(I know Ive probably asked before but) Recommend me feminists books and authors!

The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood. They did a tv series last year I think. I recommend you both. People classify it as a feminist book, I’m not pretty sure about it but anyways it’s worth it.

The Handmaid’s Tale is gritty and disturbing, but so wonderful. And there’s Moira, the amazing lesbian friend. She’s probably the most vibrant, feminist character in the whole thing. It does take some thought to see the feminist angle, but that’s the point. The world in it is one so firmly under the patriarchy that nobody is certain anymore whether or not they believe women are people, too. There’s a huge conflict of women being the most important members of the society (without them, it would collapse), but also the most objectified and repressed. By virtue of being ignored and having power taken away, the women in tHT are left with no choice but to empower themselves in whatever ways they can, which is how it should be anyway.

Also, Jane Eyre, if classic lit is your cup of tea. Everything in it is so relevant to today’s view on feminism, and thanks to Brontë’s unflinching resolve and independent life, is less tainted by institutionalised sexism than some modern feminist works.

I would also recommend And the Mountains Echoed and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Both novels have strong feminist themes— through a middle-eastern cultural lense rather than a Western one, which makes them very important reads. They focus on strong female relationships and the struggles that women face, and in Splendid Suns, the idea that women “can only see one another as threats” appears to be perpetuated at first, but is then thoroughly dismantled.

Finally, Life After Life by Kate Atkinson. Although not classified as a feminist novel, LAL centres around a strong female lead and tackles issues around sexism/feminism throughout the book.

I stumbled across this small publishing house literally called Feminist Press. Haven’t read any of their books I don’t think, but all they publish is work by women about women with feminist themes, both fiction and non-fiction it looks like.

Kim Shimmers and the Veil of Death

A Harry Potter fanfic by me (and the 4th instalment in the Kim Shimmers series)

imageimage

How could we ever hope to flicker on against a
darkness so complete, against an evil so prevailing?

This Harry Potter fan fiction  (as long as all goes according to plan) will be posted at the beginning of every week. The pictures above are not mine, though I edited some.

Chapter 8

Drowning

At the first of February apparition classes began. Ron had been spouting for weeks about how he was determined to pass the apparition test on the first try, but Kim was not nearly as confident. It generally took her twice as long to learn basic spells as other students, though she wasn’t sure apparition counted as being a basic spell. She wasn’t sure if that thought should be comforting or concerning. At least she had already experience what apparition felt like, though she kept that fact quiet when she saw the endless bout of questions it had gained Harry. Besides, Kim couldn’t think of a good enough lie to explain how she had felt apparition before, since no one, including Harry, Ron, and Hermione, knew about her and Dumbledore’s venture to the Gaunt House.

Kim filed into the Great Hall along with Harry and Hermione, while Ron was off somewhere with Lavender. The tables were all cleared away and there was a very pale, insubstantial man standing at the front of the room along with all the heads of houses.

“Good morning,” said the man, quieting the hall. “My name is Wilkie Twycross and I shall be your Ministry apparition instructor for the next twelve weeks. I hope to be able to prepare you for your Apparition tests in this time—”

“Malfoy, be quiet and pay attention!” barked Professor McGonagall, which brought about numerous smirks from the Gryffindors. Kim didn’t bother to let her concentration be broken by Malfoy’s messing around. Focus on the task. Focus on apparition.

“—by which time, many of you may be ready to take your tests,” Twycross continued, as though there had been no interruption.

“As you may know, it is usually impossible to aparate or disapparate within Hogwarts. The headmaster has lifted this enchantment, purely within the Great Hall, for one hour, so as to enable you to practice. May I emphasize that you will not be able to apparate outside the walls of this Hall, and that you would be unwise to try.

“I would like each of you to place yourselves now so that you have a clear five feet of space in front of you.” The Great Hall was filled with the shifting of feet against the wooden floor. The Heads of Houses moved among the students to insure there was enough space between them and silenced any chatter that broke out.

“Thank you,” said Twycross. “Now then…” With a wave of his wand wooden hoops appeared on the floor before every student. “The important thing to remember when apparating are the three D’s!” said Twycross. “Destination, Determination, Deliberation!

Step one: Fix your mind firmly upon the desired destination. In this case, the interior of your hoop. Kindly concentrate upon that destination now.” Kim was already focusing. She relaxed her face, felt a wave of easiness wash over her body. Focusing was actually something she was quite good at.

“Step two,” said Twycross, “focus your determination to occupy the visualized space! Let your yearning to enter it flood from your mind to every particle of your body!”

From here… to there. Just like that, she thought, feeling the energy in her body flow in through her breath and emanate to her fingertips, down to her toes.

“Step three,” called Twycross, “and only when I give the command… Turn on the spot, feeling your way into nothingness, moving with deliberation! On my command, now… one… two…three!”

5 “Key” Tips to Making Your Writing Authentic

nanowrimo:

We’re gearing up for Camp NaNo, and whether you’re a first time NaNo writer, or if you’ve published before now, you’re sure to know that there’s a lot of work involved in writing a book and making it feel authentic. Today, writer and Wrimo Jav Bond shares their tips for making your writing authentic:

The process of making a good novel great involves more than cleaning up small errors; it can mean taking on an intense process of starting from the ground up (sort of). So it’s important to remember throughout the entire process that authenticity is key.

Here are some key lessons I’ve learned from writing, editing, and preparing to publish my NaNo novel:

1. Revisit and rethink your novel.

You probably already know what I’m about to say: when you’re planning to publish, you can’t just send in your draft as-is; you need to revisit and rethink your story with a fresh perspective.

The editing process isn’t just a grammar check; it’s a crash course in managing how your story flows—from the plot and characters to the style, you’ll have to grow in your overall understanding of the story.

This is unrealistic. My car always seems to explode and destroy everything.

What sort of things would be memes in your WIPs?

No Chloe, don’t do the thing– Oh… you did the thing.

Just generalized frustration at Chloe
Stranger danger, creeper alert memes for when Ayden is being creepy
Eric= sweet, but clueless
Two camps of people, one who like Blair because she’s a bad ass, and one who hate her ‘cause she’s really really mean

Reblog this post with an out of context quote from your OC

“People point at things, and I stab the things for money. Someone here pointed at something, so I’m gonna go stab it now.”

“Don’t be silly, other dimensions are completely different.”

“You, me, the electoral college. I’m into this, let’s do business together, bitch!”

“It’s part of the interview,” I say with a roll of my eyes. “He manifested all my fears into physical creatures, and now I have to defeat them to prove my worth or something like that.”

“Hug me”.

“If
you’re suggesting I got drunk and almost drowned, I can assure you I didn’t.”

“Every time I shower, I drop my toothbrush on the grimy floor-”

“-gross-“

“-and I’m going to get mersa if I don’t get a pair of
flip flops for the shower.”
