I think we need to apply this to older...
I think we need to apply this to older movies as well:
The homophobic gag in that rom com,
the racist side character in that coming of age story,
don’t just brush it of as a product of the time, acknowledge that it was bad then and remains a terrible aspect of the film today

[ID: a response to the tweet ‘What’s your hottest literature take?’ (By @cxcope). The reply is from liv / @boredromantic and says:
“
young women’s criticism of the (violent) misogyny in “classic” lit should be taken 100% seriously. if a teen girl says the rapey overtones of 1984 ruin the whole book for her, she’s not less intellectual. this goes double for girls refusing to read classics that are misogynistic”]

Worldbuilders naming towns: I named this town Elygwe’meth which means “Where the Dearly Beloved King died next to his Lover” in the language I invented and also a combination of the Old English word for diamonds and the Maori word for apples since that’s their main exports
People in real life naming towns: I named this town Big Falls cause big fall there
me poring over a fantasy map: Shit I already used that name for a town, I can’t use it again, that’s such sloppy worldbuilding
real life maps: There are six rivers in Britain called the River Avon, which means River River, because when the Romans asked the Celts “what is that?” they replied “a river?” and the Romans nodded and jotted it down

Who wants to know what those herbs are really good for?
fantasy writers have a thing for using Welsh as inspiration for their world’s languages but usually they at least vaguely change the words a bit or at least mix them with other languages, but the author of the Witcher just straight up took rhwydwaith carthion, thought ‘fuck it, that sounds vaguely like something you’d find in a potion’, chucked it into the series and just left it there for unsuspecting Welsh speakers to suddenly listen to Yennefer talk about how the best acid trip of her life came from eating a sewage system
Oh my god THANK YOU, use of Welsh in the Witcher has absolutely blindsided me

Okay I don’t know what the deal with Tumblr is but it was a pain to get it to even acknowledge that this picture existed. I had to edit and move it to every single picture folder I have on my phone before it would acknowledge it existed. But I wanted this picture here because this is my logo for my creative projects which I will be working on as soon as I am done with finals on the 9th of May
And of course I have to give credit where credit is due. This picture was drawn for me by Ari Bach you may know him as the person behind the blog @facts-i-just-made-up and also check out his blog @sharkchunks
He’s written a trilogy of books starting with Valhalla and my talk-to-text isn’t likely to accept the names of the other two but let’s try. Good streaky and Ragnarok. Oh okay well it took Ragnarok let’s hope I spell this correctly. Gudsriki. Don’t know how to do the letter symbols. The bee is based on a weapon he designed for the series called a tikari. it is an insect like creature that does many things including turning into weapons and if you look closely at the bees wings it turns into a shuriken.
Thank you so much Ari I love the bee and I’m glad I can finally share it and give you the proper credit. Check out his blog to learn more, and look up Ari Bach on TVtropes.org to learn about more of the stuff he’s done.
Thank you!!!
