Character Profile - Xalvador

A background history of The Progenitor Chronicles most complex character - XalvadorA prince with dark hair and tan skin wearing a black tunic with rubbies. He is sitting before a ball of fire on a volcano planet named Desdemona.

It’s funny how a character will change as you write a story. In my original thoughts, Xalvador was going to be the ultimate bad guy. But then, as I wrote the story, I kind of felt bad for him. I didn’t just give him a father who was … well, not nice, I stole his entire life from him. I gave him a background that would make anyone struggle to make good decisions. After some advice, I changed his story — a little.

Xalvador’s Early Life:

Xalvador is the first-born child of King Absalom and is the only child of Queen Ecantra. It was said he was the most handsome son on Desdemona. As a tribute to the newly born child, the Desdemonans caused all the volcanoes to explode on the planet.

He was a curious child who loved to explore the unique rock formations that made up the Obsidian palace. Those looking after him constantly had to usher him back inside to his studies as a child.

Though his father was enamored with his son at first, his heart grew dark over time. King Absalom brushed aside his wife and son to create another family. Xalvador had thirty half-brothers and sisters, but he was estranged from them.

Xalvador grew up in a dilapidated estate away from palace life with his mother. While there, he worked as a helper to several of the farmers in the area. It was their only source of food and clothing since his father refused to support them.

By the time Xalvador came of age, his father attempted to remove him as heir to the throne of Desdemona in favor of his half-brother, Mikal. Thankfully for Xalvador, the council members of Desdemona vetoed the King in his decision. But King Absalom had an alternative idea to remove his son — barbaric duels to the death.

It was during this ritual that his father had seen on a distant planet that Xalvador found himself up against his siblings in battle. His mother watched on as he was forced to kill more than half of them, including his father’s beloved son, Mikal.

King Absalom was furious with the outcome because Mikal had a special ability, he was born with that Xalvador did not. In order to gain his father’s approval, Xalvador sought genetic modification. After the procedure was completed, his powers to manipulate fire and liquify rocks intensified. Though his father looked on with some approval, Xalvador knew his father would never love him as much as his half-brother.

Space Fantasy VS Sci-Fi Book Genre

Let's discuss the space fantasy & sci-fi genres of both books and film.

Are these two genres' the same? The short answer is no. While both space fantasy and science fiction fall under the speculative fiction umbrella, they are, in fact, two very different subgenres. They share some similarities that may or may not be based on scientific principles, but there are also key differences between the two.

Space fantasy, also known as science fantasy, is a subgenre of speculative fiction that combines elements of science fiction and fantasy.

What qualifies as science fantasy or space fantasy genre?

Science fantasy is a subgenre of speculative fiction that combines elements of science fiction and fantasy. It often features futuristic or science fiction-like settings and technologies alongside supernatural or magical elements. In science fantasy, the rules of science and technology may not be strictly adhered to, and elements of magic or the supernatural may be incorporated into the story.

Some examples of science fantasy elements include:

Magical or supernatural powers or abilities that cannot be explained by scientific means. Alternate universes or realities that exist alongside our own. Advanced technologies or futuristic societies that coexist with mystical or fantastical creatures. Gods or other supernatural entities that interact with or influence the world.

Science fantasy can encompass a wide range of storytelling styles, from epic adventures to character-driven dramas. It can also be set in a variety of settings, including outer space, other planets, or alternate dimensions. Some well-known examples of science fantasy include Star Wars, the Dune series, and the Chronicles of Amber series.

Space fantasy stories typically feature fantastical elements, such as magic, mythical creatures, and supernatural powers, set within a science fiction setting, such as space travel, advanced technology, and alien worlds. Examples of space fantasy include Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Doctor Who.

Science fiction, on the other hand, is a genre of speculative fiction that typically explores the impact of actual or imagined science and technology on human society and culture. Science fiction stories may incorporate elements of science fantasy, but they are primarily based on scientific principles and explore concepts such as space exploration, time travel, artificial intelligence, and genetic engineering. Examples of science fiction include 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, and The Martian.

Is space opera in the science fiction genre or science fantasy book genre?

Space opera is considered a subgenre of science fiction. Stories in this genre typically feature large-scale, dramatic adventures set in space, often involving conflict between powerful groups, such as empires, interstellar civilizations, or spacefaring races. This genre emphasizes action, adventure, and epic themes, and may include elements of science fantasy, such as superhuman abilities or mystical powers. Although space opera often contains fantastical or unrealistic elements, such as faster-than-light travel, sentient robots, or psychic powers, it is still primarily focused on scientific or technological concepts related to space exploration, space battles, and interstellar civilizations.

