Lauren Kung Jessen is a mixed-race Chinese-American writer with a fondness for witty, flirtatious dialogue and making meals with too many steps but lots of flavor. She is fascinated by myths and superstitions and how ideas, beliefs, traditions, and stories evolve over time.

From attending culinary school to working in the world of Big Tech to writing love stories, Lauren cares about creating experiences that make people feel something.

She also has a food and film blog, A Dash of Cinema, where she makes food inspired by movies and TV shows. She lives in Nashville with her husband (who she met thanks to fate—read: the algorithms of online dating), two cats, and dog.

I’m a pretty serious outliner/plotter, and I’ve found this to help keep me going, especially since I’ve thought through a lot of the more (what I find) challenging aspects of writing before I sit down to actually put fingers to the keyboard. As someone who likes (read: needs) a plan, I have a spreadsheet for my word count and keep a schedule so I can mentally prepare and set expectations for myself for when I’ll be writing.

When I really feel like I can’t sit down to write, I try (TRY!!) to be kind to myself and remember that writing is more than just typing out words into a document (research, reading, experiencing new things, staring into space being deep in your thoughts, walking, watching TV and movies, outlining…this is all part of “writing” because oftentimes I’ll have an idea while doing these things and it helps move the story forward. It also gives me rest from being so focused on something that I'm working on, which is important. Make time to rest!).

Everything you write isn’t going to be Final Draft Status, but you still have to sit down and do the work in order to get to that point. And you will get there! Even when you're feeling stuck, get those words on the page. You won’t always have motivation to write, but do it anyway. If you know your purpose, your 'why,' that’s what’s going to help you show up day after day.(less)
