Billy’s Blanket

Billy’s blanket is one of my favorite things.
He got it as a gift from a friend named Audrey.
Do you like Billy’s blanket as much as I do?
Golly Gee, I sure doubt so.
Billy holds his blanket like Linus holds his.
Yeah, sure, I want it, but it is what it is.
That’s why my air conditioner has frozen over,
Because when Billy happens by the blanket is remembered.

Barleytons Under Intense Scrutinization

A flock of Barleytons were pulled over by the state police for gallivanting about a cucumber that was left over in a stolen Olive Garden salad bowl. According to authorities, the Barleytons were quite upset with several bits of croutons for being unreasonably hard even when doused in Italian dressing. The texture of these “croutons” has been deemed malicious, if not certainly suspicious, due to the cubical pieces of bread trying but failing to hide among bits of lettuce and under shredded cheese. Birds of the same feather may flock together but dressing-drenched croutons among lettuce and cheese surely should not. The case would be closed for that fact alone if not for the missing olives and banana peppers, which are presumed to have been eaten by the flock of Barleytons. However, the Barleytons claim to be innocent of all crimes by reason of pure fabrication. At this time, no one knows if they exist, and if they do, no one knows what they are. More on this later, for now, where is my toothbrush?

Super Mario Brothers

Super Mario Brothers are one of my favorite things.
They hit their head on bricks while running.
Do you like Super Mario Brothers as much as I do?
Golly Gee, I sure hope so.
A firepower flower pops out of a block, a questionable block.
Super Mario brothers throw fiery rocks, fireball rocks!
That’s why I eat plenty of spaghetti and meatballs
So Mario and Luigi can save the princess.

Pretty Little Kitty Kitties

Pretty Little Kitty Kitties are one of my favorite things.
When they meow they are trying to sing.
Do you like pretty little kitty kitties as much as I do?
Golly Gee, I sure hope so.
A big big rainbow goes over my house, way way over my house
When a pretty little kitty kitty chases a mouse, a little little mouse.
That’s why I will have plenty of yarn and cheese
So that my pretty little kitty kitties are happy little kitty kitties.

Bryan Timothy Mitchell Presents: Poor Poetry and Articles from the Subconscious Mind of a Nearly Mad Man

Hello Folks,
It’s been a long time since I’ve done much of anything with this blog thingamabob. Honestly, I’ve never been a fan of the word. Blog sounds Bleg to me. “Hey, wanna read my blog?” “Subscribe to my blog.” “Find out news way in how I pander when you read my blog!” Yuck Face times four to infinity. That’s just not me.

UNTIL NOW!

I have come to understand that I don’t have to blog. I can bleg! Let it be known that from this day, I will bring forth two highly entertaining BLEG series: Poor Poetry and Articles from the Subconscious Mind of a Nearly Mad Man. Get the skinny below and click the buttons to read the first entries! More entries will come in time so subscribe to my newsletter for more.

Poor Poetry

Nobody really knows about my poetic prowess and it is high time that I showcase my special talent in writing the best worst poetry that anyone has ever read. I am moved by many things in this world, to write poetry that is, and I will begin this very important and necessary endeavor by writing a series on my most favorite things in the whole wide world and beyond, and even beyond the beyond, and shall it be necessary, I will go behind the beyond and beyond the behind of the beyond. I’ll stop there so we don’t get too dizzy. First entries include Pretty Little Kitty Kitties and Super Mario Brothers. You’re welcome.

POOR POETRYArticles from the Subconscious Mind of a Nearly Mad Man

Oh, but it’s true! This series of prose will be written in the style of news articles in a stream-of-consciousness manner that will illustrate the pure definition of my very being, I’d apologize in advance but you will have the option to read it or not. I don’t think much genius will come from this but it will be very fun for me. This first entry is titled Barleytons Under Intense Scrutinization. Yes, I know and I did warn you.

Harder to Fly than to Fall

When I set out to write Almost Paradise, I didn’t have a quote for the cover in mind like I did for Infernal Fall. Harder to Fly than to Fall came to me while writing the novel. I love it because it’s proverbial. It’s a simple and true thing to say. Now, I’m not clever enough to come up with this on my own, out of the blue, (or am I? )so I figured I had heard it somewhere before, but when I tried to find where this came from, I came up short. The closest thing I found was how easy it was to become a pilot.