In contrast, fantasy typically involves a unique set of conventions, such as magic, mythical creatures, and supernatural phenomena that do not rely on scientific or technological concepts. While there may be some overlap between space opera and science fantasy, which combines elements of both science fiction and fantasy, space opera is more grounded in science fiction and focuses on futuristic technologies and scientific concepts.

Overall, while there may be some blurring of the lines between space opera and other genres, it is considered a subgenre of science fiction.

Some examples of space opera in science fiction include Star Wars, Dune, and The Expanse. While space opera may not always be scientifically accurate or grounded in hard science, it is still considered a subgenre of science fiction because of its focus on space travel, technology, and futuristic societies.

The key differences between space fantasy and science fiction lie in the balance between fantastical elements and scientific principles. While both genres explore imaginative scenarios, space fantasy is more focused on magical or supernatural elements, while science fiction is more grounded in scientific theories and principles.

But for fun, let’s consider two of the largest space exploration franchises in modern times. I feel a war brewing.

Star Trek vs Star Wars

Is Star Trek science fiction or fantasy?

Star Trek is considered an example of science fiction rather than fantasy. Why? Star Trek is grounded in scientific concepts and explores themes related to space exploration, technology, and human society. You actually have a vague idea of how the warp core and other technologies work.

I know what you’re thinking. Star Trek contains some fantastical or speculative elements, such as faster-than-light travel and encounters with alien species, but the series is more concerned with exploring the scientific and social implications of these concepts rather than focusing on epic storytelling or mythical themes. The series has often been praised for its scientific accuracy and its portrayal of a diverse, multicultural future society that values knowledge, cooperation, and progress.

Did you know Gene Roddenberry actually had scientists evaluate his tech jargon? That’s because he wanted his series, though fantastical, to be as scientifically accurate as possible.

Another hot button issue among fans is: Is Star Trek a Space Opera?

We just learned that space opera is feature large-scale, dramatic adventures set in space, often involving conflict between powerful groups, such as empires, interstellar civilizations, or spacefaring races. Sounds like Star Trek, right?

It could be. But if we delve deeper into the show and the subsequent books, Star Trek is a mixed bag of space opera and hard science fiction. In some shows and books, the emphasis is more on the characters and space battles (Space Opera). In others, the stories emphasize the impact of technology on the environment and culture (Hard Sci-Fi). How one classifies Star Trek will depend on their own interpretation and understanding of the genre conventions. Sometimes, Star Trek is not considered a space opera, it’s hard science fiction. But what is hard science fiction?

Hard science fiction focuses on exploring scientific and technological concepts and their potential impact on society, often with a focus on accuracy and plausibility. While Star Trek does feature adventure and excitement, and sometimes wars, it is more focused on exploring scientific and social issues, rather than on grand and dramatic storytelling. The series is known for its exploration of topics such as space exploration, time travel, artificial intelligence, and the relationship between humans and aliens. It also often addresses contemporary social issues through its stories and characters.

Despite anyone’s opinion of the genre of this fantastic world, I think we can all agree it’s an amazing sci-fi world that I would love to live in.

Is Star Wars science fiction or science fantasy or space opera?

Star Wars is considered an example of science fantasy rather than science fiction. While Star Wars is set in space and features futuristic technologies such as spaceships, blasters, and lightsabers, it also contains a significant amount of fantastical or mystical elements, such as the Force, Jedi Knights, and Sith Lords.

Unlike science fiction, Star Wars is more focused on epic storytelling, adventure, and mythological themes. While there may be some scientific or technological explanations for certain aspects of the Star Wars universe (midichlorians and cyber crystals), they are often treated as secondary to the overall narrative and the fantastical elements of the story.

Star Wars is often considered a space opera. A space opera is a subgenre of science fiction that typically features melodramatic and larger-than-life stories set in a futuristic or spacefaring setting. Space operas often involve epic battles, political intrigue, and grand adventures.

Star Wars has many of the characteristics of a space opera. It is set in a vast and expansive universe, features large-scale conflicts between opposing forces, and includes elements of romance, drama, and adventure. It also features memorable and larger-than-life characters, such as Jedi Knights, Sith Lords, and iconic spaceships like the Millennium Falcon. Let’s not forget the droids because I love R2-D2 and BB-8; C3PO is fun too.

Whichever space exploration shows and books you enjoy more, I think we can agree both franchise has shaped and defined our generation.

