What the Marriage Equality Decision Looked Like in Puerto Rico

This is a guest post by Sarah Rasher.

Same-sex marriage is now legal in all fifty states, which you all know because of the rainbow images all over your Facebook feed. But U.S. territories saw their laws change on Friday, too, and the cultural and political effects of the decision in those sometimes far-flung parts of America has been tremendous.

Judging from news reports, most of the 3.5 million Americans in Puerto Rico — more U.S. citizens than in Mississippi or Utah — are ecstatic that same...

Anti-Gay Christian Has Questions for Marriage Equality Supporters, But He Doesn’t Care to Hear Your Answers

Samuel James is the Communications Specialist for the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (of the Southern Baptist Convention). The last time we talked about him, he was telling Christians not to call out fellow Jesus-followers when they did something awful/embarrassing because it would hurt the brand.

His most recent post, about the Supreme Court’s gay marriage ruling, is equally pathetic.

Just check out one of the questions:

2) Given that same-sex marriage is legal now, would the loss of c...

It’s Not Too Late to Partake in This Historical Moment!

There’s a widespread and pretty much true idea that everybody of my generation remembers exactly where they were and what they were doing when they first heard that President John Kennedy had been shot. Yes, I do, in vivid detail. My eighth grade English class spelling test was interrupted by the school principal who had come in to tell us the terrible news. The word our teacher had just told us to spell was the word “extraordinary.” I saved that incomplete spelling test with that last word,...

Unvaccinated Child in Spain Dies from Diphtheria

Earlier this month, I posted about a couple in Spain that didn’t get their six-year-old vaccinated even though it would have been free. That child was later admitted to the hospital with diphtheria, which hadn’t been seen in the country since 1986.

See? It’s not that hard.

The parents later said that they were “tricked” by anti-vaccination groups and would have gotten the vaccination if they just had proper information.

But it’s too late now. I’m sorry to say that the child died yesterday mornin...

Stephen Colbert Reacts to the Supreme Court Marriage Decision

Only a few more months until Stephen Colbert is back on the air. In the meantime, we’ll just have to settle for some short videos, like this one reacting to the Supreme Court’s gay marriage ruling:

History moves fast. It’s hard to believe gay Americans achieved full constitutional personhood just five years after corporations did.

Don’t miss the bit about guessing which SCOTUS justices were unhappy with the ruling :)

A Southern Christian Asks for Forgiveness at a Gay Pride Festival

This is perhaps the most touching, non-condescending approach to “Love the sinner, hate the sin” I’ve ever seen.

In Nashville, Tennessee, a Christian showed up at her local Gay Pride festivities to hold up a sign with a message nobody had ever seen before, one of raw humility:

Erika Chambers posted a video of herself sitting in her car this morning, tears in her eyes, explaining how yesterday’s gay marriage ruling had created so much division among her online friends that it prompted a re-evalu...

Watch Matt Dillahunty Explain How to Appropriately Use the Bible in a Debate

In the latest video for his Atheist Debates project, Matt Dillahunty explains how to appropriately quote the Bible during a debate, even if you’re an atheist. (For example, arguing that the Bible says π = 3 isn’t really fair since no Christian believes that’s a proper interpretation.)

I haven’t had a chance to watch the whole thing yet, but if any moments stand out, please leave the timestamp/summary in the comments!

How Did an Evangelical Church Embracing LGBT Members Manage to Upset Just About Everyone?

This is a guest post by Sarah Rasher.

Most American churches seem to fall into one of two categories when it comes to LGBT rights: conservative churches that dig in their heels to defend their bigotry and welcoming ones that build progressive politics into their core beliefs.

But what happens when a Southern church finds itself stuck between these two stereotypes, embracing equality while clinging to its evangelical roots? As part of its Pride Week coverage, the Nashville Scene‘s Kim Green spo...

The Sadness of Bryan Fischer

If you’re ever feeling upset, just bookmark this page and take a stroll through Christian bigot Bryan Fischer‘s Twitter feed from yesterday. So much frustration mixed with pure rage:

Oh, the tears of unfathomable sadness…

Fischer elaborated a little later:

June 26, 2015 is a date which will live in infamy.

It is a day on which behavior which is an abomination in the eyes of a holy God was normalized, promoted, celebrated and imposed on an a nation built on the foundation of the Judeo-Christian tr...