While I can’t pinpoint exactly where this saying came from, I’m certain that it came to me from God. You see, I write with God in mind (My God is the Christian God in case anyone is wondering). God is everything to me and I want my work to be acceptable in His sight. So, when I sit and write, I consider not only what I think would be a good story, I consider the story that God wants others to hear. Stories are full of messages and the message that stood out to me in Infernal Fall and Almost Paradise is that it’s easy to fall into temptation. Only takes a teeny, tiny thought to sin. To fall, in this sense, is to fall spiritually, of course.

What about flying, then? To me, it is a time when there’s a closer-than-usual connection with God going on. In these moments I feel such a strong connection with God that it’s all I can think about, it’s all I can cope with and want for a time. Never do I feel more alive than when I feel this connection. It’s crazy cool. I wish it would happened as often as I felt tempted. Sometimes it hits me out of nowhere; sometimes it sneaks up on me.

Seems like a good time to mention one of these moments.

The first one that comes to mind occurred while I was driving to a university for a day full of classes (I know, so exciting.) I had exams that day and I was running late. I needed to get into the left lane to make it to school on time but a long line of traffic refused, flat out refused to let me over (I’m not the kind of driver to force myself in front of another. See, I am a gentleman!) I tried to slow down and was tailgated and honked at. The other lane didn’t let up anyway. I tried speeding up and that didn’t work either. It was sooo frustrating. The opportunity to turn came and went and I was mad. Out of nowhere, a simple thought occurred to me. There’s another way. That little tidbit put me in the fog of the Holy Spirit for the rest of my day. Yeah, I could still get to school, taking other roads to get there, but that wasn’t the thing that hit me at my core. There was another way “to be”. I didn’t need to let frustration dictate who I was in that moment. I could have easily gone about my day being angry and upset with the world but I chose another way. Honestly, I can’t remember anything from the lessons I learned in class that day but I remembered what I learned in that moment and it sticks with me like nothing else.

There are several of these stories from my life where I felt this strong connection with God. Those are the moments when I fly. Those moments are like paradise. But in this world what goes up must come down (apparently). I eventually returned to Earth. I eventually found myself tempted again. So, it’s harder to fly than to fall but I like to think the reason why is because flying is a special thing. Those moments are moments to remember, to savor, and to share with others. Maybe by doing so, the world can be filled more with the Holy Spirit. In a way, as I write this, I’m feeling the presence. I hope you do, too. And if you do feel it, then by all means share this with someone who you think needs this message now. Don’t hide your light under a bushel. Share it with the world. And share the flights you’ve taken with God.

Stay tuned folks. I have fun things in store. Until next time, fly safe! If you’d like to subscribe to my newsletter or follow me on Goodreads or social media search my name and/or novels and I bet you’ll find me.

Never Lose Hope

This is the cover of Infeernal Fall where the words

On the cover of my debut novel, Infernal Fall, I included a simple tag with a simple message, “never lose hope”. Those familiar with Dante’s Divine Comedy would likely remember the words “abandon all hope all ye who enter” etched on the gates to the Inferno. But what if someone didn’t abandon hope? If we’re in a living hell we shouldn’t give up. That’s one reason why I wanted to write this story, and it is the reason why I have this three-word phrase shown on the cover. So, while this message is a wink to Dante’s work, there is a deeper reason for having it displayed for everyone to see.

It’s a message that we can forget in the darkest points in our lives, and I was on the cusp of cutting it from the cover at one point. My thought was that it gave away the ending. Surely, the protagonist wouldn’t give up hope in the story if the cover states that you shouldn’t. Dante’s titled work, The Divine Comedy, gives away the ending as well (another clever nod, sort of), but the reason why I chose to keep it on the cover was that if someone chose not to read the story, they’d still get a very important message that I wanted to deliver through the story.

This cover won a Realm Award at Realm Makers 2023 in St Louis Missouri. I wanted the publisher to accept the award because I believe they contributed so much to the design. They hired an amazing artist (Damon Freeman) and had a really good understanding of what works for readers. My original idea showed a view of Daniel falling into the Inferno from above the pit (shared below). Their concept won me over. I contributed the title, my name, and this tagline. They even encouraged me to think about keeping the tag when I wasn’t sure about it.

