How To Powerfully Use Your Voice For Those Who Don’t Have One
Do your words have real actions backing them up?
Is today just another day off making a long weekend … or are you actually reflecting on the life and impact of Martin Luther King Jr.?
Think back to after George Floyd’s murder…what did you commit to doing? How well have you followed that commitment?
Use your voice for those who don’t have a voice.
That will make today meaningful.
It takes far more than changing your profile picture to a black square.
Words work but only if there are actions behind them to make your intentions happen.

Why Truth Telling Is Important and How You Can Make It Happen
Do you really know if everyone around you is being honest with you? No one wants to be lied to, yet untruths are everywhere. No one wants to admit they may occasionally lie, but they hypocritically expect everyone else to always tell the truth.
Growing up, I was told white lies are okay if they prevent someone’s feelings being hurt, but when do little white lies turn big and dangerous? Just like the American TV show Big Little Lies featuring Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, the little lies can rapidly spiral out of control with disastrous consequences.
“That’s not what I ordered; I wanted a latte,” Adam Konran, editor of Forbes magazine, told the barista at WeWork’s corporate headquarters in 2015.1 “Oh, we call lattes cappuccinos, and cappuccinos lattes, around here!” the barista enthusiastically replied, much to Konran’s surprise. Why the coffee confusion? It all began when WeWork CEO Adam Neumann insisted that his preferred coffee drink was called a latte, when he actually wanted a cappuccino. Did anyone tell him the truth, correct him, and explain his mistake? Absolutely not. Instead, the barista and all the employees at the headquarters renamed the coffee drinks to fit with what Neumann incorrectly believed they were called based on his preference of frothy foam versus steamed milk.
Do you think your team would tell you if you got the coffee description wrong?
This almost unbelievable tale is the modern-day version of the emperor who has no clothes. Not one single person at WeWork felt they could tell Neumann the truth about coffee. Instead, it became a widespread part of the WeWork culture of drink ordering. Every time any intern, new employee, senior executive, or visitor ordered a coffee, they played along, changing the name, explaining to those not in the know the façade that had been built because of their CEO. Which begs the question, if they were dishonest about coffee, what else were they covering up or lying about?
The most successful executives are comfortable being told they are wrong, openly invite debate, and actively encourage those around them to tell them that they are wrong.
Can you remember the last time someone spotted your mistake? How did you react? That is what teaches those around you how ready you are to hear the truth.
If you want to distinguish between the truth and a well-intended lie read the first chapter of Words That Work here. It provides inside access to CEOs who have been lied to and how they were able to create a company where contagious truth telling led to profit and revenue beyond everyone’s expectations.
It reviews some of the biggest little lies in recent corporate history and why they matter, let’s you start your Words That Work journey at the most crucial point, making sure you are being told the truth, can share the truth, and know how to spot a lie.

How To Improve The Way You Communicate To Get Results
Take a moment before your next important conversation. Pay attention to how much time you spend preparing your report, spreadsheet, or presentation slides compared to the actual words you will use.
Think about the first words you will say at the start of the conversation…and the final words you will end with to increase the probability you will get what you want.
Plan it
Write it down
Practice it
Reflect on what works and repeat or adjust.
I wrote my third book because executives I work with kept sharing the results they achieved when they used the words I suggested they use in board rooms, on stage, and in conversations with their teams, bosses and investors. You can hear their feedback below.
Ask yourself:
Do you wish you had more truth tellers at your company?
Do you wonder how to effectively share feedback to increase performance?
Do you wish you could confidently step on stage and engage your audience?
Do you want to learn how to prepare and deliver great media interviews?
Do you wonder how you can be true to your own purpose and values in how you lead?
Those are some of the many questions that get answered in Words That Work: Communicate Your Purpose, Your Performance, and Your Profit.
But don’t listen to me, listen to what these executives have to say:
“As the CEO of my own STREAM foundation and creator of STEM-based cooking classes & workshops, the advice in this book is super valuable. It is full of new ways of how to put your customers at the heart of your company, manage your external media relationships, and lead with purpose, heart, and passion. As a 16 year old business owner, this book gives me the playbook for continuing to grow my business to new heights! Your work, advice, and tools are priceless information for any business entrepreneur. “
Simone Bridges, CEO Goddess Food Factory, Founder Simone Bridges Inspires Inc
“Val has made the ultimate guide to business communication. “Words that Work” is full of suggestions and alternative statements that open up communication. I am excited to have this new tool that will help me improve my ability to ask questions and affirm what others are saying.”
Rachel Canales, Chief of Staff, Lenovo Global Accounts/Chief Customer Advocate
“Val Wright has been an immensely valuable strategic advisor to me surrounding innovation and leadership through acquisitions and an IPO. I have considered her previous books required reading for any executive responsible for leading people through growth and change, and her clear, insightful voice will put her new book on the top of my recommended reading list. In her characteristic style, Val provides candid advice every leader needs to navigate innovation, communicate with impact, harness emotions, and actively manage external and internal communications. The easy-to-read format addresses the many situations executives will go through when they are asked to create outcomes that stretch beyond the current trajectory of the business.”
John Schneider, Chief Marketing Officer, Betterworks
“Val’s third book sets us on a path to the essential art of truth-telling in business. I’ve used Val’s Words in many situations and it’s true, they do just work! The practical examples in this book will allow every leader to speak more boldly which will grow their business and career.”
Susan Potter, Vice President of Digital Experience, Hootsuite
“This book is a culmination of Val’s wise counsel she has given me over the last few years. Just the right words at the exact right moment. Every leader needs to read this book and benefit from this confidence building positivity. The world needs to hear from more incredible badass uplifting women like Val.”

