Here's today's progress on my Hunley version 4.0 submarine book about Andan Cly and his crew having a damp misadventure in a Texian-occupied New Orleans, plus Bonus! guerrilla warfare, other assorted historic pirates, and an octoroon madam who moonlights as a Union spy.
Project: Ganymede
Deadline: November 1, 2010
New words written: 5236 (good – but some was written yesterday)
Present total word count: 113,113 words
Things accomplished in real life: Slept in a bit after staying up until nearly midnight to crest 110K words yesterday; daily run/climb; prepped self for tonight's event at B&N (Northgate location, Seattle, 6:00 p.m.).
Other: WE'RE GETTING THERE. Big giant humungo climactic scene: SQUARED AWAY. Now I need three smaller wind-down scenes, and folks, I think I'll have a Draft Zero. Will that happen over the weekend? I don't know. But I am going to try my damndest to make it, so that I'll have a WHOPPING WHOLE WEEK in order to clean this up for a Draft One that won't make my editor want to push me off a cliff.
Other, redux: Kat is picking me up at 4:30, so that (a). she can make another appointment after dropping me off at B&N, and (b). the husband and I can nab some supper beforehand. Ergo, I'm logging off now to go freshen up and get my act together before I jaunt off to the store and pretend to be a civilized grownup for an hour or so.

Today on the Dreadnought Channel
Oh my! I've been rather remiss in keeping up with the Dreadnought Channel – this much is apparent. My apologies, for people have been asking questions and hunting for updates, and I've been globe-trotting and typing like a mad fool thing, scarcely paying any attention. A thousand regrets are mine!
So here, let me rectify that a bit.
Dreadnought makes it to the Nook – Finally! I'm not sure if the holdup was on Macmillan's end or B&N's, and I'm certainly not making any accusations. All I know is that it's fixed now, and likewise the listing for the book itself (which was iffy) is live and ready for your loving clicks.
Dreadnought gets the B&N Book Club treatment – Discussion starts soon, so feel free to swing by and have your say/argue with Paul/ask questions/whatever you like. Generally speaking, toward the end of discussion time I stop by and answer queries; so if anything gets you thinking, and wondering, and moved to ask … by all means post it there.
Or you can drop by the Clockwork Century's Facebook page – I answer questions there, too. I didn't start the page, and I don't maintain it – I believe credit goes to someone at Tor – but I do keep one eyeball on it, and I'm happy to chat at readers over there, too.
Don't forget! Tomorrow, B&N at Northgate, Seattle – Starting at six o'clock I'll be there, happy to read, answer questions, field harassment, dodge rotten tomatoes, or sign (any commonly exposed) body parts. No purchase necessary to participate! You just have to sit there and listen to me ramble for a few minutes, that's all.

Things accomplished in real life: Day-job work; epic crap-ton of writer-business emails that ate up half the day; found out that our car will be in the shop through Monday, despite the fact that it was supposed to be finished today – thanks Midas! You assholes!; got read the riot act by Yellow Cab cabbie over a mistake at dispatch which wasn't my fault, but hey, way to be a dick about it – and also, way to lose a customer; fretted over how I'm going to get to my event tomorrow afternoon because I sure as shit won't be using Yellow Cab; got half of day saved by Kat Richardson; still not sure how I'll be getting home, but I'll think of something. [Edited to add: Got a lead on another taxi service that's come moderately well recommended (best you can hope for in Seattle), and have updated cell phone accordingly.]
Other: I wrote about 1000 of those words last night. Maybe I'll write more tonight, after I calm down. I'm still pretty pissed off. It's been one of those afternoons.

Tomorrow
You know, it's been about a year since I was last at the Northgate Barnes & Noble here in Seattle, so I daresay it's just about time for me to pop up there again. Conveniently enough, I'm scheduled to be there tomorrow, October 23, at 6:00 p.m. for all the usual shenanigans – reading, signing, Q&A, and other assorted bits of hilarity.
This is one of the last local events on my calendar.*
I've been doing all kinds of chicken-with-my-head-cut-off Dreadnought awareness-raising here, there, and everywhere, but it's winding down next month. Alas, this means your opportunities to catch me in the Seattle area are dwindling.
So if you can come out, I'd love to see you (as always). And (as always) I'm more than happy to sign any books, shoes, e-readers, articles of clothing, miscellaneous scrap books, sock puppets, cocktail napkins, iPod cases, or book totes you have on hand.**
General details available here, so happy clicking and I hope I'll see some of you at Northgate tomorrow!
* The only other one being a stop by Third Place Books (at Lake Forest Park) on November 2. After that, I have nothing else scheduled here in town. I'm sure that'll change sometime next year, but for now, this is IT.
** These are all things I have been asked to sign.

Deadline: November 1, 2010
New words written: 4851 (not bad – but it's a 2-day total)
Present total word count: 104,529 words
Things accomplished in real life: Day-job work; went to postal place; went to Walgreens to pick up prescription; made impulse purchase re: lovely wool coat in the window of a second-hand shop that has been calling my name for days; went to eye doctor's office and got my glasses adjusted (they needed it DESPERATELY); gave Macmillan yet another W9 (Christ, they must have a dozen of them by now); exchanged miscellaneous business emails and did the usual writer business work that took up way more time than it should have.
Other: That total isn't bad – but it'd be better if it wasn't a two-day total. Even so, I wrote about 4K of that today, and I will try to get more done this evening. We'll see how that works out.

Here is a thing that is awesome
So you know how sometimes you're just kicking around on the internet, and a running joke will start up between you and your friends … and then someone will take that joke and run with it, in a really awesome direction? Yeah. This is kind of like that.

Things accomplished in real life: Day-job work – including some extra work, in order to catch up from being a little slow while out of town; daily run/climb; spent some time on the phone for a pre-interview with a nice man from NPR re: an upcoming in-person interview; exchanged many business-y emails; negotiated another two interviews (1 with book club, 1 with website); turned down one anthology invite; got ready for tomorrow's event in Tacoma; did laundry.
Other: I will try to write more this evening, but I have to stop for supper and/or to pull laundry out of the dryers downstairs – and subsequently sort and fold it and put it away. So, yeah. Later. More words. NEED MOAR WORDS.

Reminder: Next Up
Hey everyone! Particularly you Tacoma-area everyones … don't forget: You can catch me tomorrow evening at the Garfield Book Company (on the PLU campus), starting at 7:00 p.m. Click here for further details should you require them, and by all means, come on out!
I'll read. I'll sign. I'll answer questions, and take requests. These things tend to play a little fast and loose, so I won't make you any promises … but there's a better than average chance that I'll be dorkily over-caffeinated.

Deadline: November 1, 2010
New words written: 2505 (wouldn't be so bad if it weren't a 4-day total)
Present total word count: 97,677 words
Things accomplished in real life: Day-job work; daily run/climb; went to postal shop yet again; went to Walgreens to refill a prescription; went to grocery store as we were out of EVERYTHING; cleaned the apartment top to bottom because it desperately needed it; finished unpacking; sorted all receipts from trip; filed for reimbursements where necessary, filed receipts against taxes where required; generally ran self ragged and didn't sit down to write until after suppertime, so oh well.
Other: I am utterly freaking beat from three pre-dawn airport trips and two out-of-state events in four days, but there's no time to pause and recover right now. Must push onward. I might not make this deadline, but it will not be for lack of trying.