This message is very important for all of us because life isn’t easy. When things aren’t working, we can slip into a defeated state of mind and give up on important things like goals, ideals, friendships and family, even LIFE! Maybe this small reminder is all someone needs to keep persevering through whatever storm they’re going through.

One could push back with the idea that sometimes it’s better to let go of the things that aren’t working. If your business is failing and you’re going bankrupt, maybe you should lose hope in getting it turned around and move on. While that certainly may be the case, the hope of things to come should still be strong in your mind. Change can be difficult, but we shouldn’t let that deter us. Nor should we allow fear to overwhelm us. We were meant to do great things. We can save ourselves and each other by persevering through hardships and remaining hopeful.

What comes to mind when you think about hope? Do you think about desires and goals? An ailing loved one? Do you think about prayer? Do you believe it’s all for naught? If so, I hope you consider the possibilities of what might happen should you challenge yourself to change your mind.

Thanks for reading. On my next blog post, I’ll chat about the tagline for my second book, Almost Paradise: harder to fly than to fall. Subscribe to stay tuned.

FAQ

I entered the giveaway before subscribing, can I still receive the extra entry if I subscribe later?
Yes, I’ll check this each Friday morning to make sure. This also goes for those who plan to take a selfie with a physical copy of the book. Please note that if you know someone who has a physical copy of the book you can take a selfie with that copy and receive the extra entries.

I purchased the ebook. Can I use that in a selfie instead of a physical copy?
You can, but it’ll count as one entry instead of two. Ebooks are only .99 cents on Amazon. The physical copies cost more, which is why I’m offering 2 entries for selfies that include those.

If I share a link to Infernal Fall and include a picture of me holding the book in the same post, do I receive 3 entries?
Yes. Two entries for the selfie. One for sharing the link. However, the selfie can only be used once in this giveaway. Promoting the book once a week can earn you an extra entry each week.

One hundred free copies! How do you eat?
Our hope is that you’ll listen to the audiobook and love it so much that you’ll tell your friends and/or give it an honest review on Goodreads. This gives me and Descendant Publishing more visibility. You’ll be helping other readers discover our works, which is why we offer extra entries if you promote Infernal Fall or me as an author on social media

Can I earn more entries if I promote Infernal Fall multiple times on multiple social media sites?
I considered this and determined that it would be too difficult to keep up with. If 20 people were dedicated enough to promote Infernal Fall once a day for one week That’s 140 posts I have to track. If 200 people did this that would be 1400 posts. I’d be discombobulated. I know this because I already have a difficult enough time keeping up with my glasses, wallet, keys, socks, shoes, pens, and guitar picks. I’m sure I’m leaving something out . . . See what I mean.

Can I earn another entry by posting a review on Goodreads or Amazon?
I feel like this would be unethical. Feel free to review the book if you’ve read it, but I don’t want to sway your opinion in any way. While I do hope that you leave an honest review, rewarding anyone for leaving a review is not how I’d like to earn it. If my work delights readers, then I feel they will feel compelled to share their thoughts. If it’s on the other end of the spectrum, then I feel readers would feel compelled to share that. If they are indifferent, they may not review it or rate it. So in short, I think only the story should influence a review. Then again, did I secretly plant an idea in your head with this frequently asked question that hasn’t been asked yet?

What are some links I can share to earn a promotional entry?
I list some promotional links along with links to my social media pages below. I’ll also share options in the contest winner announcement email each Friday to make it easier for you. Check your spam folder if you do not receive it.

How will I know if I win?
We will send an email out to all the participants each Friday to announce winners. They may choose to remain anonymous. All winners will receive a direct email from me that will include the link to the audiobook file. This will continue until July 7th. If you receive no email from me on Friday, you should check your spam folder. If it’s not in there contact me via email (bryan@bryantimothymitchell.com)

Bummer, I already bought the audiobook, I guess I can bow out of this one.
Hold your horses there, feller. Just by entering, you’ll be notified when the Infernal Fall and Almost Paradise ebooks are free. Besides, if you win you are welcome to forward the audiobook to anyone you like, and we all love the joyful feeling that comes through giving, at least I hope we do; please, tell me that feeling isn’t indigestion.

