Masterlist (of stories) from Santa’s Secret Pen ’21
You may remember that a while back I shared Amalie’s post about her new Secret Santa exchange for writers! Welp, here’s the masterlist of stories that have been sent in response to the donated prompts
If you want to read some of these but don't know where to start, let me recommend "Daughter of the Rising Tide" (I am o b s e s s e d), "The Wyrd and the Weaver," and "A Fallen Star Finds Love" (the response to my prompt!)

I first had this idea on a ferry back home from a ...

A 2021 Wrap-Up Post that is still a bit “Fuck You,” but not as much as 2020
Well…2021 kinda sucked too. Not as much as 2020, for me personally. Overall? About the same, worldwide, in a multitude of ways, again.
But I did get to see my family this year, which I Did Not in 2020.
So that part of 2021? Pretty stellar, actually. A calendar for 2020 would be covered in angry black scrawls the whole year. A calendar for 2021 would be covered in slightly less angry black scrawls the whole year except for two weeks in late May covered in, I don’t know, doodles of flowers a...

How I got my agent master’s degrees
I figured I’d write a “how I got my agent” post, only about my master’s degrees, because a) I don’t have an agent, so no “how I got my agent” post for me, and b) I guess the point of “how I got my agent” posts is to show that everyone’s journey is different. Everyone’s academic journey is different, too, but we don’t habitually write blog posts about that upon leaving school. So people are out here feeling bad because it took them more than four years to graduate college, or because they’re goin...

Santa’s Secret Pen 2021
Join me in Santa’s Secret Pen!
Lately I’ve witnessed a lot of my writer friends on twitter feeling trapped in an “end of year” blues, finding no joy in writing as they’re either stuck in the query trenches or on submission.
I’d love to change that—and I hope you’ll help me!
Let me present to you…
SANTA’S SECRET PEN 2021
A story prompt event!

The concept is shamelessly stolen from the fanfic community, but is applied to original fiction. Your...

Life since April and other things, which sounds like a YA title but isn’t
obligatory I liiiiiiiiiiiive!!! gifWhat up, peeps! It’s been a long year, and I haven’t been around since April, even though I started a post about line edits in a fit of good intentions some time in August.
SO. Let us have a general update of things I’ve been up to this year. And then, hopefully, since (godwilling) I’ll have graduated from my master’s programs by then, I should return to posting at least once a month starting in December or January.
Grad School
Always, always, ...

My Author Brand™ is getting weird
I’ve been noticing trends in my writing lately.
That’s pretty normal for authors. There are things we like to come back to again and again: certain themes, tropes, and plot points are bound to come up in different stories over and over. It’s great fodder for English-class essays.
Of course I have those sort of trends. Similar themes, similar characters are everywhere.
But I’ve been noticing, like, weird things.
Stupid things.
Things that I should have absolutely no reason to repea...
