Behind the Scenes Sunday
Let’s take a peek at the cogs inside the machine and talk about why I write and how I write on Behind the Scenes Sunday! Today I wanted to share some of my thoughts around story tropes and why I’m such a big fan of them
So, what is a trope? Tropes are certain conventions of fictional genres in narratives. Everything from love triangles, to reluctant heroes, to unmotivated POV – they are all tropes of the respective genre narratives they inhabit.
Your gut reaction as both a reader or writer might be to nod, and say you understand… that what I mean is a cliche.
That’s NOT what I mean.
A cliche is a trope done badly. A trope is neither good nor bad. How it is executed is everything. And in fact, if you go out of your way to avoid using all tropes in your fiction (which is impossible, in my opinion) you’re going to have a lot of unsatisfied readers. These tropes exist and persist because people enjoy them. They seek them out and find pleasure in exploring the different iterations of them.
I love tropes. I love including them in my work. I love turning them inside out and dissecting what makes them tick. I love meeting and subverting reader expectations with tropes. Tropes are some of the most powerful tools we as writers have and you should study them extensively if you want to be a success!
As always, if you’re interested in supporting me and my work, thank you: my classic murder mysteries with scifi twists, The Cadence Turing Mystery series, are available on all major platforms, and the first two books in my urban fantasy series The Night are out soon!

The Check-In
Welcome to THE CHECK-IN, where you can get a sneak peek into my writing progress every week! Read on to find out what I’m working on and how things are progressing in my world.
Here’s the breakdown:
Lonely is the Night – SO. FREAKIN. CLOSE. But I had some family obligations over the last week and this is the draft that would not finish. I figure I have maybe 4k or so left. I need a good writing day or two and this sucker is done. I vow it! On the life of my characters, I vow it!I’m really looking forward to putting Lonely is the Night away for a while. Not just because I’ll have the satisfaction of finishing another first draft (which should not be discounted – it’ll feel fantastic) but because I really, really want to get back to Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch… I was talking about the new project with a few folks over the weekend and it just got me excited about it all over again. But I’ve got to get book three done, it’s already been delay after delay. But I know I will triumph!
LESSON OF THE WEEK: IT AIN’T OVER TIL IT’S OVER.

Behind the Scenes Sunday
Let’s take a peek at the cogs inside the machine and talk about why I write and how I write on Behind the Scenes Sunday! Today I’d like to talk about the importance of going device free when engaging in creative writing work: why I started this practice, the struggles I’ve had keeping up this regimen, and the benefits I feel it has given me.
As much as I love writing, I am also the master of avoiding writing. There are no lengths I will not go to sometimes in order to not write. I will do things I usually hate: I will clean showers, I will do yardwork, I will cook – there are no ends to the things I will do to occupy my time when it comes time to write. Again, I stress, this is not because I dislike writing. I love to write! But I do dislike doing hard things, and so often the start of writing especially is (there’s just no way around it) hard.
In the past, one thing that I would use to keep myself from writing was looking at my phone. I’d put my phone down next to my computer and within three minutes it’d be back in my hand. I’d check for text messages, phone calls, scroll through TikTok and Facebook, lose countless productive minutes and hours to cellular nonsense. And if someone actually called me on the phone? Oh boy, did I always pick up!
Noticing this pattern of behavior, I resolved to make my writing time a device free time. Now, when I write, my phone goes on silent and it goes across the room, well out of my casual reach. It’s been a hard adjustment, and sometimes I forget to do it. But I do feel it has helped my focus and productivity immensely. Yes, writing is still hard. Yes, there are other distractions to occupy me. But now those distractions are less attractive and easy to get to! If you’re considering going device free, do it! You have nothing to lose but lost time!
As always, if you’re interested in supporting me and my work, thank you: Hungry is the Night, my urban fantasy, is available on all major platforms, as are my classic murder mysteries with scifi twists, The Cadence Turing Mystery series!
