Family Ties, Corporate Lies: A Thrilling Tale of Feuds and Deception with Author D.R. ShoresPictureMy guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is DR Shores, author of the book Shallow Stock. Raised on the Yorkshire coastline in the United Kingdom, D R Shores studied engineering prior to a twenty-five year career in business. Literature has always been a passion, with a taste ranging from Sigrid Nunez and Thomas Harris to established twentieth-century classics from Ernest Hemingway, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ayn Rand and Milan Kundera. Now living with his family and introverted dog in the east midlands area of England, his other interests include music, current affairs, volunteering and keeping fit.Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionThis month, I had the incredible opportunity to chat with DR Shore about his electrifying novel Shallow Stock - a corporate thriller that's so much more than just another business drama. Imagine "Succession" meets deep psychological exploration, and you're halfway there!

What Makes This Book Special

DR's novel brilliantly weaves together multiple complex plot lines - from corporate rivalries and black-tie affairs to unexpected touches of human trafficking and love interests. But what truly sets this book apart is how he transforms what could be a straightforward business narrative into a profound exploration of human motivations.

The two main characters, Wynter McGlynn and Julian Dayton, are masterfully crafted. They're not your typical corporate stereotypes, but nuanced individuals wrestling with ambition, family legacy, and personal morality. DR doesn't just tell you their story - he invites you to understand them.

A Peek Behind the Writing Curtain

What fascinated me most during our conversation was DR's writing process. He's a dedicated "pantser" - meaning he doesn't meticulously plot out every detail beforehand, but lets the story and characters evolve organically. As someone who writes similarly, I found his approach refreshing and relatable!

The book emerged during the pandemic, a time when many of us were exploring creative outlets. DR didn't set out to write a specific genre thriller, but instead followed his characters' journeys, allowing themes of competition, collaboration, and morality to naturally emerge.

Book Review: The Untold Story of Books

Picture The Untold Story of Books by Michael Castleman is a look at publisher from the days before the Gutenberg press to present. And if you are afraid that this is going to be dry material, then you are mistaken! He does an amazing job of keeping readers glued to the pages.

He also debunks the myth that the "good ol' days" of publishing were good. In fact, he shows that publishing has always been difficult, has always dealt with piracy, and has always made it difficult for authors to make money writing.

I was most interested in publishing as it is today simply because I'm an author today. I love how he showed that having a book published is no longer the difficulty. Instead, because the gatekeepers to publishing have been removed, the struggle is now getting heard over all the noise. Anyone interested in books, publishing, writing, or history is sure to love this book.

Shadows of Injustice: A Reporter’s Tale from America's Prisons with Author Carla ContiPictureToday on the Online for Authors podcast, guest-host Carole O’Neill is chatting with Carla Conti, author of the book Chained Birds. Carla is a former journalist and author of the award-winning true crime memoir CHAINED BIRDS, a prison abuse exposé about justice and survival in federal prison. It took her ten years to write as she balanced the safety of the story participants (including herself) in this tell-all thriller of prison gang hit orders and corrupt officials.Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionGuest-host Carole O'Neill is still reeling from her incredible conversation with Carla Jean Conti about her jaw-dropping true crime book, Chained Birds.

Most books start with a plot twist - but this one started with an actual snowball. Literally. In 2011, an inmate at Lewisburg federal prison threw a snowball at a correctional officer, which triggered a chain of events that would consume a decade of Carla's life.

What fascinated Carole most about Chained Birds wasn't just the legal drama, but the human story underneath. Carla spent ten years advocating for Kevin Sanders, documenting his journey through a complex and often brutal prison system. Her commitment went far beyond journalism - she became part of his defense team, maintaining friendship and hope even when prison gangs issued hit orders against her subject.

Key Takeaways from Chained Birds:

Sometimes justice looks nothing like we expectTrue advocacy means staying committed, even when it's scaryEvery story has multiple perspectives
Carla's already working on her next true crime story - a 1970s love triangle murder case. Stay tuned!

Whispers from the Past: Uncovering the Murder of a Nonprofit Volunteer with Author Karen E OsbornePictureMy guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Karen E Osborne, author of the book Justice for Emerson. Karen is an award-winning and Amazon Kindle best-selling author of five suspense novels–Reckonings (award-winning family saga/suspense), Tangled Lies (award-winning murder mystery), Getting It Right (recognized by Essence Magazine as a Best Read), True Grace, (award-winning historical fiction inspired by her grandmother, set in 1924 Harlem, NY), and Justice for Emerson, a dual timeline murder mystery.Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionThis week, I had the absolute pleasure of diving deep into the world of mystery writing with author Karen E. Osborne, whose latest novel, Justice for Emerson, completely captivated me. If you love character-driven mysteries with heart, compassion, and unexpected twists, this book needs to be on your reading list.

What fascinated me most about our conversation was Karen's refreshingly honest approach to writing. As a fellow "pantser" (someone who writes by the seat of their pants), I was thrilled to hear her admit that even with a murder mystery, she doesn't always know who the killer is until they "reveal themselves" in the writing process!

3 Writing Insights That Stuck With Me

Research can be a writer's best friend (and most delightful rabbit hole)
Characters often know themselves better than we do
Every book is an opportunity to explore themes that matter
Karen's approach to weaving social issues like homelessness, addiction, and racial dynamics into her narrative was particularly compelling. Her characters feel real, complex, and wonderfully human.