For me personally, I was watching Star Trek when I was drawing my first haphazard map of the Six-Systems. Then Star Wars came out. I loved seeing the Jedi powers at work, along with the development of the Sith Lords. In my heart of hearts, I’m still a Tolkien girl, I’d rather be having afternoon tea in the Shire with a good book. But like Bilbo, I long for adventure. But unlike Bilbo, I sometimes imagine traveling through space to see a nebula up close. Or having a holographic doctor mend my wounds. Either way, all of these speculative fiction genres have influenced my writing.

Here are a few science fantasy and space opera books that you might love. If you've read any of these books, let me know in the comments below.

Review of Proud Pada

A fascinating science fantasy series that takes you through space and quarrels with the gods.

PROUD PADA by S.G. Blaise

Synopsis:

Lilla is on her next mission as a Sybil,

when she must travel to the Pada world following the trail of a ruthless murderer.

Navigating deadly politics turns increasingly difficult,

when the Teryn emperor goes missing.

Now the Teryn empire is heading towards civil war,

and Lilla must uncover who is behind the conspiracy before it's too late.

Unfortunately her success depends on the Proud Pada.

Review:

Proud Pada is the third book in The Last Lumenian series. It picks up right where the second book leaves off and takes the reader deeper into the culture of the Pada and their true origins.

Lilla finds herself in an impossible situation again. They have to serve the Arch Goddess of Light in the Era War, but she just can't ignore a murder, especially when she finds dark powers at play. Lilia and her friends have to find the murderer and the clues lead them to Pada.

Pada is a planet I would love to visit. But the people have the same pretentiousness as the Teryns but in reverse. They have powers to manipulate all the elements and they are strong. Soon Lillia is caught between their honoring their cultural ways and trying to find a killer.

The twist at the end was surprising, but makes sense all the same. If you want to know more about it, pick up this book and read it. You won't be disappointed.

I would recommend this book to both fantasy and sci-fi readers that love clean reads. It's a fantastic space fantasy.

How to Get Out of a Reading Slump?

We’ve all been in a reading slump before. There are a ton of books on our shelves (virtual or physical) just screaming at us to read them. We want to read; we claim to be bookworms, but we just can’t drum up the desire to read a book. How can we get past it? To begin with, we need to know why are in a slump.

Why are we in a slump?

There are several reasons we could enter a phase where we just aren’t interested in reading. We could be depressed, stressed, burned out, or just out of habit.

Ask yourself: What in my life is causing me to avoid reading or not enjoy it?

For me, it’s been a combination of grief and stress. I’ve recently lost three people in death, become a caregiver, and moved to a new home on top of my other work obligations. While I want to read to escape reality, sometimes I just can’t get into a book.

What are some ways you can get yourself past the slump?

First, give yourself permission to read. Sometimes, when we’re stressed or busy, we neglect our mental health.

A study in 2009 reported that reading can lower blood pressure, heart rate, and feelings of psychological distress. A 2013 study conducted by Rush University Medical Center found that reading or other mental stimulating activities reduced the likelihood of developing dementia or other dementia-like diseases. And my favorite study showed that those who read at least three hours a week were twenty-three percent more likely to live longer than those who didn’t read at all.

If reading improves our mental and physical health, it should be a priority in our lives. Scheduling time to read is vital. Whether we read for work or for fun, we should prioritize it on our calendar. Consistency with anything is what helps us through the valley's of our lives.

How will you select a book if you’re just not feeling it?

This will depend on the type of reader you are.

The book blogger

It can be really difficult if you’re a book blogger in a slump. You will have bookish obligations and possibly working on a deadline. Author ARC teams can be rewarding, but they can also be difficult to maintain and keep your joy.

Remember, you can say no.

As an author, I love my ARC team, but I know not everyone can read fast and real-life things come up. I’d rather have a team member say “I may not get to your book” and opt out of that book rather than risk their mental health. If you already opted into an ARC team, just talk to the author and let them know you may be late with your review. A review later than planned is better than nothing at all.

Sometimes slumps can come on because we’ve obligated yourself to a book for “work” rather than fun. If this is the case for you (and you read fast) try reading outside your genre or a book for fun. One of the greatest things about this generation of authors and books is the rise of the short episodic stories. While you may not want to stop reading “obligation” books, these short fan fiction stories can help lift you out of your slump.

The bookworm

The voracious bookworms can get overwhelmed too. You just don’t feel like reading or your TBR is just too big, so you’ll buy new books.

With technology today it, the choices of what to read are many. Authors keep creating new books for everyone to read every day. How can you keep up?

