the time.read more

Waiting

She met him on a chatline, y’know, like one of those ones where people just say shit like they’re tossing stones in a pond to see who the ripples touch? He was depressed, she could tell. So she asked him, like, what do you do? And he said, I’m waiting.

Reporting can be a riot…?

Not in North Dakota, apparently, despite the best efforts of North Dakota District Attorney, Ladd R. Erickson who, first tried to charge journalist Amy Goodman with trespass but when that was dropped, said she’d be charged with riot. Is Mr Ladd insane?

By his own logic, Amy Goodman’s hugely effective job of reporting the violent assault on protestors at Standing Rock turned her from a journalist to a protester. Now the riot charges have been dropped. But seriously, WTF?read more