How will I receive the audiobook if I win?
We will email a code to you. This code will allow you to download the audiobook on Spotify at no cost, which means you’ll have to take a few seconds to download Spotify if it’s not already on whatever device you’re using. Setting up an account is free and painless as well. This will be a one-time use link.

Spotify? Why Spotify and not Audible?
We chose to distribute Infernal Fall through a wide distribution rather than exclusively with Audible. This opened the door for this promotional opportunity which benefits you, me, and Spotify. If you are subscribed to Audible, you can use your freebie on another title and enjoy Infernal Fall through Spotify at no extra cost to you. By doing this, you create more competition in the market which benefits all consumers of audiobooks. (I aced economics in school. I have the transcript somewhere, but as I said, I struggle to find my own socks most days so you’ll have to take my word on it. Or search it on DuckDuckGo, Bing, Google, or at your local library. Lookie there, I’m still promoting competition!)

I’m an author too. Can we cross-promote?
I’d love to. Even if you have no subscribers or newsletter, I’m totally game. I will not promote erotica though. If there is cursing, excessive violence, and/or mature themes, please let me know ahead of time.

I’ve been following you for a long time and have been waiting for The Dark Night and The Chance Chronicles. When do you plan to release those?
I’m so glad you asked. I’ve just finished the rough draft of Almost Paradise and have turned my focus to The Dark Night, which will have a new name. Expect the first edition of that on March 17th. The Chance Chronicles will start to emerge over the summer.

Woah there! What about Almost Paradise? If you just finished the rough draft, when will it be out?
I’ll be editing and rewriting Almost Paradise for a few more months and expect it to be ready by mid to late Fall.

Who is eligible to participate?
Everyone is eligible. I personally will not be entering my name to win because that would be silly.

What are my chances of winning?
If all of my current subscribers were to enter and do nothing else the chances of winning are 1 in 5. Not all of my subscribers open the newsletter each month which means if you enter early you have a better chance of winning. Those who enter early and promote will improve their chances over time. New Year’s Resolutions Prohibit Revolution

If you’re looking to make changes in your life, you may not want to start right away. There is this thing in our heads that tells us we can wait. Around Thanksgiving, we may already have in mind the idea of splurging on a large meal and maybe a few of us will be considering the thought of getting our bodies in a healthier weight range. The issue is that Christmas is coming and we’re planning on splurging then as well. After all, it’s the holidays. With that in mind, we may look to the cliche of getting in shape with a New Year’s Resolution. We promise ourselves that we’ll really do it this time. But here’s the thing. . .

We don’t have to wait. Right now, as I type this, as you read this, we can take advantage of the present. We only operate in the here and now. The future can always be mendable, so a promise made for tomorrow can sometimes evaporate. The struggle exists in our motivation. Maybe we’re not ready. We don’t feel up to it for whatever reason. Sometimes, it may be that we don’t know how to start or where to begin. All that stuff just adds to the stress of getting anything done. “I’ll just figure it out later.”

We don’t have to sit down on the couch and wait until later to do what we want to get done. Some folks are strapped for time and after working however many hours, they get home and just want to relax for a while. Unwind from the day’s stresses, and just celebrate your free time by just straight up chilling. If we ignore that voice in our heads telling us that we have earned the right to be lazy, we will be rewarded with mountains moved. We are greater than ants and check out those little buggers. Personally, I can’t stand them. my son Eli loves them for some reason. But there’s a verse in the Bible that has always stuck in my head. “Look to the ant, you sluggard.” And really, we have to admit that they toil through all sorts of obstacles to reach whatever they’re striving for. If an ant can do that, we can too.

It’s become a cliche to say that the past and future are ahead and behind us and that the present is God’s gift to us. It is a present. But we must realize that there is real truth in that. We don’t need to wait. We don’t need to hold off. We can get started right now, and once you get started, it’s off to the races.

Chance Meets Cerberus

Chance paused at the outer ledge of the most miserable canyon in all creation, Gluttony. Thick brown clouds poured never ending torrential rain into a muddy swamp. The unfortunate souls stuck here had exhausted themselves in pursuit of a destination that didn’t exist—the end of the canyon. They didn’t know it was a massive circle and toiled themselves to a crawl, clawing their way forward until they dug themselves into holes.

Daniel and his two unlikely companions slogged their way across the canyon toward Greed. Unbeknownst to them, Cerberus, the giant wolf infested with snakes would be after them. They would make a fine treat for that horrible monster, but not on Chance’s watch.

