you know whats bs? the fact that many disorders are only diagnosed if theyre “a significant hindrance to your functioning” except, neurodivergent people are literally forced to “function” in a world made for neurotypical people, so how can you even tell what impairs our function when we’ve been forced since birth to act as though we’re functioning perfectly fine and to push ourselves to unhealthy limits to do so
I don’t know if anyone else has added this but that concept can be very dangerous not just because it denies people the medical attention they might need or desire but because it can push them to purposely stop coping in order to access it.
For me personally, I was about 12 when a therapist told me “you have eating disorder like thoughts and behaviours but I’m not going to diagnose or treat you for it because you don’t meet the other criteria”. (i.e. being a certain percentile in the underweight class).
So essentially what this woman told me was “I need to see you starve before I will provide the care you need” and my response was to do just that. I needed help and I was desperate for it. I would prove myself and my sickness to her. If it had to “get before it got better” so be it”.
I went from barely fighting to choke down every bite of food and restricting nutrition intake to not eating at all. Long story short, I lost so much weight I nearly died. This fucked up psychology philosophy almost killed me and I can’t be the only one.
#see also: “someone else’s problem are worse so I don’t deserve treatment”
#see also: “it’s not THAT bad”
#for fuck’s sake why does it NEED to get “that bad”?
#when a bone is cracked you don’t wait for it to break
#when blood pressure STARTS edging out of norm it gets treated

Wow, I feel terrible that a therapist actually said that to someone. The reason why disorders are only considered disorders if they pose a significant hindrance to your life is because a label like schizophrenia or major depressive disorder never goes away. You will always be considered someone who struggles with that disorder, even if you’ve progressed to a stage in which you are managing it without medication (it’s similar to how an addict who is clean still considers themselves an addict, for life. Because that struggle for them will never completely go away, even if they’re managing it) These labels can be difficult to deal with for some, though our society is getting better about how it treats mental health in general. (still much to improve, though)
That being said, someone who has tendencies leaning toward anorexia or any other disorder should not be turned away from treatment simply because they are not formally diagnosed with the label of said disorder, for reasons that were already pointed out. Unfortunately, not all psychologists are good at what they do, and not all psychologist practice using the same methodology. Psychologists can choose to practice using different approaches.
I implore you, if you are seeking medical help, look into the different approaches. Your psychologist should be able to tell you what type of approach they use in therapy. Don’t feel like you’re being rude to ask either, it’s their job to know this shit. And it’s your job to insure that you’re getting the best health care for you personally. Here is a great reference for the different approaches in psychology. If one psychologist doesn’t seem to be working for you, you have every right to seek a different one who maybe practices in a different approach. I know it seems like a lot of work, but it may also be empowering to know you’re taking your mental health into your own hands.
Lastly, there’s actually a new approach in psychology now a days that is greatly changing the way psychologists view “non-clinical” individuals. What I mean by that, is folks who are having issues in their life, they aren’t as happy as they’d like to be, but they aren’t in bad enough shape to be considered clinically disordered. This approach is called Positive Psychology, and it’s gaining in acclaim. It essentially addresses the issue you guys have brought up here, which is that people who aren't “the worst off” also have the right to desire being happier than they are. Positive Psychology looks to increase coping skills and over all life satisfaction of more “average” people.
Not trying to lessen your complaints here, they are very valid complaints about a field that is constantly changing (and needs to be to meet the needs of it’s population). I just like to tell anyone who is in need of clinical help this type of information, because people should be informed about their health options. As a psychology student, that is very important to me.

“The Great Race...

“The Great Race Debate”. Macklemore discussing Racism, White privilege, and Cultural appropriation in new Hot 97 interview. [x]
this is for all you self righteous jackasses on this site so quick to jump on the macklemore witch hunt wagon. His music might be weaker than most every black man’s in the game but you CANNOT put him in the same box as Igloo Australia. The man cares.
macklemore has always acknowledged his white privilege from the beginning of his career to now. he was out protesting for mike brown and eric garner just like the rest of us. in this same interview, he mackled about how he didn’t think same love should be praised as the equality anthem because there were black rappers who rapped about equality before he ever did and didn’t get the recognition he did. his mackling even went so far as to talk about about how he didn’t deserve his grammy because he thought kendrick had a better album. when has a white celebrity not only acknowledged their privilege but also apologize to the black celebrity they unintentionally benefit from?
i like macklemore a lot, and i really hate that this website convinced me he was a bad guy before i knew anything about him.
“They say “it’s so refreshing to hear somebody on records
No guns, no drugs, no sex, just truth”
The guns that’s America, the drugs are what they gave to us
And sex sells itself, don’t judge her ‘til it’s you
Ah, I’m not more or less cautious
The rappers rappin’ 'bout them strippers up on the pole, poppin
These interviews are obnoxious
Saying that it’s poetry, you’re so well spoken, stop it
I grew up during Reaganomics
When Ice T was out there on his killing cops shit
Or Rodney King was getting beat on
And they let off every single officer
And Los Angeles went and lost it
Now every month there is a new Rodney on Youtube
It’s just something our generation is used to
And neighbourhoods where you never see a news crew
Unless they’re gentrifying, white people don’t even cruise through
And my subconcious telling me stop it
This is an issue that you shouldn’t get involved in
Don’t even tweet, “R.I.P Trayvon Martin”
Don’t wanna be that white dude, million-man marchin’
Fighting for a freedom that my people stole
Don’t wanna make all my white fans uncomfortable
“But you don’t even have a fuckin’ song for radio
Why you out here talkin race, tryin’ to save the fuckin’ globe?”
Don’t get involved if the cause isn’t mine
White privilege, white guilt, at the same damn time
So we just party like it’s 1999
Celebrate the ignorance while these kids keep dying”
–A Wake by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
It’s always been in his music guys, you just gotta listen. I know most people have only heard like Thrift Shop, but it’s even in that song. He’s taking the shame away from having to buy reused clothes because you don’t have money. He’s like, hey look, thrift shop close can be cool too, you don’t need a lot of money to be stylish.
