Excerpt
Come, the croaking raven doth bellowfor revenge. ~ William Shakespeare
CHAPTER ONE
Donegal Lands, Scottish Highlands12th Century AD
The raven flew high above the earth, her keen vision spying five Donegal hunters in the forest below.

The red and black of their plaids peeked through the trees, leaving no doubt to the true number, but she could only hear three of them. Two were silent as they stalked their prey. Even her raven hearing honed sharper than her talons could not detect the sound of their movements.

They had masked their scents as well, showing they had better control of their Chrechte nature than the others. These two Faol of the Chrechte were dangerous.

No wolf could be trusted, but one who mastered his beast was one who must be watched most carefully. He would not be easily taken in by the tricks of the Éan. It was good her raven family had set her to this task. Another, less seasoned fighter, could fail too easily with wolves such as these.

Sabrine had been protecting her people since her fifteenth summer, a long seven years past.

She circled lower, preparing for her landing. This had to look natural, but she did not relish taking human form merely to fall through a few tree branches. She was still a good distance from the men, though closer to the earth when an agonizing pain pierced her left wing.

Her first instinct was to pull her wing to her body, but she forced herself to keep it expanded so she could coast lower rather than spinning out of control. She would not die before saving her people from the wolves' treachery.

As she neared the earth, she let her raven fall away, taking on her fully human form, just as she had planned to before the foul arrow had pierced her wing. Tree branches scratched at her body as she tumbled toward the ground.

She ignored the minor pain for the larger purpose. She would use the wolves' thirst for blood against them. Their own actions would make way for her to find welcome in their clan.

As a helpless human female.

Dark amusement rolled through her with the pain of her landing. She grabbed the arrow, broke off the tip, gripped the other side, and yanked it from her arm.

As her world turned black around the edges, she threw the offending weapon as far from her as possible.

52 Weeks of Romance from Lucy Monroe!

Week #6's Featured Book:

TEMPT ME by Lucy MonroeBerkley Sensation - April 2006ISBN 0-4252-0922-9
An Excerpt from Chapter 1

Irisa faced Lucas across the small library.  The fog-dampened night could not intrude on the warm coziness of the room.

Lucas's mouth curved in a loving smile.  "You came."

She nodded, her throat too clogged with emotion to speak.

He extended his hand. "Come here, my love."

She moved forward as if in a daze, drawn by the warmth in her lover's eyes as much as the implied command in his stance.  She wanted him.

Desperately.

And he wanted her.

As soon as she was close enough to touch, he reached out and pulled her to him.  The feel of his warm skin on her bare arms sent shivers down her spine.  He did not stop pulling her until her body was an inch from his own.

She knew he would kiss her now.  Finally.  She had waited so long, but instinctively knew the wait would be worth it.  Lucas's mouth settled on hers, his lips warm and vibrant against her own.  She shuddered and he pulled his mouth a breath from hers.

"Are you all right, my love?"

"Yes.  Please.  Kiss me again."

He did so with alacrity while one arm moved around her waist.  His other hand settled on her shoulder, his fingers sliding under the fabric of her gown.  She blushed at the intimate touch, but did not pull away.  He groaned low in his throat and tugged the tiny cap sleeves of her gown down until the swell of her breasts were exposed.  Then he…  Then he… click to keep reading.

Action, passion and a clever plot make Moon Burning a sizzling story! Barr and Sabrine are like star-crossed lovers fated to be together and yet they are born enemies. The scenes between them are overflowing with skyrocketing fireworks. Whether they are arguing or making up these two know how to turn the heat up a notch. Sabrine and Barr are both fierce characters and they bring their strong wills to the relationship making for some interesting situations. The story underlying the relationship is fast-paced and intriguing. It is easy to be drawn to the characters and the situations they are facing. Lucy Monroe's storytelling is suave and exciting. This is my first Children of the Moon novel and I can't wait to read the next. It's not necessary to have read the first two novels to enjoy Moon Burning.

"Don't pray for patience or you're going to get opportunities to be patient," seeking to be less in control leads to the same thing.
In Lucy's blog post last Monday, she talked about being a control freak and how she has worked to overcome it in her writing and in her family.  What is one thing you like to control?

Mom's Birthday Weekends

The year my mom turned 50, my sisters and I decided that in addition to the big party, we wanted to do something special.  So we took her away for the weekend, just her and us.  That first year, we went to Newport and stayed in my big sister's very swank vacation time share.  To be honest, that was a pretty special deal for all of us.  My little sister and I had never stayed in a condo before, much less one with a Jacuzzi in the bathroom!  Mom loved it - the beach was her favorite place and she always said her kids were her favorite people. :)
She was so happy and made a simple request at the end of the weekend.  If we never got her anything else for her birthday again, if we would just do this retreat every year, she would be happy.  Well, we didn't stop buying pressies (it's in our genetics), but we made her birthday retreat an annual event.  Over the years we returned to the beach several times, made a trip to Victoria B.C. so we could have tea at the Empress and go to the Butchart gardens, went to Prineville and took her on a horse drawn carriage ride (oh the memories of what we talked about on that ride - let's just say that *nothing* is sacred between sisters even pet names for certain things LOL) and some years we even stayed in town.  Though not at any of our homes.  We went to hotels and visited mom's favorite places, like the Portland Art Museum and even OMSI.  One year we did this because my baby sister was too pregnant with her second child to go more than twenty miles from her hospital.  Some years we did it because Mom couldn't travel.
Mom's Birthday Dinner 2009The last year we left town for Mom's birthday, we went to the beach.  Seaside this time.  We rented a house and took her to the ocean on her scooter - it was her last time on her beloved sandy beach of Oregon.  The next year, she spent her birthday in a convalescent home - refusing to have a party there because she wanted to celebrate at home.  She went home, but the party wasn't destined to happen.  As you all know, Mom died in April and none of us girls will ever stop missing her.
Mom's birthday month has always been special for all of us girls, but this year, we're doing our last "Mom's Birthday Weekend" at her request.  You see, Mom got into the habit of giving us girls gifts on *her* birthday weekend (told you it was genetic) and this is her final one.
Mom with Us Girls at Pig 'N Pancake in Seaside Mom with Us Girls on the Sand - We did it!
I'll be honest and tell you that as much as I'm looking forward to spending time with my sisters, I know that this trip isn't going to be an easy one emotionally for me.  But one thing that will make it glow like all the ones before it will be our memories of times spent with Mom celebrating her birthdays in such a special way.
It's your turn:  I'd love to hear some of your favorite memories with your own moms, or "mom" figures.  I know not everyone was raised by women like my mom, who saw parenthood as a true privilege, but most of us have someone in our lives that fill at least a part of that "mom" role.  Share your memories with me as I've shared mine with you. :)
Hugs and blessings,Lucy