He tied a red bandana around his head, covering his mouth and nose. It would do little to stifle the stench but was better than nothing. He pressed his cowboy hat down onto his head, leaped into the deep canyon, and landed feet from a deep cavern. Cerberus’s home.

How Daniel and his companions got through the monster’s lair unscathed was a wonder to Chance. He, himself, may not be so lucky. Within the empty blackness of that dark hole emerged a long gutter growl that rippled the glistening brown waters of the swamp. Two snakes slithered from either side of the cave, hissing as two incensed red eyes loomed in the shadows.

Lightning flashed and the dark figure of Cerberus sprang after him. To Chance, it seemed like slow motion. To Cerberus, Chance would be a blur as he ran beneath it and grabbed its hindleg. Cerberus was able to handle his weight, and it dashed through the swam toward Daniel.

Not the best start. Cerberus heeded no remorse for those lying in the mire, smashing its giant paws against their backs, but sparing them its horrendous appetite. It wanted to sink its teeth into Daniel Strong, the only one in Gluttony, or any of the nine circles of the Inferno, who still shined with life. At this rate, Cerberus would be upon the man in minutes.

Chance let go of its mangy leg, sprinted in a loop, and smacked against its ribs, knocking the ravenous creature to its side. Though Cerberus was a powerful beast, it took a moment to get back to its feet.

“Ooooh Wee!” Chance tried in vain to wave off the stink. Gritty rain soiled his coat. His boots sank slightly in the sludge. “Smells worse than an outhouse in the middle of summer down here.”

Cerberus lunged at Chance and missed. The lightning-quick angel jumped onto the monster’s back and took it by the scruff. That sent Cerberus into a frenzy, jerking its head left and right snapping at Chance. It bounded and twirled, unable to get a hold of him.

This took Chance back to his rodeo days. He wasn’t very good then, but now that he could move at high rates of speed, he could do this all day—but the snakes!

The snakes were wrapped around Cerberus’s gut. One had slid slily down Cerberus’s spine and was coiled. Venom dripped from its fangs. It snapped.

Chance dropped to the side of Cerberus and splashed into the swamp. His hat fell off. The snake clamped down on Cerberus’s neck. The giant beast yipped like a Yorkshire Terrier. It tickled Chance so much that he nearly cried. The thunderous thuds of the wolf’s barrel-sized paws almost found him.

Without his hat, Chance couldn’t move fast. He felt around in the mud avoiding Cerberus’s trampling steps. Seconds felt like minutes, but he found it, rolled to all fours, and sped a few feet away. Cerberus had the snake by the back of its head and shook it violently. Such a thing would kill most creatures, but those who wallowed an eternal miserable demise in this place weren’t so lucky. When Cerberus let go, the snake merely retreated toward the foul giant’s backside.

Cerberus locked its glowing eyes on Chance, but it thought twice about lunging again. It sniffed the air and turned. Daniel, Beau, and Heartless Charles were still in the canyon. It sprinted after them.

Chance jolted ahead and Cerberus tried to dodge him, but Chance easily used his speed to keep the monster at bay. Cerberus grew frustrated. It stepped back and paced, glaring at Chance.

He tipped his hat. “May as well move along, big fella.”

Cerberus sprang for another bite. Chance ducked under the slow-moving monster and clung to its bottom jaw. It reared and snapped. Chance leaped up and plugged his forearms into its nostrils. This drove the hungry beast insane. It somersaulted, crashed on its side, and sneezed, blowing Chance back.

Covered in slimy mucus, Chance got up and half-wished he wasn’t so bold to enter Hell without a weapon. What was he thinking? I wasn’t thinking I’d have to wrestle a giant, nasty wolf for one. Cerberus struggled to get up from a particularly slippery spot in the swamp. Its claws dug a little deeper into the loose mud. Chance got an idea.

He sprinted underneath Cerberus and it fell back to its side. Each time it tried to get up, he did it again. Eventually, Cerberus was as stuck as all the other gluttons. It growled and barked.

“Stay!” Chance pointed his finger. “Next time I see you. We’re doing something about those snakes.” He turned back to the path that Daniel and his companions had taken, and tracked them to the cliffs that led to Greed. They had climbed to the summit and he followed after them.