What Are Your Favorite Photos of 2021? Here Are My Most Treasured
What are your favorite work memories from 2021?
I love creating photo books but I don’t always remember to create a physical album. So for now, here are nine of my favorite photos from 2021 that captures the year that was.
From Virtual Working to Real Life conversations
In November I got to meet some of the group of executives i have been working with remotely for the last year as part of a Senior Leadership Forum for executives in technology. It was a delight to meet in real life in Palm Springs and they each received a preview manuscript of my third book Words that Work.
2. Taking Your Daughters to work special!
I love taking my daughters to work and where better than a livestreaming launch of Limelight eveningwear collection streamed on TikTok! Two of my three daughters are here with francesca's CEO Andrew Clarke.
3. francesca's private equity ownership transformation
When my client womenswear retailer francesca’s successfully moved from public company to private equity ownership, I wanted to give a gift that symbolized the year they had been through refinancing and restructuring their company. I knew I wanted to incorporate a phoenix, but it needed to be an everlasting gift. My hyper-focused brain pays off in these situations because I went down a very long, deep, endless Google search tunnel, and eventually discovered glass paperweights with an ornate phoenix inside, from the Caithness Glass factory in Scotland.
4. New York speaking in front of 850 technology leaders
There is nothing like getting back to speaking infront of large audiences again! If you see the red dot on the stage, that's me talking about how to put customers at the heart of every decision in your company.
5. My true excitement: jumping on a chair at SoCal Innovation Forum
Yes this is me, jumping on a chair as part of the SoCal Innovation Forum that I led for The Alliance of SoCal Innovation. The energy, ideas, and action resulting from a day together was electrifying!
6. Handwriting my third book
I was so fed up of my keyboard and computer in 2021, so much so I decided to hand write my third book. This is the book in progress at The Avalon hotel in Palm Springs where my husband wisely suggested I went for a week to help me focus and leave all the craziness at home as we emerged from lockdown.
7. Guest Judge on Shark Tank style competition
I've designed and led a number of Shark Tank style innovation competitions. This most recent experience might be my favorite yet. I was a judge for Fran Finds with fashion brand francesca’s. From hundreds of applications, over two days last week the finalists appeared at Francesca’s headquarters to pitch their products, purpose, and passion. The catch was, their products needed to be available for this holiday season to appear in boutiques and online. Here is one of the winners.
8. My favorite studio for virtual keynotes & interactive events
I am seeing caution return to events and internal corporate meetings so I will be seeing more of this studio in 2022 than I expected. CTRL Collective in Los Angeles have an incredible set up and studio for all my recordings and live events. My favorite coffee shop Copa Vida is right next door too!
9. Yes I have written three books
I am really including this one to remind myself because I still forget when people ask. I am now an author of three books. It is incredible to see events chose to give away all three of my books to their attendees. When I used to play football (soccer) in England I never did manage a hat trick, but at least I can say I achieved one in book publishing!
I’d love to see your own photo recap of 2021.
Here’s to a fantastic 2022!
And finally… A Reminder:
“What’s your greatest dream for yourself?”