Book Review: The Girl of Many Crowns

Picture
The Girl of Many Crowns by DH Morris is an amazing historical fiction based on the the French princess Judith and Baldwin Iron Arm. This novel is set in the 800s in France, which is not typically a time period I enjoy. However, I loved this book because Morris brought these characters to life and didn't get me mired in the nitty gritty of ancient French political history. Don't get me wrong, I learned a lot about the political intrigues of the time, but always as a way of seeing Judith and her plight.

During women's history month, I was happy to read this book and see that even seventeen hundred years ago, women understood that they were being used as pawns and found a way to rebel against their oppressors. Judith, though young, was strong, courageous, independent, and brave. I believe this story should become an animated film that we can show to our daughters and granddaughters to show them what strength in the face of adversity looks like.

I raged, cheered, laughed, and cried - it's a must-read.

The Power of Forgiveness

Tandem Tales: Exploring the USA One Pedal Stroke at a TimePictureToday on the Online for Authors podcast, special guest host Carol Pearson is flipping the script and interviewing me, Teri M Brown, author of the book 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure. Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionCarol Pearson is the founder of indie publishing house 10 Little Rules, creating books filled with personal narrative and guided journaling inspiration. The books are written by a growing community of authentic and inspiring authors who share their stories to empower others and share their wisdom. At 10LRs we believe in the unbreakable connection between all of us, and relish those "me too" moments that lead to insights and powerful change.

As an author of character-driven fiction, my goal is to introduce readers to characters they'd love to invite to lunch. I do this through my writing (Sunflowers Beneath the Snow, An Enemy Like Me, Daughters of Green Mountain Gap, and 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure), through my book reviews on my blog (www.terimbrown.com/blog), and through my podcasting as host of this show.

In addition to telling a great story, I want those who read or hear my words to contemplate difficult aspects of life such as racism, xenophobia, fear of change, family dynamics, loss, and war. My TEDx talk relates my experiences with racism (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxYid...), while my books always tackle hard topics.

In their book review, the Book Commentary stated that 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure by Teri M Brown is a wonderful exploration of personal growth, transformation, and the quest for adventure. The book is an inspiring guide wrapped around the author’s journey of cycling across the United States on a tandem bike with her husband, Bruce. Through this adventure, Brown discovers new geographical locations and insights about herself, her relationships, and life at large. She shares those insights in this life-transforming book! The book's central message is about embracing life’s challenges and uncertainties to foster personal growth and healing. Brown emphasizes that everyone can achieve extraordinary feats, regardless of age or circumstances, if they break it into manageable segments and stay focused. Her tale is not just about the physical act of cycling but signifies a mental and emotional metamorphosis that empowers her to redefine her potential.

Into the Cold: A Tale of Survival Amidst Winter's Wrath with Author Chris Underwood
PictureMy guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Chris Underwood, author of the book The Cold Winter. Chris started seriously writing back in 2012 when his concerns of a power grid failure began to creep into his mind. His concerns festered into a storyline that continued to bug him until he got it on paper. He’s heard that good writing is like sharing a good secret. It took five years of honing his craft to get the first book out, but it was fun sharing this secret.Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionI'm diving into a pulse-pounding conversation with author Chris Underwood about his gripping disaster fiction series that'll make you want to stock up on emergency supplies.

Imagine this: The power grid collapses three days before Christmas, a massive snowstorm is rolling in, and survival becomes your only priority. That's the heart-stopping premise of The Cold Winter, a series born from Chris's fascination with real-life power grid failures and a deep dive into preparedness culture.

What I Learned This Week

Chris isn't just an author - he's a true "method writer" who believes in experiencing everything he writes about. Want to write about a Huey helicopter? He'll literally go ride in one. Need details about a naval ship? He'll volunteer and live on board for a week. Talk about commitment to authenticity!

Behind the Book

Inspired by the massive 2003 power outage, Chris explores a terrifying scenario: What happens when technology fails and communities must rely on their preparedness and each other? His series follows characters navigating a world where survival skills mean everything.

Quick Peek at the Series

Book 1: The Cold Winter - Power grid collapse
Book 2: Called to Arms
Book 3: First major battle sequence
Book 4 (In Progress): Battle of Niagara Falls
Pro-tip from Chris: Always leave some story fuel in your tank when you stop writing. Hemingway's advice is to end your writing session knowing exactly where you'll pick up next!

Write It Now: Essential Habits to Bring Your Story to Life with Author Dr. Nicole JanzPictureMy guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Nicole Janz, author of the book The Write Habit. Dr. Nicole Janz is a former journalist, academic, and recognized expert in writing habits and creative mindset coaching. She has helped hundreds of writers overcome procrastination, connect with their creative purpose, and bring their books and articles to life through her 1-1 mentoring and coaching programs.Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionI just got off an incredible podcast interview with Dr. Nicole Janz, author of The Write Habit, and I can't wait to share some game-changing insights about creativity, writing rituals, and how to actually make progress on your writing goals!

Here are my top takeaways that completely transformed how I think about my writing practice:

The Power of Intentional Writing

Goals aren't restrictive - they're an act of self-care
Create a personal "flow ritual" to signal your brain it's writing time
Break big projects into tiny, manageable steps
Give yourself permission to remove things from your plate
My Favorite Writing Ritual Hack

Dr. Janz shared an amazing technique called a "flow ritual" - a specific sequence of actions you do EVERY time before writing that trains your brain to switch into creative mode. For her, it's making a specific tea, setting a small goal on a post-it, and playing the same focus playlist. I'm still working on mine - I'd love to hear about yours!

Writer's Block? Not a Problem

The biggest revelation? Writer's block isn't your enemy - it's a message. Sometimes it means you need rest, need to process emotions, or aren't emotionally connected to your work.
