Schon hier steht die zentrale Aussage des Buches und seines Autors: Ohne Glaube (an die Unsterblichkeit des Seele) gibt es keine Tugend, ist alles erlaubt (bis hin zum Mord). Iwan wird als Atheist geoutet und der alte Karamasow macht sich endgültig unmöglich. Fremdschämen hoch drei. Trotzdem entsendet der Starez Sossima Alexej aus dem Kloster zu seiner Familie.
