Toddlers as Teachers

My two favorite toddlers, Lucy and Emmy, are about to leave after a weeklong visit. They have kept us on our toes, worn us out, given us colds, and caused us to redecorate our house – with everything that used to be on lower shelves now moved way up high. They have taught me that it's easier to be a grandparent than a parent, to always pack cheerios for the car, and to look at everything in terms of kid-friendliness. I promise to never take silence for granted again and have added Automobile DVD Players under Wheeled Luggage on my all-time list of greatest inventions.

The girls understand two languages but speak more Spanish than English. Consequently, they have taught me lots of words this week. I can now say "Look!", "All gone!", "What's that?", and "Do it again!" in Spanish - universal phrases for toddlers. But the word I love hearing them speak the most is "Nana" and I will miss hearing it in their cute little voices.
