Surfing Safari

I recently contributed to a ’Surfposium’ in Cornwall and it set me thinking about the best surfing scenes in non-surfing movies. Here are my top five - some a bit controversial. But what are yours?

I’ve just watched Before Midnight again on DVD - the follow-up to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. I reckon it could complete the perfect trilogy - can you think of a better one?

Ender’s Defenders

The big new release this week is Ender’s Game - a smart, thoughtful sci-fi movie. It’s courted controversy because of the opinions of the writer whose novel it is based on. But why should his views have any bearing on what we think of the film?

Hijacking Stories

The big movie this week is Captain Phillips starring Tom Hanks as the captain of a ship overrun by Somali pirates. A Hijacking - a nailbiting Danish thriller with the same theme - is out on DVD. The two films are very different but each is brilliant in its own way.

Cineworld and Competition

Last December multiplex giant Cineworld acquired the Picturehouse arthouse chain. Now it has been ruled anti-competitive in certain places and they are being forced to sell some of the cinemas. What do you think of this development?
