Author Journal – 31 Days of Writing: Day 2
Today I plowed through editing for my upcoming novel, A Curse of Feathers & Fools, which is a fairytale retelling of The Seven Ravens.
How is it I can love a story so thoroughly, but dread working on it?! Every author I know understands what I mean.
I love my book. It’s the shortest one I’ve written. It’s not nearly as deep as my other two, but it’s full of adventure and fun, and it provides a nice escape from reality while still having (in my opinion) a good plot.
However, I also dre...

Author Journal – 31 Days of Writing: Day 1
When I was in my early 20’s, I blogged regularly. Topics mostly centered around my faith and what I was learning because that’s the type of blog I chose to create. I needed a place to process and share with the world, even if no one listened. I blogged because I needed to, not because I was popular or influential.
Somewhere along the way, my voice got quieter. I stopped blogging. Then I stopped journaling. I stopped writing altogether. Not because the noise inside me got quieter, but because...

From the Vault: Old Story, “The Story that was Forgotten”
I started writing at a young age. The following is one of the first story’s I ever wrote. I was 12 and The Story that was Forgotten was written and saved on a floppy disk. I’m pretty sure Pirates of the Caribbean had just come out and I was obsessed with the idea of pirate adventures.
I hope it makes you smile. It’s fun to look back on where I started.
Long ago in a deep, dark cave, a story had been forgotten. Unknown to all the world, for the few that knew i...

From the Vault: Old Story, “The White Horse Rides Again”
I started writing at a young age. The following is one of the first story’s I ever wrote. I was 11 and The White Horse Rides Again was originally written in Spanish as an assignment in language school.
I hope it makes you smile. It’s fun to look back on where I started.
“Grandpa, we’ve had cake and ice cream and I’ve opened my presents, so now can you tell me another story about Annie?” asked Sallie on her ninth birthday.
“Of course, Sallie. I have just the one. It hap...

“Just one more story, Grandpa…please?!” Said eight year old Sallie Winifer.
“Oh, I’d like to but what about your mother?” Replied her Grandpa.
“Oh, Mommy won’t mind. She said I could go to bed late because it’s ...

Look Up – A Poem
I wrote the poem “Look Up” to remind myself that even when the world feels dark and dangerous, there is always beauty and joy to be found.

Sunshine
soft
on the leaves
bids me
“Look up! Look out!”
Warm
bright
kind
forgiving.
Gentle wind
dancing
unaware, unrestrained.
This is my lot.

Cry – A Poem
I wrote the poem “Cry” for everyone who struggles to express the deepest and most painful things that well up in our hearts until they overflow.

Cry all the tears
that ever knock
that ever dare
to show up
begging for attention.
Gather every tear
that ever falls
hold it
name it
honor it
for its undying
courage.
It is in tears
we find
the beauty
of laughter.
It is in tears
we connect
most deeply
with ourselves.

Speak – A Poem
I wrote the poem “Speak” during a time in my life when writing seemed impossible and words were difficult.

If I speak
the words might
break me.
I might
shatter.
If I don’t
silence might
destroy me.
Killing me
without a fight.
I struggle.

Silence – A Poem
I wrote the poem “Silence” because my mind, my heart, and the world around me all become overwhelmingly loud. Sometimes, I just need to sit in silence and embrace it. Even if it’s awkward or difficult.

Silence is the song
revealing the truth
buried in my soul.
Silence is the beat
repeating within
heart, mind, and spirit.
Silence does not lie
Silence does not hide
Silence simply is.
Embrace the silence.

YOU – A Poem
I wrote this poem, “YOU”, for my husband, Brian. He is the best and kindest person I know.

You.
You are the warm hug
wrapped around me
as I cry,
the heart beating
in sync
with my own,
the smile
shining with joy
as I find the words
to say:
I love you.
You.
