A Team Tribute

Yes it's that time of year again: woods, tents. stringed instruments, a washboard and a major Hollywood theme tune. And this year's skiffled blockbuster? The A Team...

Inception reception perception

Christopher Nolan's brilliant Inception is only the latest celluloid reverie on dreamscapes and in your replies to my blog on this matter you have excavated cinema's id and uncovered a vast seam of raw oneirism featuring fantasies as diverse as a videogame movies starring Edward Furlong, a Japanese animation or two, and Alain Resnais's mindbending Last Year at Marienbad.

Beyond Parody

The Asylum's Mega Piranha is a cheap quickie, a so-called 'mockbuster' designed to glide in the wake of the big budget summer release Piranha 3D, just as The Da Vinci Treasure, Pirates of Treasure Island, and Paranormal Entity cashed in on The Da Vinci Code, Pirates of the Caribbean and Paranormal Activity respectively. But since the original 1978 Piranha, of which Piranha 3D is pretty much a remake, was itself a knowing parody of Jaws, has it all gone a little too far? And where did it all...

Inception reception

Now that we've all had a chance to sample Leonardo Di Caprio, Tom Hardy and Ellen Page in Christopher "Batman" Nolan's Inception (and those of us who have not really should), does it not seem to you that some of it is rather more familiar than it dreams it is?

You hum 'em and I'll play 'em

That thing you do when you reply to my blogs is remind me of things I may have overlooked, such as That Thing You Do (among other fake pop songs from the movies and TV that could have, should have been real).

Isabelle Huppert has the right material

With two of her films on release there is no better time to recognise the extraordinary talent of this exquisitely sophisticated actor.

A Hitchcock in my Attic

As the BFI requests the nation search its attics in the hope of locating a missing Hitchcock movie I am inclined to ponder what else should be up there...