I hate to say it, but you don’t have to read every book. Reading should be fun.

If you need a reboot, try revisiting an old favorite. This has helped me in the past. I’ve found it especially comforting when I am feeling sad or not feeling like “meeting” new people.

Sometimes the comfort that comes from the “old friends” of a familiar book can give you the energy to meet new book friends.

Mood Readers

I will admit to being a mood reader. Sometimes I feel like traveling to other planets and other times I want to live in a fairytale world with modern plumbing. While sometimes I want to read those fun rom com novels with the meet cute romance.

It’s probably easier to circumvent the slump when you’re this type of reader. Just pick up something new read. Just avoid the obligation to read because it won't help you.

Just as it is easier to circumvent the reading slump, it's just as easy to get into one. Again consistency is key to any reading goal. Even if you're a mood reader, try to plan out your books. Perhaps you can pick five books a month, but not put them in order. Allow yourself read one you feel like out of that pile. Once you're done pick up another one until your book pile for the month is done.

If you just can't push yourself to read, take a break and leave any remaining books for the following month.

Reading Slump Tips: Try a new genre If you’re in a reading slump, it could be because you’re feeling a bit bored with the books you’ve been reading. If you normally read sci-fi or fantasy fiction, try reading a mystery book, or vice versa. If you typically read romance, try reading a thriller or a sci-fi novel. By switching things up and trying something new, you might find that you’re excited to read again. Set a reading goal: Sometimes all we need to get motivated is a goal to work towards. Set yourself a reading goal for the month, like reading a certain number of books or finishing a particular book you’ve been meaning to read for a while. Having a goal can help you focus on your reading and give you a sense of accomplishment when you reach it. Join a book club: A book club can be a great way to get out of a reading slump. Not only do you have a community of people who share your love of reading, but you also have a built-in reading list and deadlines to keep you accountable. Plus, discussing the books with others can help you gain a new perspective and appreciation for the story. Read in short bursts if you’re finding it hard to sit down and read for long periods of time: Set a timer for 15 or 20 minutes and read as much as you can in that time. By doing this a few times a day, you might find that you’re able to get through more books than you thought possible. You can also set it up by chapter breaks. The only danger is staying up too long. Watch a television show or a movie: My go to series is Gilmore Girls. There is nothing like watching Rory sniff a book and enthusiastically talk about the endless book collections at the libraries of Yale that jump start my enthusiasm for reading. Take a break If none of these tips are working, it might be time to take a break from reading altogether. Sometimes our brains just need a rest, and forcing yourself to read when you’re not feeling it can make things worse. Take a break and come back to reading when you’re feeling refreshed and ready to dive back in.

Whatever your reasons for reading, getting out of a reading slump can take a bit of effort, but it’s worth it to reignite your love of reading. Whether it’s trying a new genre, setting a goal, joining a book club, reading in short bursts, or taking a break, there are plenty of ways to get back into the reading groove. Just remember, reading should be fun, not a chore, so don’t put too much pressure on yourself and enjoy the journey.

These are just a few things I’ve found helpful. If you have a helpful tip, let me know in the comment section.

Here are a few book suggestions to help you get out of your reading slump:

The Reflection by Rachel R. Smith

An Heiress, an ancient prophecy, and a masquerade...

The night of the masquerade celebrating a thwarted assassination attempt on the Royal Family is swiftly approaching, and this year Nerissa has a plan. Ever since she was named Heiress of Chiyo, she has wondered whether others liked her for who she is or for the title she holds. On this one night, she can be free of her royal role and enjoy the revelry in blissful anonymity. All she needs to do is feign illness, return to her room to change into a second costume she’s prepared in secret, and then slip back into the party unrecognized.

She doesn’t know that a warning of another assassination attempt is on its way to the capitol.

She doesn’t know that a prophecy, hidden away for centuries, has just been rediscovered—and the events it foretells are already in motion.

The Successful Author Mindset by Joanna Penn

Being a writer is not just about typing. It’s also about surviving the roller-coaster of the creative journey.

Self-doubt, fear of failure, the need for validation, perfectionism, writer’s block, comparisonitis, overwhelm, and much more. When you’re going through these things, it can feel like you’re alone. But actually, they are part of the creative process, and every author goes through them too.

This book collects the mindset issues that writers experience, that I have been through myself over the last decade, and that perhaps you will experience at different times on the creative journey.

