READING HIGHLIGHTS: 5 AWESOME THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE CHILDREN’S BOOKS OF ARNOLD LOBEL AND PAUL R STANTON by Zea Perez
I am never happier than when reading children’s books. Before I become an author and a book reviewer of all book genres, I was and still is an avid reader of children’s literature. When I am at a bookstore, a library or a friend’s house with a bookshelf, my eyes will straight away be drawn towards the children’s books and their vibrant illustrations!
This time, I will share with you two authors of children’s books that totally captures my heart because of their captivating stories and illustrations, lovable and funny characters and a bunch of meaningful life lessons that will absolutely bring joy to children, parents, caregivers, minders, teachers, and everyone alike!
I am sure most of us are familiar with the books of Arnold Lobel - Frog and Toad, Lucille, among others! He shines out, starting in the 70’s right up until now! Of course, I will introduce you to Paul R Stanton, an admirable, contemporary author - the creator of the Smileymoos!
Both authors illustrate their own books. Their illustrations on each page are alive, the kind of things you would love to behold all day long and just be having your treat of daily joy! While most of the colours chosen by Arnold Lobel are of earth colours, duo-chromatic and subdued, Paul R Stanton’s are of bright, sunny, vibrant and heart-warming tints!
Arnold Lobel’s lovable characters are based on various animals you will see on the cottage farms such as pigs, horse, frog and toad, and birds, among others. On the other hand, Paul R Stanton’s Smileymoo characters are inspired mainly from the ants who do their own things day in and out we don’t usually notice! However, both of the author’s characters are relatable! They embody and mirror human nature as having flaws, having ups and downs in life and yet keep on thriving, learning and just keep on exploring the adventures and journey in the course of life.
The settings of both books are also wonderful. They are based on relatable villages and towns. Paul R Stanton’s Smileymoo town is called ‘Tucked Away’ where there are greenery and city like places. While Arnold Lobel’s has the countryside feels and towns with shops alike. They make their settings so alive and real as the tales of their books progress.
Both authors' books are told in light-hearted, funny and simple narratives! They are rhythmical when read aloud! My nephews and nieces keep on giggling, smiling and in wide open eyes as I read, flip the pages and the stories and illustrations unfold before their eyes!

Most of all, I am very impressed with the meaningful lessons both the books try to impart to the children and to all. They are many to mention but I highlight the following: acceptance and appreciation of one’s unique true self; humility to accept one’s flaws or fault and be happy to make an effort to make amends; to empathize with others’ feelings and hard situation; kindness and compassion to those who are in need and forgotten; friendship and what it takes to have friends; healthy eating habits; how to face bullying; being just a kid and exploring the world around even when it is sometimes becoming messy and dirty however there is learning, life experience and wisdom!

There’s no denying that Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James published in 2012 gave rise to erotic romance books and lifted it to its present pedestal. In the past, erotic romance genre was regarded as low- brow literature.
However, after FIFTY SHADES OF GREY publication and its success, there is a semblance of acceptance and openness! Paving the way on erotic romance books to reach a broader readership and active, open discussions about human sexual fantasies, desires, motivations, obsession and more significantly facing issues concerning human-sexual relationships.
People worldwide, in various gender and sexual orientation trooped into cinemas to watch the film version of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY. This young adult, fiction novel touches the many important concerns such as growing up and coming of age without the care of biological parents; mental health, bullying, young adult relationships, parent or guardian and children’s relationships, the pros and cons of social media and online engagement and hazards, young adult friendship, the coming of age-discovering and establishing one’s character and identity; shaping and achieving one’s dream of what to become in the future; among others.
The author’s narratives are written in such a light-hearted fashion for a reader to easily digest. Though I am aware that in real life these concerns and circumstances that Lily, the protagonist is into - aren’t easy and could be full of drama and tears.
This book is both significant and a pleasure to read especially for young adults and parents as well. Lots of realistic scenes and circumstances to enjoy and could be a take-off discussion and learnings of how situations are to be viewed, handled, and managed in this current time.

Another endearing, poignant, wonderfully written prose from sir Paul R Stanton!
The content of the book is so relevant, colorful, full of London's underrated if not forgotten historical sites or landmarks and I have many peals of laughter reading, especially in the chapter where the Angel of Death has a profound banter with the Devil!
The book poignantly reflects life realities and it offers relief - a 'kindness' done by the Devil himself! Yes, it takes a Devil to show real kindness to the world during this very season of Christmas!
I so hope and wish that the 'Festive Series' of Paul R Stanton shall become a motion picture or a telly series soon! A wonderful thing to behold on the big screen!
Highly recommended, everyone will absolutely love reading this book! A wonderful gift to give for all seasons!

This book is very unique! A fantasy, deeply grounded by life realities.
The old saying ‘Don’t judge the book by its cover!’ is the very essence of the main character –
the protagonist of the novel – who is the ‘Devil’. He is on the loose during the Yuletide Season for a mission. I'm thinking the Devil would do the evil, cliche things. However, in this book, expect the unexpected!
Sometimes, I laughed, smiled, and was in tinkering mode while reading the chapters and snippets of the book. There are familiar characters employed by the author that surely would amuse any reader. Truly, the author is a huge fan of Dante Alighieri’s ‘The Inferno’.
The book touches on the issues, concerns, and circumstances of the many facets of social ills as expressed by the snippets of the book such as poverty; homelessness; unemployment; criminality; and domestic and individual problems such as family misunderstanding; individual depression, transgression, addiction, and hopelessness.
However, each snippet of the book, also shows a heart of compassion, and kindness, how to be just, the act of retribution, and holding on to the light and the goodness within the individual which are potent enough to flicker change.
The author’s narratives are interlaced with mystery and in such a conversational manner making them interesting and easy to digest.
The book ends in such a light-hearted course. Thank you, author Paul Stanton! Indeed, this book is very relevant and a pleasurable read at any given time!

This book is both significant and a pleasure to read especially for young adults and parents as well. Lots of realistic scenes and circumstances to enjoy and could be a take-off discussion and learnings of how situations are to be viewed, handled, and managed in this current time.
Overall, congratulations to author John Holmes, the book is very satisfying, relevant and an enjoyable read!
