A dedicated outdoorsman, Mat squeezes writing impulses between his amateur sporting endeavours, beach and bushwalking time and his family commitments. A day job in finance complements his fascination with financial markets, but inventing character voices and storylines takes him out of his logical daytime mind.

Inspired by novels that have great characters, Mat loves drawn out historical family sagas of the sort Tim Winton, Ken Follett, Bryce Courtenay and Jeffrey Archer write. Sebastien Faulks (Birdsong) is another favourite.

Mat lives in Brisbane, Queensland.

Valley of the Giants is his second novel. His first novel The Necessary Techniques of Obsession was published in 2015.