Each small chapter tackles a possible issue and then offers an antidote, so that you can dip in and out over time. It includes excerpts from my own personal journals as well as quotes from well-known writers. I hope it helps you on the road to becoming a successful author.

***This one is my go to for author resets of my brain. It is geared towards authors, but really anyone in the bookish community can find gems to keep your head on straight. ***

Technology vs Environment - Can there be balance?

A pyramid with flying space ships covered with greenery

I've always been fascinated by technology, but I also love the the natural world. I'll hike in the mountains several times a year, but I also take pictures with my phone. Like many of my generation, I'm rarely without my phone. Technology is a necessary part of our lives, but the process of making that technology impacts our environment.

It's these thoughts that fueled the story of The Progenitor Chronicles. The planet of Xardenora is a world I long to live in. Hover vehicles travel down roads that carry them through modernized Tolkien styled tree houses. Fuel sources are regularly replenished and recycled by the molecules around them like in Star Trek. The caretakers of the world live in harmony with their environment like in Avatar. But these caretakers don't stop with their own home, they assist other planets as well.

The people of the Six Systems not only have the technology, they have the magic too. Their abilities to manipulate the environment is fueled through their connection and understanding of the elements around them. They are able to feel each molecule down to their basic components, rearrange them, and correct any deficiencies.

We may not have those powers, but we do have some power to help our environment.

Blaming each other is a waste of time.

The only thing that matters is changing what's wrong.

Deadly Ransom , Captain Planet

Can there be balance?

Star Trek comes to mind when I think of their ability to control weather. They created habitable planets, traveled the stars, and managed to figure out how to balance their environment with their technology. Because of this little TV show, I know I am not alone desiring balance.

While making a change will not happen over night, it will happen if we all stand together to make small changes in our everyday life. A small rock in a large pond creates a few ripples, but many large rocks will fill the pond. If we have the desire, we can make that change.

The feeling that one person can't make a difference is the greatest obstacle of all.

Rain of Terror, Captain Planet

What can we do?

Let us all educate ourselves. Make those small changes in our everyday lives; recycle our trash, find alternative resources, and be open to change.

Encourage our business' to innovate safer manufacturing and mining processes so we can all breathe a little better.

Volunteer to clean up our water ways or at least contribute to a worthy organization that can help.

Inspire the next generations to dream of technology that can better our world. Encourage the young ones to read books or watch movies with fantastic technologies that show us how to live in balance with our home. After all, the technologies of yesterday's Star Trek are becoming the realities of our everyday life.

To save the planet, we need to work together – and share.

The Conqueror , Captain Planet

I believe that someday we will have that balance. So in the mean time, I'll do my best to keep my home planet clean. I may not be perfect, but I'll try. I will continue to dream of worlds that have already figured it all out. Hopefully, I'll help our planet one word at a time.

Happy Bookiversary to “The Progenitor”

A picture of the first book in The Progenitor Chronicles.

The book is also an epic adventure fantasy set in space, with Xendara and her companions embarking on a journey filled with danger, self-discovery, and mystery. Xendara’s character arc is compelling as she navigates the challenges of being a leader and discovering her true power. Her journey is one of growth, both in terms of her own abilities and her relationships with those around her.

Overall, “The Progenitor” is a must-read for fans of space opera and epic adventure fantasy. Its compelling characters, expansive setting, and masterful blend of genres make it a standout in the world of science fiction and fantasy. The book’s themes of love, loss, and the search for balance resonate on a deeper level, making it a story that will stay with readers long after they’ve turned the last page.

As a lover of sci-fi and fantasy, I have always been fascinated by the idea of exploring the unknown and the possibilities of the universe. In “The Progenitor,” I could combine my love for science fiction and fantasy to create a unique story.

The novel follows the journey of Princess Xendara, the heir to the throne, as she uncovers the secrets of her father’s past and learns of a power she didn’t know she had. Along with her childhood friend Darijus, she discovers the origins of the universe and the forces at play that threaten the balance of the Universe .

With powers her enemies aim to exploit, Xendara must make a choice that will divide a galaxy and risk galactic war. It is a tale that I believe will resonate with readers of all ages and backgrounds.

One thing I am most proud of in this novel is the emphasis on clean fantasy and clean romance. In today’s world, it is often difficult to find stories that are both entertaining and appropriate for a family to read together. In the teachable moments where darker themes may be explored, I aim to keep the story wrapped in hope and light. The real world can be filled with such darkness that I want to allow readers a few moments of hopefulness and positivity.

Since its release, I have been humbled and grateful for the support of readers like you. I am happy to share that the book has sold almost 3,000 copies and has received positive feedback from many readers.