Do You Want Help Uncovering Your Greatest Personal Moonshot?
If you didn’t doubt anything, what do you dream to do?
Perhaps you’ve never told anyone. Perhaps no one has ever asked you before. Perhaps you haven’t entertained the idea or you have an idea in mind.
I’ve had great news from several executives in the last couple of weeks realizing some of their own moonshot ideas including….
Two promotions for first time CMOs
Three other first time reporting to CEO promotions
Three significant business awards recognizing expertise in their field
Relocating to a dream destination
Interviews and features in prominent business media
Last week I was in New York speaking to 850 (fully vaccinated) leaders in technology. I was sharing how to unlock your next company moonshot which is featured in my upcoming book Words That Work. But put the current company, current job, and company moonshots to one side for a moment and imagine bold possibilities by asking:
“What’s your greatest dream for yourself?”

5 Unique Lessons From Ally Love Whether You Adore Or Hate Peloton
I want to share with you the wise words I heard from Ally Love as she spoke at the Women of The Channel event in New York last week.
I was speaking there on How To Unlock Your Next Company Moonshot and hosted a panel discussion on Putting Your Customers at The Heart of Your Company.
Whether you love or hate Peloton and its bikes & treadmills, you will find Ally Love’s advice thought provokingly different…
Wise Words from Ally Love: Tell yourself that you have just the right amount of work to do today. Ally never tells herself she has too much to do and I love this resetting of how you think about you what you need to achieve at the start of each day.
Let go of perfectionism. For yourself and what you expect of others. While it might be commonly talked about your own perfectionism tendencies, consider where you might be holding others to standards that are unrealistic.
Demand in negotiation what is unlikely to happen otherwise. Ally explained how she negotiated in her host contract with The Mets that if she is unable to host a game then a minority presenter must take her place. Having this in her contract guaranteed it had to happen vs. hoping or good intentions.
Check yourself each morning. Ally asked all 800 attendees to consider how they were feeling on a scale of 1-10. She starts every day just the same way noting how she feels and decides just how she wants to feel by the end of the day. Not every day needs to be a perfect 10 and not being ok, or ending the day not ok is perfectly acceptable.
Just pick one superpower and unleash it. I love the just one idea. Not two. Not a list. Just one thing that you uniquely do like no one else. If you don’t know what it is, ask others to help you see your own superpower. Then figure out how you can do that each day.
Yes. I’m a peloton fan and love taking Ally’s rides. I even got to meet her when I was last in New York 2 years ago and rode a live ride with her. But her wisdom goes beyond inspiring thousands of people on bikes…if you get to hear her live, you will see just why.
FINALLY… A reminder that my latest book launches in January.
Words That Work: Communicate Your Purpose, Your Profits and Your Performance. Kogan Page
Never have our words mattered more than in the last 18months. How we lead, how we have shown those around us that we care, how we make sure that our intentions, purpose, and passion are all aligned.

Would You Like Me To Visit Your Company First To Share My New Book Launch?
I’ve just arrived in New York to speak to 850 technology leaders this week. Are you finding packing for business trips is harder? It took me twenty times longer to pack my suitcase and I forgot what landing but sitting on the tarmac for 45minutes with no gate felt like, but I am like a caged animal who just broke free. It feels so good to be back traveling again!
So I am ready if you are!! … for some more real life experiences. Strategy retreats, innovation labs, keynote talks, workshops, advisory work for executives, boards, and teams. Let me know if you want to talk.
My January is nearly fully booked and the next few months after that are getting close so don’t be like my flight that was stuck behind all the other ones that got their first and jump to the front of the queue!
What’s it all about?
Words That Work: Communicate Your Purpose, Your Profits and Your Performance
Never have our words mattered more than in the last 18months. How we lead, how we have shown those around us that we care, how we make sure that our intentions, purpose, and passion are all aligned.
As a CEO or senior executive, the stakes are extraordinary in every conversation. Millions or even billions of dollars are in jeopardy during board meetings, investor calls, media interviews, customer interactions, and employee conversations. The most successful executives know this and invest their time preparing in a thoughtful and intentional way while continuously improving their knowledge and skills in how to communicate to drive profitable growth.
Throughout this book we will pause and deconstruct words that work and words that do not work. I will give you a rapid list of alternative words to say in a multitude of situations. If you have an inattentive brain like mine, you can skip to the appendix where you can find the shortcut to the complete list of actual phrases and words that simply work.
If you are buying in bulk for your team or company let me know so I can extend special offers to you. Or pre order your copy at your favorite local bookstore to support your local small business. Or you can preorder it online at Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, Barnes & Noble, Target, Booktopia.au, Waterstones, Amazon.ca