To all those who have already read and downloaded “The Progenitor”, I would like to express my gratitude to every one of you for your support. It is because of readers like you I can continue writing and share my love of science fiction and fantasy.

In celebration of the book’s anniversary, I am offering the opportunity to download the ebook for free on April 19, 2023. I would like to encourage those who download the book to leave a review and share their thoughts. As an author, there is nothing more rewarding than hearing from readers and knowing that my work has touched their lives.

While I may not be the best author on the planet, I am learning with each book. My goals for the future are to persevere and learn from each book and it's launch. It's my hope you'll continue on my author journey and connect with me as I grow.

May You Prosper as the Golden Wood tree!

The Ancients – Update Two

A quick update about the third book in The Progenitor Chronicles

The third book in The Progenitor Chronicles is has gotten me in a twist. I am still excited to share the end of their journey, but the journey isn't as I originally imagined it.

Xendara’s origins are much more complex than I originally thought. As she reveled herself to me, I was surprised, but not at the same time. It just all of a sudden made sense. If you've ever watched Jupiter Ascending, you'll have an idea of what I'm talking about. DNA is a tricky thing that human's don't quite understand, but the Ancients understand it all too well.

The evil villain in this installment is very corrupted by the dark matter that permeates his entire existence. But it's not him Xendara has to battle in this third book, there is another far worse.

For those readers who fell in love with The Golden Wood trees, I am happy to say they are featured in the third book thanks to time travel. Their origins are even more intriguing than I originally imagined. I can't wait to share their journey with you.

The members of the planets of the Six Systems are so intriguing. I can't wait to share more of this facilitating story.

I'll leave that for you for now. Sign up for my newsletter to stay in touch about the release coming this fall.

May you prosper as the Golden Wood trees!

A Forest of Talking Trees

I fell in love with trees when I visited our local mountains as a little girl. We’d visit the small towns every year in both the summer and winter months. Sure, I liked to play in the lake, but it was the smell of the trees that always brought a smile to my face.

But forests are not without their perils. For example, one summer, a fire started in the campground below the cabin my family was renting. If the wind had changed direction towards us, my family may have not made it out.

Despite the dangers, I still visit the mountains as often as I can spare time. Forests are my ultimate getaway, especially during my book launches. I’ve found the stress of publishing usually subsides when I’m hiking around my beloved trees.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, one large tree can produce enough oxygen for four people. While marine plants provide a majority of our clean air, trees still play a significant role in the Earth’s health. Trees are pretty awesome.

My love of trees is prominently featured in my books. In The Progenitor, I give them life beyond anything we see on Earth. They’re sentient beings with the ability to know the past and the future of the Universe. Golden Wood trees can download your entire memory in a few seconds and store it forever. They love to do this because they love knowledge as much as they love to get to know the surrounding people.

While these enormous trees don’t play as much of a role in the Equinox’s plot, they will play a significant role in the last books of The Progenitor Chronicles. Readers will get a glimpse of the Golden Wood trees in their infancy as they help Xendara face the ultimate threat to the Universe. I can’t tell you how excited I am to share this new story with everyone. But it will have to wait until release day.

In the meantime, here are a few fun facts about these magnificent trees.

Golden Wood tree:

· Bark that shimmers like gold in the sun

· The base of the trees can reach several miles wide

· The male Golden Wood tree that lives in the middle of the capital city of Tahra is said to reach all the way up into the Stratosphere

· These trees are semi-sentient and can telepathically speak to the people of the planet

· They are connected like a network throughout the planet

· These telepathic trees are considered the protectors of the planet

· They were merged with time crystals

· Golden Wood trees can be found in all four equinoxes of the galaxy

· They can emit light that reaches the distant corners of the galaxy

· Gifts are given by them to those they consider special

· Many myths and legends have been told about these ancient trees

It just so happens that March 21 is marked on the calendar as the International Day of Forests. It day when we can reflect on the health of our beautiful planet and how it’s health affects our own. Without forests, we would not be living with many of the modern comforts that we’ve become accustomed. Nor would we have our basic needs met.

If you have an opportunity, take some time, and show your appreciation for our tree population.

May you prosper as the Golden Wood tree.

If you’re a tree lover like me, here are four books that feature trees in the story.

Tree of Ages by Sara C Roethle

A tree’s memory is long. Magic’s memory is longer, and far more dangerous.

Finn doesn’t know what—or who—uprooted her from her peaceful tree form, changing her into this clumsy, disconnected human body. All she knows is she is cold and alone until Àed, a kindly old conjurer, takes her in.

By the warmth of Àed’s hearth fire, vague memories from her distant past flash across her mind, sparking a restless desire to find out who she is and what powerful magic held her in thrall for over a century.

As Finn takes to the road, she and Àed accumulate a ragtag band of traveling companions. Historians, scholars, thieves in disguise, and Iseult, a mercenary of few words whose silent stare seems to pierce through all of Finn’s defenses.

The dangers encountered unleash a wild magic Finn never knew she possessed, but dark forces are gathering, hunting for Finn and the memories locked away in her mind. Before it’s over, she will discover which poses the greater danger: the bounty on her head, or a memory that could cost her everything.

Tree of Ages is the first book in a complete Epic Fantasy series. If you love Celtic Lore, Druidic Magic, and Epic Adventure, you’ll love the dangerously enchanting world of Tree of Ages.

Note: If you want to know what it's like to be a tree, you'll love this book.

Pathways by Camile Peters

Eileen has never been interested in love. Ever since her father's abandonment, she's vowed to never experience such pain again. But the enchanted forest has different ideas. When the continuously shifting pathways lead her to a mysterious stranger, Eileen finds her promise to fiercely guard her heart increasingly difficult to keep.

One night when she becomes lost in a storm, the enchanted forest's pathways lead her to the castle, home to the kingdom's Dark Prince, where Eileen finds herself entangled in what many consider an opportunity but which Eileen believes to be a curse: competing for the Dark Prince’s hand through a series of tests that judge one’s royal worth. Eileen is neither royal nor interested in becoming a princess. But the mysterious stranger she met in the woods has his own reasons for helping her succeed, although the cost of his assistance may be too high: that of Eileen's heart, the one thing she's vowed never to give.

Inspired by “The Princess and the Pea” and "Rumpelstiltskin"

Note: If you'd love to wonder in an enchanted forest, you'll love this book.

The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien

Sauron, the Dark Lord, has gathered to him all the Rings of Power—the means by which he intends to rule Middle-earth. All he lacks in his plans for dominion is the One Ring—the ring that rules them all—which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as the Ring is entrusted to his care. He must leave his home and make a perilous journey across the realms of Middle-earth to the Crack of Doom, deep inside the territories of the Dark Lord. There he must destroy the Ring forever and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.

Can Sci-Fi and Fantasy Mix?

Science fiction and fantasy fall under the speculative fiction umbrella. They draw the same readers, and share similar world-building and imaginative concepts that are not possible in our own reality. For this reason, you’ll often find these genres lumped into the same sections of your local bookstore or library.

Unlike other genres, the lines between these two fantastic genres are blurred more often than some realize. If the books I’ve read lately are any sign, the defined lines between these two genres are blurring more and more.

The “What If” Genre

In a previous blog post, I talked about the “what if” genre known as speculative fiction (read the post here). Authors of other genres may ask “what if” to set up the premise of their book, but they are confined to the surrounding reality of our world.

For the speculative fiction genre, this term means a bit more because the answers are only limited by the imagination of the author. Because of this imaginative aspect of speculative fiction, authors can explore ideas that would not otherwise exist in our world. This is important to remember because of the similarities between these two similar, but distinct, genres.

The Similarities of Science Fiction and Fantasy

First, let’s explore the similarities between Sci-Fi and Fantasy.

Both science fiction and fantasy are known for creating imaginative worlds that differ from our own. They often involve world-building, where the author creates a unique setting that feels real. Authors can explore complex ideas and themes that might not be possible in other genres, resulting in entertaining and unique stories.

These genres require readers to suspend their disbelief and accept the possibility of things that don’t exist in our current reality. This could include technology that hasn’t been invented yet or mythical creatures.

Either way, these stories of the imagination are usually epic in scale, that involve large conflicts and battles, journeys across vast distances, and battles between good and evil.

But where do they diverge?

The Difference between Science Fiction and Fantasy

The first distinction between these genres is that science fiction typically has its basis in scientific principles and technologies that are theoretically possible. Where science fiction is rooted in the possible, fantasy is grounded in the fantastic. It often relies on supernatural or magical elements that are not grounded in our current reality.

As referenced above, both genres involve world-building, but the approach is often different. Where science fiction focuses on creating a future version of our own world or imagined new worlds based on scientific principles, fantasy, creates its own rules. These rules are entirely

unique to the setting of the story and characters with imagined magic systems and cultures.

Where science fiction diverges the most from fantasy is in the explored themes. Sci-Fi often deals with themes like technological progress, exploration, and the consequences of scientific advances. Fantasy, on the other hand, might explore themes like good versus evil, coming of age, or the struggle to control power.

The other larger divergence is in the magical system. While science fiction usually relies on technology as a central plot device, fantasy often uses magic in one form or another.

How can you blend these two genres together?

Science Fantasy

Depending on how an author mixes science fiction and fantasy together, the book may be considered science fantasy. This subgenre of speculative fiction sits in the middle of the road. It borrows tropes from both sides of the subgenres.

That means we can have princess dystopian books like The Selection by Kiera Cass.

You can also have a mage that powers a star ship through space like in Starship’s Mage by Glynn Stewart.

If you’re looking for the famous science fantasy movies, look no further than the Jedi and Sith in the Star Wars franchise. Wizards in space with laser swords.

This genre can be fun to imagine. If you want a glow-in-the-dark pony with glittery hair that flies through space, the subgenre of science fantasy has you covered.

If you’d like to read about science fantasy more in depth, check out the previous post here.

Can You Mix Science Fiction and Fantasy in a Book?

The simple answer is yes. Really, authors can combine any genre into one book, but there are things to consider before pulling out the laptop and writing.

For one, the author needs to consider what the readers expect in their stories. In general, epic fantasy lovers wouldn’t expect space travel in the novel. Space opera fans, however, might not mind some epic fantasy tropes layered into the book.

The cover is also important to consider. If you look through the bestseller list by genre on Amazon, you’ll notice trends. For example, space opera usually has a mix of stars, planets, people, and spaceship elements in the design. That means, if an author mixes the two, the author needs to decide which side of the speculative fiction line does their book fall into, science fiction or fantasy. Why? Unfortunately, there isn’t a formal genre of science fantasy. So, for now, authors must pick whether or not the story is more science fiction or fantasy in order to appeal to their readers.

Here are great examples of novels that mix science fiction and fantasy:

Beyond the Sapphire Gate by R. V. Johnson

Drawn kicking and screaming into a centuries-old war, can a woman on the brink of madness fulfill the realm's bloodiest prophecy?

Crystalyn Creek is a tenacious survivor in her fading, hi-tech birth world. So when she spots a tome full of strange symbols at her otherwise mind-numbing job, she’s grateful for the distraction. But after her odd affinity for the book’s designs inadvertently opens a portal, she’s shocked when her carefree younger sister tumbles through.

Determined to pull her sibling back to safety, Crystalyn dives through the otherworldly doorway and becomes embroiled in an ages-long battle between light and dark magic. But when she discovers using her fascinating new power is slowly killing her, she’s angered by the knowledge that her rescue mission could fuel the death of the land… and her own demise.

Will Crystalyn survive her dangerous quest to save her sister before the entire realm falls to its doom?

Beyond The Sapphire Gate is the intricate first book in The Flow of Power science fiction fantasy series. If you like captivating characters, richly detailed world-building, and surprising twist endings, then you’ll love R.V. Johnson’s struggle for survival.

Character Profile - Darijus

A man standing on the beach watching the two suns setting on Regvand

The first thoughts of Darijus were of a sandy blond young man with ocean blue eyes that loved water. In his original role, he was supposed to be a minor Duke of another planet, but I thought I’d make his life a little more complicated. One thing that remained was his instinct to protect those he loves, even when they don’t need protecting.

Darijus’ Early Life:

Darijus is the first-born child of King Tahvo and Queen Reya. From a very young age, Darijus took to the water like a seal. Any chance he could, he would jump into the lagoon outside his palace home. He was often seen with his best friend Ronan exploring the vast oceans of their planet.

It was on Regvand that he met his other best friend Xendara. During school breaks, they would alternate which planet they would stay on while visiting one another. Darijus and Xendara were said to be mischievous, often using their growing powers to swipe sugary confections from the kitchens. Much to his sister’s dismay, he always prioritized his time with Xendara. When they were in each other’s company, they were rarely apart. Darijus was always known to be very protective of her. He even pushed away a healer to take care of her wounds himself, despite not having the ability to heal.

It was after meeting Princess Xendara that Darijus took an interest in dendrology. His interest in trees grew with time. During his visits to Xardenora, he’d implore the young princess to help him cultivate trees he’d found on her planet to the beach area next to the palace on his home world. Each attempt failed until the Pluma trees. He could cultivate large forests of the tiny flowering tree which earned him an award, but being humble, he gave credit to Xendara.

Facts about Xendara:
